Toronto has been referred to as Canadian Hollywood. A lot of filming happens there as well as the annual Toronto Film Festival.

The Toronto Theatre District has the largest concentration of stage theatres in the whole of Canada. This attracts large tours from Broadway and West End productions.

Such amenities, therefore, have given talented Canadians the platform to express their skills on stage as well as on the silver screen.

These actors have made it not only at home but in Hollywood too. You may know some of them like Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds and Jim Carrey. Some of them may come as a surprise.

Marc-André Grondin began acting in 1989 and is best known for playing Xavier Laflamme in the 2011 ice hockey thriller Goon.

He earned a well-deserved Jutra Award for Best Actor for his work in Jean-Marc Vallée’s coming-of-age film C.R.A.Z.Y.

The Chameleon actor was also nominated for Best Actor at the 8th Canadian Screen Awards for his excellent performance in Mafia Inc. He participated in the 2010 Festival du Nouveau Cinéma Awards as one of the judges.

15. Michael Cera

Michael Austin Cera is a Canadian actor and musician. He started his career as a child actor, voicing the character of Brother Bear on the children’s television show The Berenstain Bears and portraying a young Chuck Barris in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.

Cera made his Broadway debut in the 2014 production of Kenneth Lonergan’s This Is Our Youth. For his performance in the 2018 production of Lonergan’s Lobby Hero, Cera was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play. Cera starred in the revival of Lonergan’s The Waverly Gallery.

After graduating from a theatre degree program at York University in 2001, she worked in Canadian television and film productions, such as the drama film, Perfect Pie in 2002, for which she received a Genie Award nomination, and the comedy film My Name Is Tanino in 2002, and the comedy series Slings and Arrows from 2003 to 2005, for which she won a Gemini Award.

After a brief sabbatical, she returned to prominence in 2009 by appearing in the political thriller State of Play, the romance The Time Traveler’s Wife, and the 2009 mystery film Sherlock Holmes.  This was followed by roles in the superhero film Doctor Strange in 2016, its 2022 sequel, the romantic drama Disobedience in 2017, and the comedies Game Night in 2018 and Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga in 2020.

13. Finn Wolfhard

Finn Wolfhard is a Canadian actor and musician. He gained recognition for playing Mike Wheeler in the Netflix series Stranger Things. 

His film roles include Richie Tozier in the film adaptation of Stephen King’s horror novel It in 2017 and its sequel It: Chapter Two in 2019, Boris Pavlikovsky in the drama film The Goldfinch in 2019, the voice of Pugsley Addams in The Addams Family in 2019, and Trevor in the supernatural film Ghostbusters: Afterlife in 2021.

Wolfhard made his directorial debut with the comedy short film Night Shifts in 2020. He was the lead vocalist and guitarist for the rock band Calpurnia and is currently a member of The Aubreys.

Matthew Perry is a Canadian actor, comedian, and producer. He is best known for his role as Chandler Bing on the NBC television sitcom Friends, which ran from 1994 to 2004.

Along with starring in the short-lived television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Perry also appeared in several films, including Fools Rush In, Almost Heroes, The Whole Nine Yards, and 17 Again. In 2010, he expanded his resume to include both video games and voice-over work when he voiced Benny in the video game Fallout: New Vegas.

Perry was the co-creator, co-writer, executive producer, and star of the ABC sitcom Mr. Sunshine, which ran from February to April 2011. In August 2012, Perry began starring as Ryan King, a sportscaster, on the NBC sitcom Go On. The series was cancelled on May 10, 2013.  Perry co-developed and starred in the CBS sitcom The Odd Couple portraying Oscar Madison from 2015 to 2017.
Matthew Perry passed away in October 2023.

Reeves was born in Beirut but grew up in Toronto, Canada. He is popularly referred to as the nice guy.

His movie debut was in 1989 in the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Two sequels to the movie were released in later years: A Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991) and Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020).

Reeves loved hockey and hoped to be an ice hockey champion. This dream was quashed after he suffered an injury.

He went back to acting which he had started at the age of 9. In 1994, Keanu had his big break in the movie Speed.  

The film gained international success in getting him supporting roles in movies.

Keanu’s other successful movies include The Matrix and Man of Tai Chi which he directed.

9. Mike Myers

He started his acting career at London’s Comedy Store and Second City. The latter was in Toronto and Chicago. His first leading role was in the movie Wayne’s World (1992–1993).

Towards the end of the 1990s, He appeared in his movie series Austin Powers (1997- 2002)

Mike also doubles as a voice actor in the Shrek movies. He is a successful screenwriter too.

8. Jim Carrey

Jim was born in Newmarket, Ontario and has gone on to create a reputable brand in Hollywood.

You may have seen him in the movies: Ace Ventura: Pet Detective(1994), and Dumb and Dumber(1994). His trademark has always been goofy and hilarious performances.

His big break was in 1994 from his role in the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

Carrey has also had serious roles that have been successful too such as The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

7. Joshua Jackson

Joshua started as a child actor. His mother was a casting director.

He was born in Vancouver, British Columbia but grew up in California.

He got bigger roles in the movie The Mighty Ducks and the series Dawson’s Creek.

His other serious roles were in the shows Fringe, The Affair, When They See Us, and, most recently, Little Fires Everywhere.

6. Ryan Gosling

Gosling was born in London, Ontario. As a teenager, he went for auditions in Montreal and was featured on Disney Channel’s Mickey Mouse Club.

Reynolds started his acting career in a Canadian teen soap in the early 90s. He has also featured in romantic movies like Definitely Maybe, The Proposal and Adventureland. 

As a talented actor, Reynolds has had to fit into character and this includes taking intensive physical training. He did this for his role in the 2004 Blade: Trinity. One of his big roles was in the movie series Deadpool (2016).

4. Kiefer Sutherland

His acting career started in the 80s where he featured in several teen shows. They are Stand by Me, Young Guns, and The Lost Boys.

He won an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and Two Satellite Awards. All these were from his role as Jack Bauer in the series 24.

Rogen started as a stand-up comedian in Vancouver before moving to clubs in New York and Los Angeles.

While in Los Angeles he worked as an actor and a writer. He, later on, moved to films and produced the show The Boys.
