The Most Iconic Dior Perfume Commercials

Looking back, most of my childhood can be perfectly placed in linear order in accordance to the relative Dior perfume commercials of the time.

The luxury French fashion house are known for their sporadic worldwide campaigns that usually involve a recognizable actress or model and one of their signature fragrances. There have been many iconic commercials since the early nineties; in no particular order I give you a few of the best.

J’adore Dior

2007

The J’adore commercial is one that has been done twice during Dior’s television reign. The first time we entered the world of J’adore was in 1999, with Carmen Kass as the face of the campaign.

If you’re not familiar with the J’adore campaign, it’s the one that features a lot of gold and untouchable class throughout the aesthetic.

The more famous of the J’adore commercials was the one in 2007, that featured then “golden girl” Charlize Theron; the South African actress who had just previously won the Oscar for best actress in 2004.

Theron was breathtaking in this campaign directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino; the same creative who made the first J’adore commercial back in 1999.

Miss Dior

2017

By the time 2017 rolled around I was a bit older and a bit more image-conscious. Natalie Portman had been part of the Dior family for many years, but seeing her debut this year’s Miss Dior was something unforgettable.

She was the epitome of elegance, yet still the girl next door at the same time. This was one of Dior’s most relatable campaigns as it very much touched on the idea of the rebellious woman, something that has been a poignant subject since 2017 onward.

While this year’s Miss Dior undoubtably stands out in time, I would subjectively say I consider all of Natalie Portman’s contributions to the brand to be iconic. Perhaps you remember Anton Corbijn’s black and white Dior film from a few years earlier?

Hypnotic Poison

2008

Taking it back to 2008, this Dior campaign paired the brand’s “Hypnotic Poison” fragrance with the personality of Monica Bellucci; a match made in marketing heaven some might say.

An interesting choice, bring this famous Italian celebrity to the face of a notorious French brand, but Dior have never been one to stick with French locals when it comes to their global campaigns.

Hypnotic Poison was unlike anything we’d seen from Dior previously. It was dark, seductive and highly tempting. The brand opted for a purple anaconda in place of clothing over Bellucci in order to convey the perfect tone for this berry-based fragrance.

Dior Dune

1995

Dior Dune was one of the more memorable perfume commercials to come out of the early nineties. Most people remember the cover image of the campaign where Angelica Wallgren was photographed caressing an unknown individual boy photographer Tyen.

There was much ambiguity surrounding the identity of individual alongside Wallgren. While it was almost certainly a man, the image was so strategically cropped and well-styled that one might wonder if the campaign were hinting at same sex couples; something that was gaining much worldwide conversation at the time.

Whatever the intention, Dior Dune of 1995 was a wholesome, comforting and extremely natural portrayal of this fragrance and the ease of which it could slide into just about every woman’s life.

Miss Dior Chérie

2007

Miss Dior Chérie showcased a number of iconic adverts throughout the 2000s. It was the campaigns of 2006 and 2007 that really stick in people’s minds to this day, particularly the latter.

The campaign never made it to the motion pictures, but print imagery of Miss Dior Chérie was the back cover of just about every notable magazine in the world at that time. The image was of a blonde model barefoot in a lavish French garden, chauffeur in the background and heels between her fingers, she is every one of us after a long day of keeping up appearances and finally feeling the comedy of it all.

An “infallible fragrance” was the tone of this campaign. It really put Miss Dior Chérie on the buyers list for a lot of unsuspecting individuals worldwide.

Dior Addict to Life

2011

Model Karlie Kloss has walked numerous Dior runways during Paris Fashion Weeks over the years. In 2011 she was selected as the face of Dior’s Addict to Life campaign, another that never quite made it to the big screen but did phenomenal things in print.

Kloss’ unique face was blown up for a full page spread, featuring her simply holding the perfume in question and donning bright purple lipstick.

This was the first big campaign for this particular Dior fragrance; it had never had a face paired with it previously.

Dior Homme

2020

Something to look forward to in the coming months is the very new Dior Homme campaign that features none other than Robert Pattinson front and center.

It’s everything you’d expect from a masculine perfume commercial; sass, sensuality and sex appeal. The dominant male saves the day… again.

I did enjoy Pattinson letting his hair down in the dance scene; it gave an undeniable element of quirkiness to the entire narrative. Expect this all over your television screens very, very soon.

JOY by Dior

2018

Finally, Dior’s 2018 JOY campaign gave us Jennifer Lawrence, some red lipstick and a bright blue splash pool.

The actress sold us the cool fragrance by being the picture of chill as she threw all her qualms to the wind and instead swam laps in a lavish pool overlooking what looks like New York City.

This was a fragrance debut for the house of Dior.
