The annual World Happiness Report has ranked the United Kingdom at position 20 on the list of the world’s happiest countries. For the seventh year in a row, Finland has topped the ranking, followed by Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and Israel.

The report, which has been published since 2002, uses statistical analysis to determine the world’s happiest countries. Researchers analyzed comprehensive Gallup polling data from 149 countries over the past three years, monitoring performance in six particular categories: gross domestic product per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make one’s own life choices, generosity of the general population, and perceptions of internal and external corruption levels.

People in these 149 countries and territories are asked to evaluate their life on a scale from zero to 10, with 10 representing their best possible life. The report by Gallup is then analyzed by a global team led by the University of Oxford.

The United Kingdom, which is made up of multiple nations, has most of its largest cities located in England. London, with its 8.1 million residents, is the largest city by population. The UK has a high literacy rate of over 99% among residents aged 15 and older, which is attributed to universal public education provided to UK residents, both in primary and secondary schools.

According to data from 2012, the total fertility rate of the United Kingdom is 1.92 children per woman. The number of children born to foreign-born mothers has increased to encompass over one-quarter of the total population. Statistics from 2014 show that the fertility of foreign-born women living in the UK is higher than native women of child-bearing age.

The rankings loosely correlate with a country’s prosperity, but other factors, including life expectancy, social bonds, personal freedom, and corruption levels, also appear to influence the position of the United Kingdom as 20th in the list of the world’s happiest countries.
