2. Savor the rich cultural heritage at the Bomas of Kenya

Immerse yourself in  culture at the iconic Bomas of Kenya; a cultural village located about 10 kilometers south of downtown Nairobi. Kenya is culturally endowed, boasting beautiful traditions from its 44 tribes! 

It is home to 12 traditional bomas, or homesteads, each representing a different tribe. Each  is furnished with traditional artifacts and staffed by members of the tribe who demonstrate traditional skills and crafts.

The Bomas of Kenya also has a cultural center, an auditorium, and a restaurant. The cultural center hosts traditional dance performances, music concerts, and other cultural events.

The auditorium can seat up to 3,500 people and is used for conferences, banquets, and other events. The restaurant serves traditional Kenyan cuisine, and you can’t pass on some delicious Kenyan meal!

3. Some railway & train history; Nairobi Railway Museum

Don’t miss out on this one if you’re a train enthusiast or history buff. Located in Nairobi Central Railway Station,  the Nairobi Railway Museum is conveniently within reach. 

It has a collection of over 100 exhibits, including steam locomotives, coaches, wagons, and railway memorabilia. There are also exhibits on the history of the Kenya-Uganda Railway, the construction of the railway, and the role of railways in Kenya’s development.

5. Visit  the August 7th Memorial Park

August 7th, 1998 remains permanently etched in Kenya’s history. The fateful day saw the infamous US Embassy bombings claim innocent lives, and leave hundreds maimed;  one of the darkest days in the country’s past.

The August 7th Memorial Park is a public park that was created in 2001 to commemorate the victims. The park is located at the site of the former United States embassy in Nairobi. It is a tranquil space with a landscaped garden, a wall of remembrance, and a sculpture made from the debris of the bombing.

The wall of remembrance lists the names of the 218 people who died in the bombing. The sculpture is a spiral staircase that symbolizes the journey from darkness to light.  It is a popular spot for reflection and remembrance. Although it is a reminder of the tragedy of the 1998 embassy bombings, it is also a symbol of hope and resilience.

6. Karen Blixen Museum

The Karen Blixen Museum is a great place to learn about the life and work of the Danish author Karen Blixen, who lived in Kenya from 1914 to 1931. The museum is located at the foot of the Ngong Hills, about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from downtown Nairobi.

It  is housed in the former home of Karen Blixen and her husband, Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke. The house is a two-story bungalow built in the early 1900s. It has been restored to its original condition and furnished with many of the original artifacts. These include furniture, books and photographs. The museum also has a library, a research center, and a coffee shop.

The setting is one of the highlights here, especially the Ngong Hills’ iconic backdrop. You can enjoy the gardens as you sip coffee at the coffee shop, taking in the views.  8. Pat a giraffe at the Giraffe Center

Situated in Lang’ata, just about 20 kilometers from the city center, this a non-profit organization set up to conserve the endangered Rothschild giraffe. This species boasts distinct orange-brown patches separated by white lines; truly beautiful. It was founded in 1979 by Jock Leslie and Betty Leslie.

It is now home to the tallest species of giraffe in the world. A visit to the Giraffe Center offers you spectacular interactions with the animals, and educational programs.  Some of the things you can do at the center include;

9. Visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Marvel at the impressive sights of the world’s largest animal; the elephant at the orphanage. Founded in 1977 by Daphne Sheldrick, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust commits to the rescue and rehabilitate orphaned elephants and rhinos.

It operates the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi National Park, and has rescued over 3,000 elephants and rhinos. The orphanage is where an elephant orphan’s journey begins- a journey that finally culminates in their reintegration back into the wild.

Visiting the orphanage allows you to experience intimate interactions with the orphaned elephants, and perhaps learn how you can partner with the Trust’s efforts in conservation. 10. Dare to tread the Nairobi Snake Park

This unassuming hidden gem in the heart of the city is home to one of the most mysterious creatures on earth-the snakes. If these slithering beings give you the shivers or nightmares, you might consider missing out on this one. However, why not take a chance and dispel your fears by taking a guided tour in this regulated environment?  

