The iconic domes and minarets of Istanbul’s historic skyline may soon be upstaged by a new sight: long lines at the Turkish visa counters. From April 15th 2024 onward, Indian and Nepalese passport holders catching connecting flights through Istanbul to Mexico, Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela will need to obtain an electronic Airport Transit Visa (e-ATV) beforehand.

What’s driving this new bureaucratic hurdle? Stricter regulations for certain nationalities transiting Turkish air corridors, according to Tuesday’s announcement from the Turkish Embassy in New Delhi. The compulsory e-ATV aims to smooth the transit experience while bringing Turkey in line with international aviation norms.

“Failing to secure this electronic stamp could lead to severe travel headaches,” cautions seasoned Delhi-based travel consultant Naina Venktesh. “Passengers may get unceremoniously bounced from their flight if they arrive at the departure gate without  e-ATV printout.”

Fortunately, the application process seems straightforward and free of charge. Travellers simply need to fill out an online form  and receive confirmation before their Turkey layover.

“It’s a nuisance having to juggle yet another pre-travel hurdle,” laments Mumbai businessman Sidharth Khanna, who frequently transits Istanbul en route to meetings in Mexico City. “But I’d rather spend 10 minutes online than risk getting stranded and wasting thousands on re-booked tickets.”

While the reasons behind the new policy remain hazy, some cite Turkey’s efforts to tighten monitoring over the constant stream of travellers across its airport transit zones. Whatever the motivations, the e-ATV will soon become mandatory reading for Indian travellers headed southwest across continents on those long-dreamed bucket list adventures.
