Things to do near the Pompidou museum
There is a varied array of things to do near the Pompidou museum. Museums, monuments, shopping, concerts, or just strolling in authentic Parisian neighbourhoods… Read on if you want to know more about the numerous activities you can do near the Pompidou museum.
Head to the ‘Ile de la cité’
Of course, among the things to do near the Pompidou museum, you can cross the Seine and head to the Ile de la Cité. There, you can visit the famous Notre Dame Cathedral, known for its beautiful Gothic architecture, its stained glasses, and its gargoyles. Also, don’t miss the nearby Holy-Chapel. Of early Gothic style, it has very impressive stained glasses. If you still have time, you might also consider going to the Conciergerie, a former prison where Queen Marie-Antoinette spent her last night before being executed during the French revolution.
Visit the Louvre Museum
The Louvre Museum is not so far away, so you might want to include it in your things to do near the Pompidou museum. Don’t miss the Mona Lisa or the ancient Egyptian collection, which are the most famous highlights of the museum. But, as the museum is huge, you will probably want to concentrate on only a few collections.
Stroll in the Marais neighbourhood
Visiting the nearby neighborhood called ‘Le Marais’ is one of the things to do near the Pompidou museum which I strongly recommend. Don’t miss the small authentic streets. Having lunch or dinner there can be a good way of avoiding the expensive restaurants of touristic places. There is also a Mariage frères tea shop in the Marais neighborhood, selling a brand of tea which I strongly recommend.
Buy ‘Mariage frères’ tea
Going to buy tea at the nearby Mariage Frères tea shop is also one of the things to do near the Pompidou museum. Founded in 1854, Mariage Frères is a famous high quality brand of tea in France. They sell all sorts of tea. The tea is of such a good quality that it is even served in luxury hotels such as the Ritz hotel in Paris, so of course, it is a bit expensive, but I really think it is worth it! It is as good as than any high quality tea you can find in England, if not better!
Catch a glimpse of the Town Hall
The Hôtel de Ville is the town hall of Paris. Going on the square in front of it to admire the nineteenth century neo-renaissance style facade is definitely one of the things to do near the Pompidou museum. Visiting the inside of the building is much more difficult. Only one visit per week is organized (two during the summer), and the number of spots per visit is of about only thirty persons, so reservation is really necessary if you want to have the chance of being part of the lucky few who get to see the inside!
Look at the old Saint James tower
One of the things to do near the Pompidou museum is seeing the Saint James Tower, which is the Tour Saint-Jacques in French. In a flamboyant Gothic style, this tower is all that remains of a sixteenth century church. There is a small park around the tower. The tower is sometimes open to visit, depending on the season and the days of the week. As this varies from year to year, the best if you want to climb to the top is to check on the internet whether it is open or not.
Spend an evening out at the ‘Théâtre du Châtelet’
Among the numerous things to do near the Pompidou museum, you could go to the Châtelet Theater. This theater actually features mostly concerts and musicals. It can be a very good way of spending an evening out.
Go shopping at the Forum des Halles
Going shopping is one of the things to do near the Pompidou museum. Go to the ‘Le Halles Forum’, one of the largest shopping galleries in Paris. It has all sorts of shops and you should find anything you want there.
