Rashford scoops the Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year awards

Marcus Rashford ended the PL season as Man  United’s leading goalscorer with 30 to his name

At the end-of-season awards ceremony for Manchester United, Marcus Rashford won a coveted double.

The England forward won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award, which is decided by the fans, after being crowned United’s Players’ Player of the Year for the 2022–23 season on Monday night during a flashy ceremony.

Since Ryan Giggs in 1998, Rashford is the only academy alum to receive the latter honor.

“What an incredible honor to win both Sir Matt Busby and Player’s ‘Player Of The Year’ awards tonight,” Rashford tweeted. “To have the support of both the fans and my teammates means the world – I couldn’t do it without you all. Thanks to the manager & all the staff for their phenomenal help.”

The 25-year-old had a brilliant comeback campaign, scoring 17 goals in 35 Premier League games to help a greatly improved United finish third and qualify for the Champions League in their first season under Erik ten Hag’s leadership.

Additionally, Rashford scored six goals in the Carabao Cup, including one in the championship game, as United defeated Newcastle at Wembley to end their six-year trophy drought. He also scored six goals in the Europa League and one in the FA Cup thus far, with an all-Manchester final against Treble-chasing City looming large the following weekend.

Rashford became the first United player to reach 30 in a single season since Robin van Persie in 2012–13, Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in command, with his goal in the 4–1 thrashing of Chelsea in the penultimate League game of the season at Old Trafford.

Midway through the season, he also had a strong World Cup run with England, scoring twice in the Three Lions’ 3-0 victory over Wales and once in the tournament’s opening rout of Iran in Qatar.

United exercised their option to extend Rashford’s contract by a further 12 months, through June 2024, in December. Ten Hag recently expressed his confidence that a solution would be made in the ongoing negotiations for a long extension, and all parties are eager to work out a settlement as soon as feasible.

In other news on Monday, Brazilian winger Antony earned United’s goal of the season title for his spectacular strike against Barcelona in the Europa League play-off round that he scored at Old Trafford back in February. Antony was competing to be healthy enough for the FA Cup final due to an ankle ailment.