Located in the grounds of the Nairobi National Museum, it is home to a variety of snakes, including cobras, mambas, and pythons. You might also encounter lizards, tortoises and crocodiles.  You can take a guided tour, watch snake shows and even hold some of the non-venomous snakes! Learn from the knowledgeable staff about these creatures, then crown your visit by buying a souvenir from the gift shop.

11.  Step into the city’s wild side; The Nairobi Safari Walk

The Nairobi Safari Walk offers its visitors a chance to embark on a journey through the country’s diverse ecosystems, encounter wildlife and unwind over the calming effect of nature. 12.  Fly to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa, and for good reason. It is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, and zebras.

The Mara is also famous for the annual Great Migration, when over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras cross the Mara River in search of fresh grazing. There are two ways to get to the Maasai Mara from Nairobi: by road or by air.

Flying is the quickest and most convenient option, taking just 45 minutes from Nairobi Wilson Airport. Once you arrive at the Maasai Mara, you will be transferred to your lodge or camp. (Book your preferred one in advance).

The lodge or camp will arrange for your safari activities, such as game drives, bush walks, and hot air balloon rides. The best time to visit is during the dry season (June-October), when the animals are more active and the skies are clear. 13. Visit the Nairobi animal Orphanage

Located in the Nairobi National Park, the orphanage is a non-profit organization that cares for orphaned and injured animals. The orphanage was founded in 1964 and currently cares for over 1,000 animals, including lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, and birds. The animals are rescued from a variety of situations, such as being orphaned by poachers, injured in road accidents, or abandoned by their mothers.

14. Spend an adrenaline-packed day at Kereita Forest

Clear your schedule for the day and head over to the ultimate adrenaline-packed treats just outside the city. Kereita Forest is a beautiful forest located about 30 kilometers (18 miles) from Nairobi, near Kimende town.  It is a popular spot for hiking, camping, and ziplining. The Forest Adventure Center, located here offers a plethora of activities for visitors at a fee.

The forest is home to a variety of plants and animals, including elephants, lions, and monkeys. There are also several waterfalls and streams in the forest. Enjoy nature and get some exercise too while at it in this serene and diverse forest. Refreshing! Activities have an additional charge, applying equally for both residents and non-residents.

You can get to Kereita Forest by matatu (public bus) or by car. If you are taking a matatu, take one that is going to Kimende. From Kimende, you can take a boda boda (motorcycle taxi) to the forest. If you are driving, take the Nairobi-Nakuru highway and turn off at Kimende. The forest is about 5 kilometers from the highway.

Remember to check the weather conditions before heading out, bring some water and snacks, and wear comfortable clothes.

15. Take a day tour to Lake Naivasha

If you’ve never been to the Great Rift Valley, plan a day or two out of the city and take a tour to Lake Naivasha. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake located in the Great Rift Valley, about 90 kilometers (56 miles) northwest of Nairobi.

It is a popular spot for bird watching, boating, and fishing. The lake is also home to a variety of wildlife, including hippos, crocodiles, and waterbuck. If you are not driving yourself, you can book a day tour through a credible travel agency that fits your budget and interests.

16. Take a tea tour at the Kiambethu Farm

Kenya is a top exporter of tea, and the locals love their tea, no doubt. Explore the farms where it all happens, and savor a fresh, hot cup of the drink at Kiambethu Farm. It is one of the oldest tea farms in Kenya and has been in operation since 1930.

It is also one of the popular working tea farms to visit on a private day tour. Located in nearby Limuru, it is only a short drive from the city center. The farm is open to the public and offers a variety of tours and activities, including guided tours of the tea plantation, tea tasting, and cooking demonstrations.

The best time to visit is during the morning or afternoon, when the weather is cooler. (Limuru is generally cold, though). Remember to wear comfortable shoes and warm clothing for when it gets cold at the farm. There is a parking lot on site for visitors.

17. Go white water rafting on Tana River

Water rafting is one of the best ways to experience the tranquil, natural beauty on offer here. The Tana River is a popular destination for white water rafting in Kenya. It is located about 95 kilometers from Nairobi and offers a variety of rapids for all levels of experience. The rafting season on the Tana River runs from July to September, during the dry season. The river is at its lowest level during this time, which makes it easier to navigate the rapids.

