That same year, in recognition of this achievement, Dragić was named Slovenian Sportsman of the Year. Throughout his career, Goran Dragić has found success in both the NBA and in international basketball, cementing his status as one of Slovenia’s most accomplished basketball players.

15. Detlef Schrempf

Detlef Schrempf was a German professional basketball player who had a successful 16-year NBA career. After playing college basketball for the University of Washington, he was drafted 8th overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1985.

Schrempf played for the Portland Trail Blazers, Seattle SuperSonics, and Indiana Pacers over his NBA career. He was a 3-time NBA All-Star, 2-time Sixth Man of the Year, and was named to the All-NBA Third Team in 1995.

Schrempf helped lead the SuperSonics to the 1996 NBA Finals. He also represented West Germany/Germany in international play, competing in the 1984 and 1992 Olympics and 1983 and 1985 EuroBasket tournaments.

Serge Ibaka is a professional basketball player of Congolese and Spanish descent who plays for Bayern Munich of the German Basketball Bundesliga and the EuroLeague.

25. Šarūnas Marčiulionis

Raimondas Marčiulionis is a retired Lithuanian professional basketball player considered one of the greatest international players ever. He was instrumental in leading the Soviet Union to gold at the 1988 Olympics.

Marčiulionis later won two Olympic bronze medals representing Lithuania in 1992 and 1996. He led EuroBasket in scoring and was MVP in 1995, also earning All-Tournament honors. Marčiulionis was one of the first Europeans to star in the NBA, playing seven seasons there.

He was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and FIBA Hall of Fame for his legendary international career. 26. Rik Smits

Rik Smits was a Dutch professional basketball player who went by the nickname “The Dunking Dutchman.” Standing at 7-foot-4, Smits played his entire NBA career from 1988 to 2000 with the Indiana Pacers after being drafted 2nd overall out of Marist College.

Mirotić was initially drafted 23rd overall by the NBA’s Chicago Bulls in 2011, but didn’t make his NBA debut until 2014. He went on to play several NBA seasons with the Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans and Milwaukee Bucks as one of the top European players in the league before returning to Europe in 2019.

A four-time All-EuroLeague team selection, Mirotić is now back starring in Spain and the EuroLeague where he first built his reputation as an elite European talent.

37. Clint Capela

Clint N’Dumba-Capela is a Swiss professional basketball player who currently plays for the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA. He has emerged as the highest paid Swiss athlete in history through his success in the NBA.

After starting his pro career in France, Capela was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2014. He developed into one of the NBA’s most prolific rebounders and pick-and-roll big men during his years with the Rockets.

In 2020, Capela was traded to the Atlanta Hawks where he continues to be a key contributor thanks to his defensive presence and elite finishing ability. As the top Swiss player in the NBA earning massive contracts, Capela has made history for Swiss basketball.

38. Vassilis Spanoulis

Vassilis Spanoulis is a legendary Greek basketball player and current coach. He was voted the EuroLeague’s greatest player ever in 2023 and had his number 7 jersey retired by Olympiacos that same year.

Spanoulis is considered one of the best European basketball players of all time, captivating fans at his peak. He won numerous Greek League titles with Panathinaikos and Olympiacos Piraeus while also leading Olympiacos to three EuroLeague championships, being named Finals MVP twice.

The point guard earned a record eight All-EuroLeague selections and was the 2010-2020 EuroLeague Player of the Decade. Spanoulis is the EuroLeague’s career leader in total points and was inducted into the Greek Basket League Hall of Fame in 2022.

His clutch play and leadership propelled the Greek national team to medals in major tournaments. Now retired, Spanoulis coaches the Greek club Peristeri Athens and the senior Greek national team after his illustrious playing career.

39. Marco Belinelli

Marco Belinelli is a veteran Italian basketball player who currently serves as team captain for Virtus Bologna in Italy’s top league LBA and the EuroLeague. He was the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft by the Warriors.

