10 Things To Eat in Monti, Rome

Monti is Rome’s quiet treasure. It’s the district that lies immediately north of the Colosseum, and what it lacks in attractions it makes up for in hospitality.

This is a tranquil neighborhood in which to enjoy glass of wine at sunset, a slice of pizza between guided walking tours, or a scoop of gelato as you roam aimlessly through the streets.

Here are ten cuisines available to you in Monti for when a sit down dinner is on the cards:

1. Japanese: Temakinho in Monti, Rome

Temakinho is technically classified as Japanese, however the cuisine is inclusive of Brazilian food, making it more of a fusion kitchen than anything else.

Temakinho is sushi with a twist — you won’t find more colorful plates in all of Rome. They have poke bowls on the menu as well; all of these can be made vegan upon request.

A fantastic food break for when you reach your capacity on pizza and pasta.

2. Hummus: Humus Bistrot in Monti, Rome

This is an exciting addition to the Roman restaurant scene; an eatery completely dedicated to hummus.

I would call this a health food restaurant through and through. To get the optimum experience you’ll want to order the tasting plate; this way you’ll get to sample the many different types of hummus they make here.

They are inclusive of gluten free eaters here, be sure to mention it to your server so they can bring you the correct bread.

3. Mexican: Tacos & Beer in Monti, Rome

The name of this spot says it all; a lowkey, no frills joint for decent tacos and good beer. Oh, and burritos are on offer as well!

Their beers are authentic Mexican and imported. You’ll enjoy Sol, Corona, Modelo and a bunch more that aren’t usually easy to track down in the Italian capital.

Their tacos are served on flour tortillas, instead of corn. You win some, you lose some.

4. Cantonese: Città in Fiore in Monti, Rome

Italy has a large Asian community, so Chinese food is never that hard to find. Authentic Cantonese food, however, is few and far between, so this eatery in Monti is a hidden gem.

The food is above average in terms of quality and authenticity. They use considerably less oil than other restaurants of similar nature, and I loved every minute of the service. The potions could be a bit bigger, but that being said, the prices here are so low you can always order more.

Another great cuisine for breaking the pizza/pasta binge after a few days in Rome. There are four or five Indian eateries within walking distance of one another in Monti; Mother India has always been my go-to.

The food is great, always fresh and served quickly. Pieces are fair but note there will be a €2 service fee per person added to the bill at the end.

8. Spanish Tapas: 100 Montaditos in Monti, Rome

This little tapas eatery is always full; this is largely thanks to its close proximity to the Colosseum. It sits in southern Monti, so everyone wants to grab food here between the sights and guided walking tours.

The tapas are served over the counter and you’ll have a wide range to choose from. Plates start from as little at €1, with pints of beer from just €2.50 — probably another reason why this spot is perpetually crowded.
