Best Gay Bars in Rome

All public establishments in Rome, especially nightlife venues, are gay friendly. And if they’re not, or you’ve encountered the opposite, then you need to make it known on as many platforms as possible.

For those nights where you want to go somewhere extra gay oriented, there are a few gay bars around the city center.

Coming Out in Rome

This aptly named bar is right next to the iconic Colosseum. To make the best use of their space, they have a great outdoor street and terrace area that overlooks the grand attraction nearby.

This is one of the better known gay bars in Rome, popular amongst both locals and travelers almost every day of the week. One major perk is that they stay open until 5:30am every day, close for an hour and a half, and then reopen at 7am for breakfast service.

That’s right, it’s a bistro as well. And a lunch spot, and open for dinner before the mayhem at the bar ensues.

Coming out has been one of the most important spaces for gay people in Rome for a long time. They provide a safe space for the queer community to head to at virtually any hour of the day. Like I said, all public facilities in Rome should be gay-friendly at this point, but it’s nice to know that Coming Out has your back when needed.

During the day this is a great brunch and lunch spot; good for families with kids.

Giam in Rome

If you’re part of the LGBTQ+ community (or even just an ally), and you’re in Rome on a Saturday night, the visiting this venue is an absolute must.

There is nothing like it in all of Rome. It’s a show hall, bar, disco and social space all in one. And that’s exactly what a Saturday night at Giam consists of: a show (usually drag but sometimes erotica), excellent drinks, music to dance the night away and hoards of people to make connections with.

I keep referring to Saturday nights because this is the only night of the week when Giam is open for business.

There’s not much else happening this side of the Tiber apart from a few trattorias and a guided walking tour or two. If you walk a few minutes north from Giam you’ll come to Rome’s Gay Village. Something I’ll leave for you to explore on your own.

OPENING HOURS: Saturday — 11:30pm to 5:30am

G Bar in Rome

As a student or budget traveler in Rome who also wants in on the LGBTQ+ nightlife, one should head to G Bar.

It’s in the Trastevere neighborhood, which is filled with bars, live music venues, cafes and dance halls as is. Compared to the rest, G Bar is tiny; but you’ll have a strong sense of community here and everyone just wants to have a good time.

Be warned, it’s a young crows. And drinks are exceptionally cheap so everyone is also here to get really drunk. Probably not the gay bar for an intimate conversation or a first Tinder date.

On Friday evenings there’s a $5 special that gets you a cocktail and a shot. It’s fun, it’s cheap and it’s downright messy: just your average night at G Bar in Rome. They are open seven days a week.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
OPENING HOURS: Monday & Sunday –  5pm to 2am
ADDRESS: Vicolo de’ Cinque, 60, 00153 Roma RM, Italy
Metro Station: Circo Massimo

My Bar in Rome

My Bar is situated back by the first bar we looked at, the one next to the Colosseum. This one also offers impressive street views of the monument, and while the opening hours aren’t as extensive as Coming Out, they do open really early and close relatively late.

From 8am this is a family bistro; breakfast foods, brunch specials and meals to get you energized between sights and guided walking tours. Tourists absolutely love this spot as a restaurant; it is only after 7pm or so that the LGBTQ+ community begins to filter in for evening shenanigans.

I encountered a man visiting Rome who said that My Bar was the only bar during his trip that had made him feel safe and welcome. While this still makes me incredibly sad, I’m glad this space exists for us all to enjoy.

Prices are reasonable. A plate of pasta goes for around €9 and drinks around €5.

Company Roma in Rome

Each European city needs at least one iconic bear’s den, and this is Rome’s.

Company Roma is right by the Termini train station in the city center. They open late and close at 3am, so you’ll want to eat out or drink somewhere before heading over here.

They have a mezzanine level, and a basement (in true bear style). What happens down here, stays down here. And visitors are encouraged to come with a tolerant and open mind, or not at all.

You can have a relaxed beer on the mezzanine level and dance to pop classics. The staff are friendly, drinks are reasonable and the space is never overcrowded.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
OPENING HOURS: Monday to Sunday — 10:30pm to 3am
