30 Charming Italian Wedding Traditions That Define the Beauty of Romance

As a cultural anthropologist, I consider my self xenophilic. Xenophilia is the love for, attraction to, or appreciation of foreign people, manners, customs, or cultures. Wedding traditions make an important component of many cultures across the world. In my view Italian weddings are steeped in rich traditions that celebrate love and family. Furthermore, they are not just about the union of two individuals but the merging of two families.

One cherished tradition is the “bomboniere,” small gifts given to guests as a token of appreciation. Dancing is also a central element, especially the traditional Tarantella, a lively and energetic folk dance. The cutting of the wedding cake, often a tiered fruitcake, symbolizes the couple’s first task together. For Italians, the emphasis on tradition and family values creates a timeless celebration that captures the essence of romance. Join me in this beautiful reading of 30 charming Italian wedding traditions.

This formal engagement party is hosted by the families to celebrate the couple’s decision to marry. In front of their closest friends and relatives, the engaged couple makes a public vow and promise to wed. It is a way to honor their commitment to marriage after what is typically a long courtship. After the vow, the guests raise a toast to love and wish the couple well on their journey towards marriage.

The engagement ring holds undying promise, traditionally worn on the fourth finger of the left hand. An ancient belief says this finger contains the “vein of love” that runs directly to the heart. Symbolic of devotion, Italian engagement rings dazzle with diamonds or precious gems in elaborate gold or platinum designs. Engravings with initials, wedding dates, or romantic phrases personalize the ring’s pledge for the couple soon to be married.

These rings represent the couple’s eternal promise to faithfully love and cherish each other. The ring is a physical manifestation of the commitment two people make to spend their lives together, signifying the beginning of their sacred bond that will continue eternally.

3. La Serenata: Midnight Melodies

Under a moonlit sky, midnight melodies fill the air flowing from guitar strings and crooning Italian love songs. Strumming a romantic serenade, the groom declares undying affection for his bride-to-be. Standing below the balcony or window, he promises the deepest devotion and excitement for their new life together on their impending final night before sacred marriage. The musical notes carry the groom’s declaration of love through the tranquil night. He bares his heart through song, solidifying his dedication to his darling bride.

4.   Showers of Luck and Fertility

Confetti blesses Italian newlyweds rather than rice. Exiting the church, wedding guests enthusiastically coat the couple in a rainbow of tiny paper confetti carrying symbolic meaning. Five customary colors each bestow unique well wishes – white for purity, green for health, red for passion, gold for wealth, and silver for prosperity. The confetti explosion ignites their new journey.

As the couple steps into their new life together, vibrant confetti rains down upon them infusing blessings of good fortune. Each colorful piece contains traditional meaning, protecting and providing for the couple’s future, and silver for prosperity. The confetti explosion ignites their new journey.

5.  White Dress: Vision of Bridal Purity

Since the 16th century, Italian brides glide down the aisle cloaked in glorious white, evoking a vision of purity, virginity and innocence entering holy matrimony. Elegant formal gowns of lustrous silk, delicate lace, airy tulle or satin exude luxury tailored to the bride’s style. Intricate beading or embroidery complete the dazzling ensemble.

6.   Hey You! No Peeking at the Bride

As per Italian wedding tradition, the blissful bride and groom avoid crossing paths on their long-awaited wedding day, building excited anticipation for their first emotional glance at the altar. Purposefully kept apart all morning, their surprise reunion at the ceremony escalates the thrilling suspense. Preserving that special first glimpse for their walk down the aisle is considered good luck to commence their blessed marriage. Rather than sneak a peek at his gorgeous wife-to-be before the wedding march, the groom honors this beloved ritual for a joyous and lucky union.

In Italian towns and villages, it is a time-honored ritual to ring the bells when a couple marries. As the newlyweds exit the church after the wedding ceremony, the local church bells loudly chime and peal to herald the news of this happy union throughout the community. Bystanders congregate to cheer and applaud the beaming bride and groom as they step out into married life and make their first public appearance amidst ringing bells resounding all around. The reverberating campane bells spread the joyous word to all within earshot.

8.  Single Man’s Last Stand

As a symbol of the groom’s farewell to bachelorhood, during the lively Italian wedding reception, his collection of neckties gets snip-snip-snipped into souvenir keepsakes. After the customary cake cutting, he surrenders his ties so guests can playfully “bid” on them in a fundraiser for the newlyweds. This tradition marks the end of his single status sacrificed for married life. It is the final stand before he sets sail across the sea of matrimony, leaving bachelorhood behind.

Donning elaborate crowns of honor, Italian brides radiate royalty with lace or silk veils and pearl or crystal tiaras glittering majestically. While her veil and train symbolize purity and modesty, the dazzling tiara transforms her into a queen or princess ascending a bejeweled throne. This regal crown celebrates her honorable passage into married life, commanding reverence for the sacred union she enters.

She steps into married life crowned with jewelry as precious as her vows.  In various regions, the bride has a ceremonial crowning towards the end of the festivities. Flower circlets made of myrtle represent love and new beginnings. Some feature family heirloom coins or pearls for prosperity.

