Born Matthew Langford Perry in Williamstown, Massachusetts on 19th August 1969, Perry grew up in Ottawa, Canada thanks to his parent’s separation when he was still very young. His mother, Suzanne Marie Langford – Morrison, was a Canadian journalist while his father, John Bennett Perry, was an American actor and model. He had a close relationship with his father, who greatly influenced his interest in acting.   

Matthew had five half siblings, Maria from his dad’s side, plus Caitlin, Emily, Will, and Madeline from his mum’s side. He maintained close relationships with all members and described them as supportive and a source of strength throughout his life. 

2. He Had Canadian American Citizenship 

While Matthew was born in the US, his mother was Canadian. This automatically granted him Canadian citizenship by descent. He spent his childhood moving between the U.S. and Canada and this exposure to both cultures played a role in shaping his identity. He started acting out by stealing money, smoking, letting his grades fall, and beating up fellow pupils when he was just 10 years old.

He was a talented tennis player with national ranking in Canada, and his father believed the stronger competition in LA could further advance his skills.

Matthew Perry began his acting career at a relatively young age. He began his journey in the world of entertainment as a child actor, whereby his very first credited role was at the tender age of 10, in a Canadian television movie called 240-Robert in 1979. This marked a turning point in his life, as he took ownership of his struggles and started on the road to recovery even though he was experiencing his fair share of relapses throughout the years. Matthew became a vocal advocate for addiction awareness and recovery, and even gave his house as a treatment center to support individuals affected by addiction. 

20. Matthew Perry Rested In October 2023

Matthew sadly passed away some minutes after 4pm on 28th October 2023. He was found unconscious in a hot tub at his home in Los Angeles. He was 54 years old at the time. That was one of the saddest Saturdays in 2023. His death sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and left fans around the world mourning the loss of a beloved actor and comedian. He was buried a week later at Los Angeles’ Forest Lawn Memorial Park on 3rd November 2023. 

An autopsy report revealed that the cause of death was “the acute effects of ketamine,” plus coronary artery disease, drowning, and the side effects of buprenorphine. While his absence is deeply felt, his legacy lives on. May the floppy-haired charmer rest in eternal peace
