Why take this tour?
If you have only one day to see Prague, you want the real Prague, and riding that tourist bus is not enough, this is the tour for you!
9 am Your guide meets you at your hotel, located in “Lesser Town”. As you requested a mix of major landmarks and some of the more hidden, non-touristy Prague, the day starts with an early visit to the Charles bridge, before the crowds get there – for an emotional meeting with one of Europe’s most romantic bridges.
From there you slip into the Jewish Town, spectacularly preserved from Nazi occupation, and now a quiet and atmospheric district. On the way, you catch a glimpse of the Rudolfinum theater, and the view on the Castle hill across the River.
You then head into the Old Town, and enter Staromak (Old Town square), the city’s historic city and the meeting point of Europe’s jet set. We enjoy the Old Town – the medieval slave market, the narrow streets, Metternich’s one-time favorite tavern, Mozart’s all-time favorite theater etc.
The guide has timed it so you can attend the 11 am chiming of the Astronomical clock – another celebrated city landmark, and Europe’s oldest functioning public tower clock.
Your guide arranges for a peek into Charles University – her Alma Mater. She explains the curriculum and the graduation rituals at this institution Praguers are so proud of.
We take a bit of time to stroll about the local stores, mingle with locals of Prague and indulge in a bit of people-watching.
With lunch time nearing, your group decides to lunch in romantic, quiet Kampa district. You cross the river heading to the Castle and along the way you spot the canal of the devil, the John Lennon wall, Beethoven’s favorite residence etc. At 1pm you sit in an out-of-the-way inn for lunch. Fluent Czech is mandatory here! and the guide helps you through the menu.
After lunch, we catch a romantic tram up to the Castle. Exploration starts from the very top, the eerie section void of tourists, and the part that reveals the most about the history of the castle grounds. This includes the church where military men would be blessed before battle, the interrogation rooms of the Communist days, the military arsenals, a monastery, the prostitution row of the olden days, and a statue to the failed WWII leader.
Along the way the guide takes you to some spectacularly steep vistas. With the guide’s assistance you identify the city landmarks you became so familiar with earlier in the day, on both sides of the river Vltava/Moldau.
You then make your entry into the better-known and grand section of the castle grounds. This is where so much of Czech history happened: national independence, Hitler’s curse, liberation from communism by Nobel Prize Vaclav Havel to cite a few, plus the house of Franz Kafka, the #1 national Czech writer, who wrote in German.
The finale is a breath-taking view over the roof-line of Lesser Town. It’s a little past 4pm. Before you part, the guide suggests places to sit down and take a rest from the weather outside – a little too hot in Summer, and definitely too cold in Winter. You share tips for evening outings and for out-of-town excursions.
