10 Cuisines to Eat Near the Vatican

The Vatican sits on the left bank of the Tiber River in Rome. It spans just 100 acres in size, with a population of only 1000 people. Essentially, you can walk right around the Vatican City’s perimeter in under an hour.

There are many places to eat just outside of the Vatican walls. Here are ten cuisines to look out for if you’re in the mood for something other than traditional Italian.

1. Sandwiches: 200 Gradi Near the Vatican

200 Gradi is a sandwich shop. It’s great for a grab-and-go meal as you move through your sightseeing in this area, and it is also a good spot for late night dining near the Vatican. 200 Gradi doesn’t close until 3am daily; much later than any other food spots in this neck of the woods.

The concept is both ready made and build your own. Many options for vegans!

2. Crepes: Creperia Michelangelo Near the Vatican

Not far from the sandwich spot is another late night dining option near the Vatican.

Creperia Michelangelo serves fresh, hot crepes right off the grill. You’ll choose from a generous menu containing both sweet and savory crepe options.

Something to note is that their prices for take-away crepes are lower than for dine-in crepes.

3. Mexican: La Cucaracha Near the Vatican

I am a harsh judge of character when it comes to any Mexican food outside of Mexico, especially Mexican food in Europe.

La Cucaracha is a festive and tasty rendition of the cuisine; authentic in some ways, experimental in others. If you’re simply in the mood for some traditional Mexican dishes and a decent Margarita, then this is the spot.

4. Cafe: Borgo Nuovo Near the Vatican

Admittedly, most of the menu at Borgo Nuovo is traditional Italian, so escaping pasta near the Vatican will have to wait. They do, however, have a number of other cafe-style dishes on the menu.

What I like about Borgo Nuovo is the affordability. You’ll leave here stuffed, but won’t have paid more than €10 for your meal.

5. Seafood: La Caletta St. Peter Near the Vatican

This seafood spot is near the southernmost border of the Vatican. It’s more of an upmarket dining experience; one where you’ll definitely need a reservation for a Friday evening.

This restaurant is seafood galore. Whether you like your fish raw, cooked or a bit of both, there’s going to be something pleasing for you on the menu.

6. Pizza: Forno Feliziani Near the Vatican

I know we agreed to take a break from Italian cuisine for a minute, but Forno Feliziani near the Vatican deserves a mention.

This is authentic Roman-style pizza at its best. Everything is pre-made and kept behind a warming counter, all you have to do is point out the slice/s of your choice.

In addition to great pizza, they have an equally as great bakery.

7. Brazilian: Temakinho Rome Borgo Near the Vatican

Temakinho is more than just a Brazilian eatery; it’s actually a Brazilian interpretation of Japanese cuisine.

What this creates is a unique culinary fusion, one that I’m sure to never miss on a trip to Rome.

If you’re a lover of either of these cuisines, particular the sushi and poke side of Japanese food, then Temakinho is going to blow your mind. Book in advance for this one!

8. Indian: Kohinoor Near the Vatican

As far as Indian food near the Vatican goes, there isn’t a whole lot of it. Kohinoor is one of the only worthwhile spots for this cuisine in this neighborhood; thankfully, it’s good.

The menu is mostly curry based, with a few traditional Indian kebab options. They do a small, cheesy pizza for children upon request.

9. Filipino: Neighborhood Filipino Restaurant Near the Vatican

Filipino food is something I rarely get chance to sample, so finding is this close to the Vatican was quite a nice surprise.

For starters, the space is always filled with actual Filipino people, either living in Rome locally or enjoying the city as travelers. This speaks for the authenticity of the food.

Try not to get judgmental on the pace of the service. Everything is made fresh, so the kitchen works a bit slower than usual.

10. Chinese: New Town Near the Vatican

If you’re not ready to experiment with the Filipino side to Asian dining, then stick to good old Chinese.

On the westernmost boundary of the Vatican is a little spot called New Town. Despite appearing quite up market, this is just an inexpensive, authentic diner with quality food. Good options for vegetarians.