 The Tana River is a Class III and IV river, which means that it has some challenging rapids. However, there are also some easier rapids for beginners. A typical white water rafting trip on the Tana River takes about 4 hours. It starts with a safety briefing and then a short hike to the put-in point.

The rafting itself lasts about 3 hours and takes you through a variety of rapids. It’s an adrenaline pumping and fun activity, especially with friends. You know what they say; the many, the merrier! 18. Visit the Maasai Ostrich Farm outside town

Clear a few hours from your day and visit Kenya’s  largest ostrich farm.  Located near Kitengela, about 30 kilometers from Nairobi, it is a short drive. It was established in 1991, and has grown to become East Africa’s largest commercial hub for ostrich farming. Find over 1000 birds of two breeds here; the blue-neck or somali ostrich, and the Maasai ostrich with a pink neck.

Explore the serene grounds on a guided tour of the farm and learn about the ostriches. You can get a chance to feed them, or even a ride on these gigantic birds’ backs! 19. Go hiking on Mt. Longonot

You will need to leave early in the morning for this one to avoid the heat. Mt. Longonot is a great hiking alternative if you’re looking for the thrill but Mt. Kenya or Kilimanjaro seem intimidating. Mount Longonot is a dormant volcano located about 90 kilometers from Nairobi. It is a popular hiking destination and can be reached by car or public transportation.

The hike to the summit is about 5 kilometers long and takes about 4-6 hours. The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow. The views from the summit are stunning and offer panoramic views of the Rift Valley. Getting to the crater and walking around it is the ultimate prize if you dare!

The best time to visit  is during the dry season, from June to October. This is when the animals are more concentrated and easier to see. 41. Explore Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary

The Ngong Road Forest Sanctuary is a 1,224-hectare forest located in the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. It is a popular spot for hiking, bird watching, picnicking, and nature photography. 63. All-you-can-eat at the Carnivore

You can tell from the name that meat lovers, this one’s for you! The Carnivore is a restaurant located in Langata, a few minutes-drive from the city center. It is known for its all-you-can-eat meat buffet. The restaurant was opened in 1980 by Martin Dunford, who was inspired by the Rodízio concept of Brazilian churrascaria steak houses. It  has since become one of the most popular restaurants in Nairobi, attracting a mix of locals and tourists.

 It has a large open-air dining area, with a thatched roof and wooden tables. The waiters carry large skewers of meat, such as beef, lamb, pork, and chicken, and carve them onto your plate. You can also order grilled fish and vegetables. The Carnivore is a great place to try a variety of different meats. We are talking lamb, pork, beef, sirloin, ribs, skewered kidneys, ostrich and even crocodile!

Meats are roasted on traditional maasai swords over a huge charcoal pit. This is clearly no ordinary, traditional meat affair! The portions are also very generous. A vegetarian menu is also offered, so no worries if you’re bringing along some vegetarian friends. The Carnivore is ,however, a bit pricey, but it is worth it for the experience. Expect to spend at least $32 (approximately 4,500 Ksh) for the buffet. The restaurant is a great place to go with a group of friends or family.

69. Savor the charm at Nairobi Butterfly Center

The Nairobi Butterfly Centre is located just next to the Karen roundabout, about 10 kilometers southwest of the city.  This hidden gem is housed in a greenhouse that is set up to mimic the butterflies’ natural habitat. The center is home to over 1,000 butterfly species, including some of the most beautiful and rare butterflies in the world.

Stroll through the center and admire the charming sight of these wonderful creatures. Take a guided tour and learn interesting facts about butterflies. Visit the butterfly nursery, where you can see them in the process of hatching and growing. Do not forget to buy souvenirs at the gift shop at the end of your visit.

Since you will be doing quite a bit of walking, wear comfortable shoes. The area is also kept humid to create a suitable environment for the butterflies, so keep that in mind as well. A visit will take at least two hours. Bring a camera too and capture the beauty that abounds here!

The Panari Sky Centre ice skating rink is the only one of its kind in East Africa. It is located on the second floor of the Panari Sky Centre, which is a hotel complex on Mombasa Road.

