More and more people are flocking to Barcelona, as evidenced by the steadily rising airport numbers over the past six consecutive months.

These historical records have solidified the Catalan capital’s status as the ultimate tourist destination, thanks to its numerous attractions that continue to draw visitors, whether they are just passing through or officially visiting.

As reported by Catalan News, Aena, Spain’s airport management company, has released figures that reveal Barcelona welcomed more than 4.6 million passengers in April alone. Compared to the same month in 2023, this represents a steady 9.5% increase.

Taking all figures into consideration, 4,600,973 passengers travelled on commercial flights, with 3,411,915 passengers on international flights, marking an 11.8% increase compared to 2023 numbers, and 1,181,226 passengers on domestic flights, representing a 3.3% increase compared to the previous year.

The city’s infrastructure is being put to the test with this record number of travellers, marking six consecutive months of growth after March saw 4.2 million passengers pass through.

In terms of landings at Barcelona airport in March, the number stood at 29,812 take-offs and landings this 2024, a 10.8% increase from 2023.

From January to April 2024, the overall number of passengers has reached a staggering 16,041,099, which is a 13.2% increase compared to 2023 numbers.

It was also noted that, compared to the same month in 2023, there was an increase of 20.6% in freight carried in Barcelona, with 14,864 tonnes of freight transported in 2024.

In general, 2024 has seen a 20.8% increase in cargo being transported through Barcelona airport, standing at 58,557 tonnes compared to the number of tonnes of cargo transported through the airport at the same time in 2023.

Barcelona’s airports are an indicator of the Catalan capital’s year-round bustle, and even though it’s not yet mid-year, the numbers are astounding.

This goes to show the incredible allure the city holds for tourists, business people, travellers, or anyone on the move – they simply can’t resist the charm of Barcelona!