Belinelli went on to enjoy a successful NBA career, most notably winning the 2014 championship with the Spurs as the first Italian player to do so. He also won the Three-Point Contest at the 2014 All-Star weekend. Belinelli has been a longtime fixture on the Italian national team, playing in multiple EuroBasket and FIBA World Cup tournaments.

His career highlights include leading Italy to a silver medal at EuroBasket 2013. Now back playing in Italy, the accomplished Belinelli brings his leadership and shooting ability as captain of both Virtus Bologna and the national team.

40. Dennis Schröder

Dennis Schröder is a German professional basketball player currently with the Canadian Toronto Raptors in the NBA. He started his career playing in Germany before being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks in 2013.

Schröder spent his first five NBA seasons with the Hawks followed by two years on the Thunder. He also owns his hometown German team Basketball Loewen Braunschweig, becoming the majority shareholder in 2018.

In 2023, Schröder enjoyed the biggest highlight of his career, leading Germany to its first ever FIBA World Cup championship and being named MVP of the tournament.

His leadership helped Germany reach the pinnacle of international basketball. Now back in the NBA with Toronto, Schröder continues to be one of the top German basketball players in the world.

41. Milos Teodosic

Miloš Teodosić is a star Serbian basketball player who currently plays for Crvena zvezda in Serbia’s top league. He is primarily a point guard and shooting guard. Teodosić is a six-time All-EuroLeague selection and was named EuroLeague MVP in 2010.

He has led the Serbian national team to great success, winning silver medals at EuroBasket 2009, the 2014 FIBA World Cup, and the 2016 Olympics. Teodosić was named to the All-Tournament team in the World Cup and EuroBasket competitions.

He has racked up numerous individual accolades over his esteemed career, including FIBA Europe Player of the Year in 2010. In 2016, NBA coaches voted him the best non-NBA player and he was named European Player of the Year by La Gazzetta dello Sport. Teodosić is recognized as one of Europe’s most accomplished basketball stars over the past decade.

42. Evan Fournier

Evan Fournier is a French professional basketball player who currently plays for the New York– based New York Knicks in the NBA. Earlier in his career, Fournier spent 2007-2009 developing his basketball skills at the prestigious INSEP academy in France.

Fournier has gone on to become one of the top French players in the NBA thanks to his versatile scoring ability and shooting range. After being drafted in 2012, he has had a successful NBA career with stints on several teams including the Knicks, Magic, Celtics and Nuggets.

Fournier has also been a longtime member of the French national team, winning a bronze medal at the World Cup in 2014. His smooth offensive game and perimeter shooting make him a valuable contributor for both his NBA franchise and the French team.

43. Mehmet Okur

Mehmet Okur was a former professional basketball player from Turkey. At 6’11”, he played power forward and center. Okur was known for his three-point shooting ability which spaced the floor.

During his 7 seasons with the Utah Jazz, he emerged as a talented shooter and clutch performer, earning nicknames like “The Money Man” for making big shots under pressure. Okur made history as the first Turkish player to win an NBA title with the 2004 Detroit Pistons.

After retirement, he became the first Turkish coach in the NBA as a player development coach for the Phoenix Suns in 2016. Okur’s shooting touch and championship pedigree made him a trailblazer for Turkish players in the NBA.

44. Juan Carlos Navarro

Juan Carlos Navarro, known as “La Bomba,” was a legendary Spanish basketball shooting guard. During his club career, he won two EuroLeague championships in 2003 and 2010, was named EuroLeague MVP in 2009, Finals MVP in 2010, and to the 2001-2010 All-Decade team.

As captain of the Spanish national team, Navarro won numerous medals including a FIBA World Cup gold in 2006, two Olympic silvers in 2008 and 2012, and two EuroBasket golds in 2009 and 2011, being named to the All-EuroBasket Team twice and MVP in 2011.

His nickname “La Bomba” came from his signature teardrop shot that he perfected. Navarro retired as one of the most accomplished European players ever, winning titles and MVPs at every level.

He is now the team manager for FC Barcelona after a career defined by clutch shooting and leadership for both his club and country.