Hop onto your RV and leave the hustle of the city for a weekend of camping. Jungle Junction is located on Kongoni Road in Karen, Nairobi, Kenya. It has a variety of camping sites, including powered and unpowered sites.

Ozone Trampoline Park is a great place to let loose and have some fun. It is located at the Village Market, off Limuru Road. With its variety of activities, there’s something for everyone at Ozone. Some of the activities include Open Jump: This is the main area of the park where you can jump, flip, and play. Dodgeball is a competitive game of dodgeball played on trampolines.

Warrior Course challenges your balance, agility, and strength while Foam Pit is a giant pit of foam where you can jump and land safely. 77. Picnic time at Paradise Lost

Located barely 10 kilometers from the city center in the nearby Kiambu area, Paradise Lost is a popular picnic site known for its caves. The caves are said to be haunted, and there are many stories and legends about them. Yet that’s not all! There is a stunning waterfall too, campsites, and a vast children’s playground.

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and head over here for some outdoor relaxation. It is a great place to spend a day with family and friends, surrounded by nature’s best. Dress comfortably and pack up your lunch since there are no restaurants inside the park. Carry some money too for entry charges which are as low as 300 Ksh. 78. Take a KICC tour after brunch

Take a trip back in time and learn about the history of Kenya’s 9th tallest building (105 meters) , the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). Built in 1973, the KICC has hosted a variety of events, from international summits to weddings. On a tour of the KICC, you will learn about its impressive architecture, including its soaring spire and its distinctive shape. You will also visit the KICC’s many halls and meeting rooms, where you can imagine the important conversations that have taken place there.

The highlight of the tour is the rooftop terrace, which offers stunning views of Nairobi. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Ngong Hills. The KICC offers two types of tours: the general tour and the VIP tour. The general tour takes you to the main areas of the KICC, while the VIP tour takes you to areas that are not normally open to the public, such as the presidential suite and the press room. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking.

79. Ride Africa’s Largest Ferris Wheel at Two Rivers

Boasting a picturesque, spacious setting, this is one of the best relaxation venues in the Karen neighborhood. You don’t have to be a member to have a blast here. Just make a reservation prior to visiting, and be ready to spend some good money too. Karen Country Club is a family-oriented golf club venue with amazing amenities to cater for everyone.

Golf courses, lush green spaces, tennis court, a restaurant with stunning views, swimming pool, and a kids’ playground are some of the available amenities here. You can easily spend a day with your family, with tons of activity to keep you engaged.  Weekends are busiest, so book ahead if you plan to visit then.

81. A tranquil afternoon at the Langata Botanical Gardens

Langata Botanical Gardens is a lush oasis in the heart of Nairobi, a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. With its winding trails, peaceful lagoon, and colorful flowers, the gardens are a feast for the senses. Go on a nature walk and spot the many different plants and trees. City Market is a popular market in Nairobi, Kenya. It is located in the Central Business District, near the intersection of Muindi Mbingu Street and Koinange Street. The market is a great place to buy souvenirs, handicrafts, and African artifacts. It is also a good place to buy fresh produce, meat, and fish.

The bustling marketplace has over 2,000 stalls and is a great place to experience the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. Find Maasai jewelry, carved wooden animals, and batik cloth, in addition to handicrafts such as baskets, pottery and leather goods. Bargaining is common and most prices are often negotiable at the market.

Since the place can easily get crowded and chaotic, take care of your belongings and be aware of your surroundings, always. Early morning is the best time to visit if you want to avoid the crowd, but late afternoons come with cheaper deals sometimes.

84. Shop cool artisanal goods at Village Market

Located on Limuru Road, The Village Market is a shopper’s paradise, with over 200 stores offering a wide variety of goods and services. From high-end fashion to home goods to electronics, you’re sure to find everything you need (and more) at The Village Market. But what really sets it apart is its atmosphere. The market is located in a lush green setting, with plenty of open space and natural light.

 When you’ve shopped enough, (although that hardly happens), enjoy delicious fare in any of the restaurants at the food court. There is a bowling alley too, a cinema and a children’s play area. Whether you’re looking to do some shopping, catch a movie, or simply relax in a beautiful setting,  there is something for everyone. Heads up though; be prepared to spend. It’s a bit pricey.
