Best Neighborhoods for Airbnb in Rome

The Airbnb scene in Rome is blowing up. More and more travelers are becoming taken with the idea of spending their trip living inside of the actual home of a Roman local, & more and more Romans are taking to the idea of opening their homes for money.

The result being an ever blossoming Airbnb platform that puts visitors in the heart of the Roman city, without the constraints that come with hotel living.

One can find Airbnb’s in virtually every neighborhood in Rome. Budgets range from low cost to luxury living, and knowing what area is a good living quarter might be overwhelming to outsiders with no prior knowledge of Rome as a destination.

The following are the neighborhoods I’d recommend looking at first if you’re browsing the Airbnb platform.

Airbnb in Trastevere in Rome

Trastevere is one of my favorite neighborhood in Rome, as it is for many others. You’ll notice a shift in energy the minute you cross into this area in the ancient center; you’ll have to do so by foot since there is no public transport access in these parts of the city.

Trastevere is the district right underneath the Vatican City. It’s one of Rome’s trendiest neighborhoods and is known for boutique shopping, cafe dining and wild nightlife that goes on into the early hours of the morning. More than this, it’s filled with astounding architecture and quiet hideaways where you can really immerse yourself in Italian culture.

Trastevere is central to most landmarks in Rome, you can walk across the river to the Colosseum district in a matter of minutes, and a guided walking tour up to the Vatican takes a short time as well.

The Airbnb apartment in Trastevere are most suited to young travelers who intend to spend more time exploring the street life and less time at home. The apartments here are beautiful, but small, due to the ancient nature of these buildings. The further south in Trastevere you go the cheaper the options become, keep this in mind too!

Airbnb in Monti in Rome

Ask a Roman local what neighborhood you should book your stay in Rome in and they’ll nine times out of ten tell you Monti.

Monti is basically the Colosseum district. It’s an area of cobble stone streets, replica buildings and vast public squares. It’s the unofficial arts district of Rome; writers, freelancers, photographers, painters and poets can all be found spending their days in the cafes and wine bars on the Monti streets.

There are weekly markets in Monti, including one for vintage clothing. This is Rome’s best thrift shopping neighborhood, which is usually indicative of an artists village.

Airbnb in Monti is great for anyone with an interest in experiencing the contemporary culture of the ancient city. Monti is wonderfully central and one can access restaurants, bars, nightclubs and museums easily by foot, as well as all of the local landmarks nearby.

Airbnb in Monteverde in Rome

If you were to keep heading south in Trastevere you’d eventually find yourself fin Monteverde. Some travelers feel they need to be within close proximity to any kind of nature when they travel to big cities, especially if this is where they feel most at home and comfortable.

Monteverde is the closest green space in Rome and is one of the more tranquil parts of the city to seek accommodation. It is Rome’s largest urban park, and the suburban neighborhood that surrounds it offers affordable Airbnbs that come with peace and quiet that the north of the city simply isn’t able to offer.

Monteverde is most ideal for families with children looking to Airbnb somewhere they’ll still have easy access to the city center when they need to explore.

There is a total lack of public transport on the left bank of the Tiber river, Monteverde included. So prepare to make use of taxis or Uber whenever you need to go somewhere. Another reason why families thrive out in these parts.

Airbnb in Ghetto in Rome

The Roman Ghetto is the hidden gem of the right bank. It stands as the 300 year old, completely non-gentrified, neighborhood of the Jewish community in Rome.

Today the neighborhood is extremely diverse and holds a number of different religions and cultural communities from around the world. It’s an immigrant village housed in ancient and medieval architecture.

Expect bakeries, bookshops, family run businesses, kosher restaurants, cuisines from around the world and a strong sense of community. The people of the Ghetto in Rome welcome outsiders and love having travelers fill their Airbnbs.

Note that this neighborhood observes the traditional Jewish shabbat; all businesses close down businesses close from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. You can head into the city center nearby when this happens.

Campo Marzio in Rome

Those who’d like to be a little more lavish with their Airbnb stay should take a close look at the Campo Marzio neighborhood.

This land in the city center was once the training ground for ancient army troops. The Renaissance and Baroque eras took over and brought upscale development to the area, making it one of the most sought after places to live in the city.

Known today as the neighborhood of Rome’s most fashionable and affluent individuals, the Airbnb apartments have been designed to match.

Because of Campo Marzio’s close proximity to all of the central landmarks in Rome, one can see just about all of them in one day either on foot of with a guided walking tour.

A beautiful neighborhood for honeymooners, lover or anyone who enjoys luxury fashion and entertainment. This area is also great for yogis visiting Rome; there are many yoga studios scattered through the streets of Campo Marzio.
