Over the past 30 years, this Nordic capital has undergone an incredible metamorphosis.

What was once a fading city has now blossomed into one of the most desirable places to live in the world. The numbers are staggering. Copenhagen’s population has grown by 13% since 2010, and the city is now home to 1.4 million people. But that’s not all—the number of visitors to Copenhagen has skyrocketed by a whopping 50% in less than a decade. In 2019, the city welcomed a record-breaking 12.7 million overnight stays!

So, what’s behind Copenhagen’s remarkable transformation? The answer lies in the city’s innovative approach to an age-old problem: waste management.

Back in the 1990s, Copenhagen had a big challenge on its hands. The city was producing high levels of waste per person, and something had to be done. That’s when the Circular Copenhagen initiative was born, with the ambitious goal of recycling 70% of the city’s waste by 2024.

The plan was simple but genius. Instead of just dumping trash, Copenhagen started incinerating it to generate electricity. This not only cleaned up the city but also boosted its energy security. Talk about killing two birds with one stone!

But Copenhagen didn’t stop there. The city has gone on to implement all kinds of cutting-edge waste sorting and collection systems, making it a breeze for residents to recycle and compost. And they’ve partnered with local businesses to find new ways to reuse and repurpose materials, from old furniture to biodegradable packaging.

“We realised that waste wasn’t a problem, but an opportunity,” explains Thomas Dalsgaard, Copenhagen’s Director of Waste Management. “By treating our trash as a resource, we’ve not only cleaned up the city but also created new jobs and revenue streams.”

One of the coolest examples of Copenhagen’s waste transformation is the Amager Bakke waste-to-energy plant. Designed by the renowned architect Bjarke Ingels, this cutting-edge facility converts household waste into heat and electricity for thousands of homes. But that’s not all – it even has a ski slope on the roof, turning trash into a fun public attraction!

Copenhagen’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t stop at waste. The city has also set its sights on becoming “the world’s most sustainable destination.” And with its growing population, booming tourism, and innovative green initiatives, it’s well on its way to achieving that goal. So, if you’re looking for inspiration on how to turn your city’s trash into treasure, look no further than Copenhagen. This Nordic capital has proven that with a little creativity and a lot of determination, even the most daunting waste problems can be transformed into opportunities for a greener, more prosperous future.
