10 Amazing Restaurants in Rome

Rome: prepare to eat. If there’s one thing I had to learn the hard way about this city, it’s that this is not the place for diets, resistance or withholding simple pleasures from yourself.

This is a city of indulgence, in every imaginable way. Italians enjoy nothing more than doing as little as possible, with maximum possible enjoyment. It’s admirable, really.

In the spirit of pleasure at all times, here are 10 amazing restaurants to consider spending some time in when in Rome.

1. Aroma in Rome

Aroma is the kind of Roman restaurant that you dreamed of experiencing before you knew it existed. It’s on the top story of the Palazzo Manfredi, right across the street from the Colosseum.

So essentially, you eat with the entire monument in full view at all times. By night, it is something out of a fairytale, with the best seats being by the windows or on the terrace. Book in advance and prepare to splurge — when in Rome!

2. Da Fortunato n Rome

I pity any restaurant that has to follow the spot I mentioned first, but Da Fortunato does a pretty good job of compensating with their incredible menu.

This restaurant is right across from another important Roman monument, the Pantheon. The food is traditional but with a modern flair to keep to their contemporary theme. They are known for their outer worldly Carbonara.

Try book for a table outside!

3. La Pergola in Rome

La Pergola is up north of the Vatican, and is the restaurant you’ll find at the top of every “lavish restaurants in Rome” list.

Oh, it’s lavish. It’s a Roman royals dream space, boasting views over the whole city with the dome of St Peter’s in full sight by day and by night.

Bookings are essential at la Pergola. And this is fine dining at Italian optimum; prepare to be blown away.

The Trattoria Otello is my personal rendition of an amazing restaurant in Rome. It’s in no was as lavish as the few mentioned above, but the ambiance and food are so overwhelming that you’ll leave feeling… amazing.

It’s in the northern part of the Trastevere. Trattoria Otello is cozy, wholesome and soulful. It’s all about the food here, and the way in which the food makes the people feel and vise versa.

If you really want your mind blown there are few better places than a restaurant dating back to 1860 Rome.

Piperno really has been here that long. They specialize in Roman-Jewish cuisine served in an intimate setting with a beautiful ancient courtyard with outdoor service.

In spite of the quality, everything is fairly priced. The do, however, require appropriate dress code for all diners; don’t arrive in flip flops, shorts or sports jackets.

7. Mirabelle in Rome

Let’s talk about restaurant views again. Mirabelle is a spot that boarders the Villa Borghese on the right bank; it’s on the top floor of an old building, offering panoramic views from everywhere in the space.

The terrace gets booked out months in advance, given that this is Michelin Star dining after all.

8. Babette in Rome

Babette is an amazing, quirky quality dining spot also just outside of the Villa Borghese, right behind the iconic Piazza del Popolo.

It’s a French and Italian fusion kitchen, executed to perfection. Despite the quirky interior, this is a very calm place to dine over fine wine and good conversation. Dress for this one; not as a prerequisite but just because it’s appreciated.

9. Il Gabriello in Rome

Il Gabriello is close to Babette, and is an antithetic, traditional Italian experience.

The set up is like a secret cave, with low arches, exposed brick and dinner by candlelight. They are booked out early in the day, so call ahead if you’d like to dine here. This spot comes famously recommended by Rick Steves. They are also really good with children; an ideal place to eat for families.

Light and bright like your grandmothers house, Il Nido del Pettirosso lies between Monti and Trevi.

It’s an incredible little spot for a traditional dinner before heading out on the town. On that note, they are only open for dinner service, so don’t show up here for lunch.

Two words:  chocolate souffle.
