7 Best Hostels in Rome

There’s no better way to do Rome on a budget than to opt to stay in one of the city’s many hostels. These are especially handy for solo travelers who would like to make connections during their trip.

Something you should know about Romans is that they don’t skimp on hospitality just because of low prices. Most of the 3 star hotels in Rome are not noticeably different to the 4 stars, and hostels are on par with 2 and 3 star accommodation regardless of the price.

Here are seven of the best that you shouldn’t overlook when making your reservations!

1. Generator Hostel in Rome

If you’re ever in doubt, Europe’s Generator Hostel group are generally always safe bets for quality and affordable accommodation. They have hostels all over the continent, spanning from Paris to Prague and everywhere in-between.

The Generator Hostel in Rome is situated right by Termini train station, where you’d usually first enter Rome via the train from the airport. It’s incredibly central, but also far enough from the historic town that prices can be kept low.

As I said, Romans spare no expense when it comes to being hospitable. This hostel is really on par with a chic, low-cost hotel. This is also a great area to be based in for access to restaurants, shopping and guided walking tours.

2. La Controra Hostel in Rome

La Controra Hostel is also in close proximity to Termini station, but on the western side and not the east like Generator.

This hostel is targeted at travelers who value nightlife and the party scenes. Not in the sense that they are going to wake you up each morning with a cocktail, but rather that they have connections in all the best Roman clubs and entertainment venues, most of which you can take full advantage of.

In fact, for a quiet, homey stay, La Controra is actually very removed from chaotic street life. As a bonus, there is daily room service included in all rates and they even include towels.

3. Free Hostels Roma in Rome

Saving money while traveling is nice, but so is having an outdoor terrace at the place where you are staying.

Free Hostels gives you both; they are known for their giant rooftop terrace that overlooks downtown Monti. All guests have access to this terrace day and night; there are little nooks and corners in which to sit and fairy lights strung across for ambiance.

As far as hostels go this one is definitely more suited to solo travelers who don’t mind sharing spaces with many strangers at once. They have single rooms at higher prices, otherwise it’s cocoon dormitories where you sleep in pod-like things. At least there’s free breakfast!

4. Alessandro Palace Hostel & Bar in Rome

Knowing what I know now, Alessandro Palace Hostel would be my first choice for hostel living were I visiting Rome on a budget.

It really has it all; an outdoor terrace with a phenomenal view, karaoke evenings, a full hosel bar area, concierge-type hospitality, free towels and even organized excursions both day and night.

Traveling as a couple, and knowing what I know now, I would be included to book at the Blue Hostel and Blue Hostel only. This is the most pleasant and charming hostel in all of Rome; it’s not cheap but you pay per room, not person, so splitting costs is very easy.

Those hostels I mentioned that are on par with 3 star hotels? This would be one of them.

7. Hostel Trustever in Rome

For a young, adventurous traveler to Rome there really is no better place to be than in the Trastevere neighborhood. It’s the city’s most buzzing area for nightlife, restaurants and entertainment. Hostel Trustever puts you right in the thick of it!

The Trastevere is across the Tiber River, in Rome’s historic center. Because of this it is important to note that there is little public transport to take you into the neighborhood. The last metro stops on the right bank, and you’ll need to make your way over to the left by foot or in a taxi (which can be pricy).
