Top 10 Facts about Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Nice

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was founded in 1929, just nine days after the Black Friday Wall Street Crash, and is now world-renowned for its extensive collection of modern art. What began with eight prints and one drawing has grown to include approximately 200,000 pieces from all over the world in a variety of genres, including millions of films and film stills. Here are ten facts about MoMA that you might not know.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice is regarded as one of the city’s most interesting museums. It is located in the city center and displays contemporary and modern art.

Perhaps I am ignorant, but the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice (Musée d’art moderne et contemporain), abbreviated MAMAC, does not completely captivate me. Most of the works collected there are not what I would call art. I much prefer the Museum of Fine Arts and the Massena Museum.

With a few exceptions, MAMAC is a collection of random items for me. Despite this, I read in the guidebooks that this is an important museum in Nice that must be seen. If you’re into contemporary art, this could be the place for you.

Artist and musician David Byrne designed nine sculptural bike racks that were installed around the city for 11 months in 2008, thanks to a collaboration between the Department of Transportation and art gallery PaceWildenstein, including one entitled MoMA, at the museum’s entrance.

6.The first Sculpture Garden was planned in just one night

In one night, the first Sculpture Garden was arranged. The current space, devoted solely to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, was designed in 1953 and serves as the museum’s heart. An actual Paris Subway entrance gate is one of the many intriguing sculptures. This cast iron arch, designed by Hector Guimard in 1900, adds a charming touch to the park walkways.

The museum is made up of four square, windowless concrete towers. They are linked by glazed corridors shaped like arches.

If the windows that cover these passages were cleaned, one could even enjoy a pleasant view through them. The approach to the building’s entrance is also filthy.

During several of my visits, the stairs leading to the entrance were littered with broken bottles of alcohol and other trash.

The museum’s collection is largely composed of art produced after 1950 by the creators of European New Realism (primarily French), American pop art, and minimalism. The momentary exhibitions are on the first floor, while the permanent exhibitions are on the next two. There is an observation deck at the very top from which you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Nice.

9.MAMAC in Nice – valuable information before visiting the phenomenal museum for the very first time

The museum first opened its doors in 1990. It is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Admission tickets are 10 euros, but you can also purchase a ticket for 20 euros that allows you to visit other museums in Nice within seven days. The museum allows photography, but no flash is permitted.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice is easy to find because it is right next to Garibaldi Square and just behind the unsightly theater at the end of the Paillon Promenade.

It’s also worth noting that the building has a public library on the ground floor, where an interesting sculpture stands in the garden. Sacha Sosno’s Tête Carrée was created in 2001. This massive square head always draws the attention of passing tourists. It is also clearly visible from the MAMAC’s roof terrace, as is the nearby Old Town of Nice.

The Museum is close to Place Garibaldi. It is shaped as a tetrapod arch straddling the course of the Paillon and was designed by two architects, Yves Bayard and Henri Vidal. The monumentality of the project developed to cross the Paillon allows connection from the Museum to the Theater via a terrace called the Promenade des Arts.

The building’s architecture is inspired by neo-classicism rules, as evidenced by its square plan. The available space is approximately 4,500 m2 and is divided into ten showrooms. Smooth white Carrara marble covers the facades.

The entrance and shop are located on the level of the Niki de Saint Phalle Esplanade, which overlooks the Place Yves Klein. 

The first floor gallery spaces are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, while the second and third floors are dedicated to permanent collections. The entrance is free, and it is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., except on Mondays and certain holidays.