10. Festive Procession with Sounds of Celebration to Serenade the Bride

The Italian wedding ceremony joyously commences with a festive procession into the church headed by musicians swirling colorful ribbons while lively dancing down the aisle. Announcing the radiant bride’s arrival with triumphant horns blowing fanfare, elicits vibrant sounds of celebration for the momentous event about to unfold. The jubilant musical parade excites the congregation in anticipation of the beautiful bride and forthcoming union. The olive branches symbolize the hope for tranquility and harmony in the marriage ahead.

13.  Sweets, for Love is Sweet as Candies

The traditional wedding candies given to each guest in Italy are called bomboniere. The name comes from the Italian word bomba, meaning “wrapped sweet.” Popular edible bomboniere gifts include artisan cookies, decadent chocolate truffles, or the iconic sugared almonds. In the days or weeks before the wedding, the bride’s closest female friends will throw her a party to celebrate her last days of being unmarried. It often involves going out to dinner or dancing, always in the company of her best friends. They will spend the evening reminiscing about the bride’s life up to this point and offer their well-wishes for the soon-to-come marriage. The music, dancing, food, and togetherness make this pre-wedding ritual a joyous one full of excitement, support, and farewell to unmarried life.

15.  A Taste of Sweet Destiny

Rather than a tall, layered buttercream confection, the customary Italian wedding cake is millefoglie. The name translates to “a thousand sheets,” describing the many crispy, flakey layers of phyllo dough enclosing sweet custard or pastry cream. Toppings like fruit, chocolate and nuts add interest. This elegant cake represents the many joyful layers of adventures, challenges and blessings that await the bride and groom.

Tarantella is an energetic Italian folk dance frequently performed at weddings to fast 6/8 mandolin, accordion or piano music. In contemporary times, the Tarantella has shed its medicinal connotations and metamorphosed into a joyous expression of marital bliss. As the radiant bride twirls energetically with her guests, the dance has transcended its historical roots, becoming a vibrant symbol of warding off evil spirits and ushering in a wedded life teeming with laughter, delight, and unbridled happiness

At the end of some Italian wedding receptions, the groom may dramatically stomp on a glass to frighten spirits and symbolize that happiness is as fragile as glass. The shards are often collected and preserved wrapped in tulle as a memento. Guests shout “mazel tov!” to wish the couple good fortune. Like the glass, marital joy must be protected and cherished to last a lifetime.

In the mosaic of wedding traditions, this ritual holds a special place. The groom’s deliberate stomping on the glass is not an act of destruction but a symbolic gesture, signifying that happiness, much like the fragile glass beneath his foot, requires careful handling and protection. The shards of the broken glass are not discarded but gathered and preserved —a memento of the pivotal moment when fragility and resilience converged in a single act.

18.  Il Bacio

During wedding receptions in Italy, it is tradition for the guests to chant “kiss, kiss!” or “a bacio, a bacio!” This chanting urges the newly married couple to kiss in front of their family and friends to seal their nuptials with a symbolic kiss. The guests will cheer and clap loudly once the couple shares their public kiss, often while standing in the middle of the dance floor. With raucous encouragement from loved ones, the couple shares this intimate moment and many joyful kisses more at the lively reception to commemorate their blissful union.

19.  The Purse of Promise

The radiant bride carries with her a decorative little silk purse or velvet bag, known as la borsa, into which loving wedding guests traditionally place envelopes containing monetary gifts. Different regions across Italy have various long-held customs regarding the proper timing for the presentation of these gift-filled wedding purses.

20.  The Melody of Matrimony

As the breathtaking bride slowly walks down the flower-strewn aisle on her beloved father’s proud arm, skilled musicians fill the sanctuary with glorious strains of the classic Bridal Chorus from Wagner‘s Lohengrin opera, commonly known as Here Comes the Bride. Other traditional processional or ceremonial songs may include the joyful opening notes of Bach’s Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring.

21.  The Coronation of “Coupledom”

Some traditional Catholic Italian wedding ceremonies include a meaningful crowning ritual where the bride and groom have elaborate flower crowns – often made of fragrant orange blossoms – blessed by the priest and then ceremoniously placed upon their heads. This symbolizes their new royal status as a married couple and the sweetness of their sincere devotion, which is compared to the beauty and purity of a delicate flower. Additionally, the vibrant colors of these floral crowns are believed to represent the joy and prosperity that the couple hopes to cultivate in their shared life journey, fostering a sense of unity and optimism among the guests.

22.  Tokens of Fortuity

Italian brides and grooms often carry or wear various talismans, charms and symbols on their wedding day to bring good fortune, prosperity, or fertility to their marriage. These meaningful lucky tokens can include a classic silver sixpence coin tucked inside her shoe, bright red cornicelli peppers to ward off the envy of others, a white handkerchief representing victory and joy, or a fabled chimera horn representing virility and strength of family.

With all eyes on them, it makes for an enchanting memory during a magical evening celebrating true love. At the song’s conclusion, the guests shower the couple with flowers and confetti as they make their grand exit from the reception hall.

25.  An Intertwined Bond: Handfasting

Some couples choose to commemorate their union through the ancient ritual of handfasting, whereby the bride and groom have their hands symbolically tied together with a cord or ribbon. This physically represents the binding of their two lives into one new family. The cord remains gently tied around their wrists for the duration of the ceremony before being removed to finalize their marriage, emphasizing that this marriage is entered into freely. This ancient ritual dates back centuries and brings deep symbolic meaning to the start of a couple’s life together.