45. Boris Diaw

Boris Diaw is a former French basketball player who now serves as president of Metropolitans 92 in France’s top league. Diaw enjoyed a successful 14-year NBA career, most notably winning the 2006 Most Improved Player award with the Arizona-based Phoenix Suns and an NBA title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014.

He was also a longtime captain for the French national team, leading them to medals in major tournaments like the World Cup, EuroBasket, and Olympics. His national team highlights include winning EuroBasket 2013, as well as being named to the All-EuroBasket Team in 2005.

Since retiring, Diaw has moved into a front office role as president of Metropolitans 92, bringing his leadership and experience to the French club after a decorated playing career for both club and country.

46. José Calderón

José Calderón is a former Spanish basketball player who now works as a special advisor for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Calderón enjoyed a 21-year pro career including 14 NBA seasons, mainly with the Toronto Raptors where he set the league record for free throw percentage in 2008-09 at 98.1%.

He was also a key member of the Spanish national team, winning a FIBA World Cup title in 2006 along with two Olympic silver medals and a bronze. Calderón added a EuroBasket championship in 2011 plus two more silvers and a bronze for Spain.

His stellar international career was recognized with an All-EuroBasket selection in 2007. Now retired, Calderón brings his leadership and basketball expertise to a front office role with the Cavaliers after a highly accomplished playing career.

47. Ersan İlyasova

Ersan İlyasova is a retired Turkish professional basketball player who spent 13 seasons in the NBA, primarily with the Milwaukee Bucks over nine years. In addition to his lengthy NBA career, İlyasova also gained experience playing in Turkey, Spain and the NBA G League.

Despite going undrafted in 2005, İlyasova steadily developed into a productive NBA forward known for his shooting touch and rebounding ability. His most successful NBA stint was with the Bucks where he emerged as a key role player during multiple playoff runs.

İlyasova’s lengthy career showed the ability of European players to adapt to the NBA as he carved out an impressive 13-year run primarily as a stretch power forward.

48. Victor Wembanyama

Victor Wembanyama, nicknamed “Wemby”, is a phenomenal young French basketball player recently drafted first overall by the San Antonio Spurs. At 7’4″, he is tied as the tallest active NBA player.

Wembanyama began his pro career in France’s top league in 2019, winning Pro A MVP and Best Defender in 2023 while also leading the league in scoring, rebounds and blocks. He is a two-time league All-Star and 3-time Best Young Player honoree.

With the French youth national teams, Wembanyama has won two silver medals, including at the 2019 U19 World Cup where he set the FIBA tournament record for blocks per game.

Considered one of the best prospects in years with his incredible length and skills, the young Wembanyama is poised for NBA stardom as he embarks on his rookie season with abundant potential.

49. Franz Wagner

Franz Wagner is a German basketball player currently in the NBA with the Orlando Magic. Before going to the NBA, he played college basketball at the University of Michigan. Wagner grew up playing for the youth teams of German club Alba Berlin, winning Best Young German Player in the top league BBL in 2019.

He has represented Germany in youth tournaments, winning gold at the 2018 Albert Schweitzer Tournament. Wagner was drafted by the Magic in 2021 and joined his brother Moritz Wagner, another former Michigan player, in Orlando.

The young Wagner has quickly established himself as one of Germany’s rising stars thanks to his well-rounded game and defensive skills.

50. Dario Šarić

Dario Šarić is a Croatian professional basketball player who currently plays for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA. He was drafted 12th overall in 2014 by the Orlando Magic. Šarić has played for several NBA teams over his career including the 76ers, Timberwolves, Suns and Thunder.

After being traded to Oklahoma City during the 2023 season, he signed with the Warriors that offseason. In addition to his NBA career, Šarić has been a longtime member of the Croatian national team.

His versatile offensive game and size on the wing have made him a valuable player at both the NBA and international level. Šarić continues to be an important contributor for the Warriors after stops on several teams since entering the league in 2016.

Reliving the journeys of these transcendent European stars rekindled my basketball passion. Their larger-than-life skills and flair fundamentally changed the NBA. Many more untold tales of international hardwood heroes remain.
