Messi joining Paris Saint-Germain, France’s most successful club, meant a change in dynamics. Mbappe was no longer ‘the guy’ there as the seven-time Ballon d’ or winner Lionel Messi was taking over the mantle.

Fans flocked to the Parc des Princes, the home of football club Paris Saint-Germain just to watch Messi play. It is fair enough though, he is the best football player to ever walk the earth and that’s that.

Who would have thought a 19-year-old could match Messi as one of the most hyped athletes in France?

Wembanyama is not only a basketball player, he is the best at what he does. There is so much buzz surrounding the young athlete and his hype has been compared to that LeBron James received during his draft year in 2003.

Wembanyama has amassed fans in the few years he has gotten the hype and it is projected that he will be the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA Draft set for June 22, 2023.

One might be wondering what’s so special about Wembanyama.

When someone is 7’4″ tall and has an approximate 8-foot wingspan, we don’t expect anything less. But what has distinguished him is his talent and general playing approach. Victor will find it easier to do some things other players can’t due to his alien-like height.

Despite his height, he has a quick first step and strong ball-handling abilities that enable him to outrun the defence and make his shot. He can shoot beyond the three-point line with ease and fluidity.

Due to his height and quickness, he is also an excellent rim protector and a force to be reckoned with in passing lanes when playing defence.

His prowess on the court has made fans travel across the world just to watch Wembanyama play. For those who don’t have the means never miss a Metropolitans 92 game thanks to Victor.

In a recent article by Joshua Robinson from Wall Street Journal, talking to a Metropolitans fan who expressed his comments on Metropolitans ticket sales, the fan said, “They sell out in 30 seconds, I set alarms to get on the site right away.”

His capability to pull a crowd was seen during the game where Metropolitans 92 faced Bourg-EN- Bresse at the Accor Arena on Sunday, May 7, 2023. While the Accor Arena rarely fills up to the brink of the 20,300 capacity it has, the frequent number of fans never gets past the 3,000 mark on the regular games.

May 7 was different though, about 15,000 people five times the usual crowd came to see Wemby play in what is considered to be his final games in the LNB Pro A before he set sail to the NBA.

The game ended 93-82 in the Metropolitans’ favour as the Wembanyama-led team easily defeated Bourg-EN- Bresse.
The French phenom finished the game with 25 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists to the delight of the 15,000 spectators.

Behold such an impressive feat and it is just the beginning of an illustrious career. Going to the NBA with such hype we expect even more crowds to fill up to have a glimpse of the 7’4” French prodigy.

If Wembanyama ends up at the Chicago Bulls, we might be able to see the biggest arena(United Center) fill up with more than 20,900 fans or more!

My thought is that wherever Victor winds up, he will have his fans following and as he progresses in his career growth the numbers will keep rising. He has done it in France, he will for sure do it in the USA.
