This does not mean being of dual nationalities but having two passports from the same country.
The United States State Department has a provision that allows travelers to apply for a duplicate passport. And for some frequent travelers, it has proven to be a good investment. Travelers who are constantly on the go can leave one passport at an embassy while waiting for a visa and take the other one on international trips.
It also makes it easy to get home if a primary passport is lost while away. However, it is recommended to report the first passport as lost or stolen.
If travelling to a more turbulent region, a second passport is highly likely to grant you access that would otherwise be denied. For example, if you’re travelling to a country that requires a visa, the request may be denied if customs see that the traveller has a visa from a rival company. Having a second passport saves you this trouble and gives you smooth sailing with customs.
However, it is important to note that a duplicate passport only lasts for four years. In the application process, there is also no guarantee that the request will be granted, as it is considered an exception to the State Department’s rule as opposed to a standard request.
The application process involves sending in a duplicate passport request letter detailing the reason why the applicant needs a second passport. The application also needs to have passport photos attached and the current passport, which if approved will be sent in with the current passport. After review, each duplicate is granted on a case-by-case basis.
