Not only is this a popular destination spot during the summer months when you can hit the beach, but the winter is a fun time to visit this lesser-known island when compared to Spain or Portugal.

Ta’ Fra Ben

Also known as Qawra Point, Ta’ Fra Ben beach is one of the most popular on the entire island. Although the surrounding area is rocky, this beach is good for explorers who want a little more of a hike to get to the water. We love how this bay offers shelter to the open sea, conducive to reaching a book and fending off crowds. If you are staying in the local area, like in St. Paul’s, this will become your favorite area to head to in the morning for a wake-up swim! 

Armier Bay

Located in Northern Malta, Armier Bay has two beaches for you to choose from! Since these beaches are so far out of the main center of the island, you can rest assured that you won’t be surrounded by tourists as you sunbathe on the beach or snorkel in the water. We recommend hiring a car and taking a day trip to this more remote part of the island to enjoy the seclusion and serenity. 

Gnejna Bay

Gnejna Bay on the Western coast of Malta is a secluded beach that is not overrun by tourists. Since it is so far away from the hubbub of city life, this shows how renting a car and taking your time to really explore the island is a fun way to discover hidden gems you wouldn’t find otherwise! We recommend staying for one or two nights in the village of Mgarr and heading to the beach in the morning – you can enjoy talking to the locals, lying on the sandy beach, and the easy accessibility from the nearby town. However, if you get here late during the day, you may find that parking is limited — so get here in the morning to make the most out of your day!

The Blue Lagoon

One of the most popular spots on the entire island, you will have to plan ahead to come here during the tourist season. Since people flock here all year round, and it gets really crowded during June, July, and August, head here early in the morning to get a parking spot and avoid the throngs of tourists. 

Located near Comino, the bright blue waters here look like something out of a fairytale. The best thing to do while here is to go snorkeling and scuba diving to check out the marine wildlife, rock formations, and get a different glimpse of the infamous Maltese caves. Take a full day trip here from one of the local towns to beat the crowds and hop in the azure water!

St. Peter’s Pool

If the Blue Lagoon is just too crowded for your lying, head to St. Peter’s Pool by Marsaxlokk. Located near a fisherman’s village that is frequented by locals, you can enjoy serenity and peacefulness while sunbathing here. Gaze out at the azure waters, rocky bay, and crystal clear waves as you prepare your snorkeling gear — there is no better place to view underwater creatures.

Imgiebah Bay is a small beach that is little known by tourists. We want to keep this place a hidden gem — so please, don’t tell anyone! This rocky and raw beach is great for those who want a natural experience. Instead of a manicured beach with sand, throngs of tourists, and easy access, this is a more adventurous spot for those who want seclusion, peace, and quiet. Scramble over some rocks and take the 15-minute walk from the nearby Selmun Palace to hop in the water.
