Former Employees Sue Elon Musk and X Corp for Labor Violations

On May 16th, six ex-Twitter employees filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk and Twitter citing 14 counts of fraud, contract breaches, and labor law violations.

These counts include breach of contract, labour rights laws, fraud, and even building code violations. The former employees claim that they were regularly given explicit orders from Musk’s “transition team” to disobey both state and municipal laws.

This included making unsafe modifications to the company’s office space. According to the lawsuit, under Musk’s direction, X Corp. told staff to convert rooms in the San Francisco headquarters office into “hotel rooms.”

This was allegedly done while lying to inspectors and their landlord about the fact that these were only “temporary rest spaces” with the addition of some cozy furnishings and no other significant structural or substantive changes.

As per the lawsuit, one employee was instructed to place locks on the “hotel room” doors. However, the said locks did not meet a California code that “requires locks that automatically disengage when the building’s fire suppression systems are triggered.”

According to the employee, who later quit as the instructions given were illegal said the transition team repeatedly said that “compliant locks were too expensive”. They wanted employees to “immediately install cheaper locks that were not compliant with life safety and egress codes.”

This statement is likely to lead to an in-depth investigation into the company’s building code violation. As CNBC reports, a spokesperson from the Department of Building Inspection in San Francisco acknowledged the complaint was received.

He disclosed that the complaint of Twitter’s violations was received on Friday the 20th. However, no further action has been taken on the issue as of yet.

“We expect to reach out to building management soon. We are not speculating on future potential enforcement action,” they wrote to CNBC in an e-mail.

The lawsuit also discloses that Mr. Musk had plans to construct a bathroom next to his office at Twitter headquarters. His reasoning behind this is that he would avoid disturbing his bodyguards during late-night restroom trips.
