10 Things To Eat in Trastevere, Rome

Compared to Trevi or Monti, Rome’s Trastevere neighborhood is far more diverse and inclusive of cuisines from around the world. More than this, restaurants in the Trastevere are also more creative with their menus; there is a restaurant here where you eat out of egg shells… but I’ll get to that later!

Visit Rome’s most colorful and diverse area for as many dining experiences in Rome as you can. Remember, there is no public transport once you cross the river, and it’s easiest to enter the Trastevere by waling from the Circo Massimo metro stop on the right bank.

1. South East Asian: Bali Bar in Trastevere, Rome

Bali Bar is fast becoming the most sought after dining spot in all of the Trastevere. It’s a moody lit restaurant with alines themed interior. The menu is a combination of Indonesian, Thai and Vietnamese and it is outstanding.

The restaurant and kitchen stay open until 2am, and they (surprisingly) have a shisha smoking lounge in the back. I would say that on a weekend booking is essential.

2. Indian: Jaipur in Trastevere, Rome

Jaipur remains one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in Rome that didn’t include pizza or pasta. Indian travelers to Rome agree that this is about as authentic as the cuisine can get outside of the homeland, and if you’re a curry lover like me, you’ll be in your element.

The food is of great variety and especially inclusive of vegans and vegetarians. Dine here with a friend or five so that you can fill your table with an array of dishes to dig into.

3. Mexican: Pico’s Taqueria in Trastevere, Rome

One thing you must do in the Trastevere is take a guided walking tour and see the Basilica di Santa Maria. Afterwards, you can wander on into Pico’s, the hole-in-the-wall taqueria bringing Mexico to Rome.

It’s tacos, burritos and quesadillas deluxe! You won’t find nachos here but there are tortilla chips and all you can eat salsa. They have imported Mexican beers, too!

4. Greek: Akropolis in Trastevere, Rome

The only way to find decent Greek food outside of Greece is for someone local to recommend a spot to you. You simply can’t trust the internet with such a responsibility.

Akropolis was recommended to me by Costa, a Greek man who I sat next to on a flight to Paris, oddly enough.

It’s as authentic as it gets, and extremely unpretentious, which I love!

5. Kebab: Shisha e Kebab Roma in Trastevere, Rome

The name of this spot says it all: traditional kebabs enjoyed amongst all the shisha you can smoke.

Whether you like your kebabs plated, wrapped or in a shawarma they’ll do it with a smile. This is a very low-key little eatery, so don’t expect much from the decor. Open until 2am so keep this as a late night dining option when the Trastevere bars send you home!

6. Street Eats: Mammò Street Food in Trastevere, Rome

Nowhere does street sandwiches like this little shop in the Trastevere. You’ll select your choice of bread or bagel, choose your fresh veggies, select your cured meats and top it off with spices and sauces.

A simple concept that goes a long, long way. Especially at 2am when the bars send you home, but you don’t feel like kebab!

7. Sushi: Coffee Pot Trastevere in Trastevere, Rome

What happens at 2am when you feel like neither kebab nor street food? You go to the Coffee Pot, of course.

This sushi restaurant in the Trastevere is open until 3am, daily. There is nowhere else in Rome where one can eat sushi cuisine this late into the evening, and certainly not seven days a week.

It’s a charming, ambient little restaurant. On Saturday evenings there is a live DJ to carry the night through.

You can eat everything from diner breakfasts to fish & chips; French pastries to seafood risotto. It’s not cheap but it is fast, good and inclusive to all diets.

9. Toast: Capatoast in Trastevere, Rome

What was the Trastevere lacking up until very recently? A toast bar!

Yes, a place you can go to get some good old takeaway toast, any way you like it.

Their varieties are extensive and they do offer a build your own option where you can to your toast as you desire. One of the easiest meals to hold and eat as you wander around the Trastevere.

If you though the toast was bizarre, then wait for the eggs.

Eggs is a restaurant in the Trastevere where the entire menu is centered around eggs in some way, shape or form. Even the cocktails make use of yolk or whites as key ingredients.

What they are doing is unusual, exciting and impressive. There is a lot of hype around this spot, don’t miss it!
