Celebrities come from a wide variety of backgrounds, just like everyone else in the world. While some celebrities are open about their experiences growing up under particular religious or cultural influences, others are usually more discreet about those specifics and that is understandable! For instance, in his memoir Yearbook, humorous author and actor Seth Rogen candidly discusses his relationship with Judaism. And some artists, such as Ilana Glazer from Broad City, put their Jewish upbringings front and center in their work. Religion doesn’t fit into everyone’s life the same way that most other things do.

1. Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul grew up in a family of devout Jews. She was born to a father of Syrian and a mother of Canadian ancestry. She may not have had enough time, though, to finish Hebrew school or have a bat mitzvah because of her desire to become a professional dancer and singer and her time as a Lakers Girl.

Despite this, Abdul is a devout Jew who has always yearned to visit Israel. At 51 years old, she eventually made it to Israel for a religious vacation in 2013 and even completed her bat mitzvah.

2. Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein is regarded as one of the most important physicists in the world. He was born in Wurttemberg, Germany, in 1879 to a German Jewish family. In addition to the Unified Field Theory, he is credited with developing the Quantum Theory and Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. As he gained notoriety around the world, Einstein developed a political outlook and spoke out against militarism and Zionism, which alienated many people in his native Germany.

3. Elizabeth Taylor

Oscar-winning British American actress Elizabeth Taylor was born on February 27, 1932. She converted to Judaism in 1959 after the passing of her third husband. Elizabeth Burton was ranked sixth on the list of female legends compiled by the American Film Institutes. Taylor visited Israel frequently during her life and participated in fund-raising efforts for the Jewish state during the Arab boycott of Israel in the 1970s.

4. Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow was raised in both Catholic and Jewish practices by her actress mother Blythe Danner and Jewish father Bruce Paltrow. She practices the Kabbalah, a branch of Jewish mysticism. Paltrow announced that she was becoming a Jew in 2014. She has won several honors, such as an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award.

5. Mark Rothko

On September 25, 1903, in Russia, the Jewish painter Mark Rothko was born. Many of his pieces lack vivid color since he frequently focused on fundamental feelings in his art. Even though he was well-liked by his contemporaries, his work was virtually unknown until 1960, when he was hired to create several murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in New York. He donated fourteen pieces of artwork to the “Rothko Chapel,” a Houston, Texas, church, in 1967. His art continues to be displayed in museums all around the United States.

Stan Lee, an American Jew who was a writer, editor, and publisher of comic books best known for his work on Marvel Comics, served as the company’s former president and chairman. Lee was the creator of the Marvel Universe, as it is known to fans. The National Medal of Arts was presented to Lee on November 17, 2008, and it was one of several honors for his work. Before his passing on November 12, 2018, he established The Stan Lee Foundation in 2010 to advance diversity and reading.

7. Stephen Sondheim

Born in New York City in 1930, Stephen Sondheim was a well-known vocalist. He received numerous honors for his singing, including eight Tony Awards, an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award. The Presidential Medal of Freedom was given to him in recognition of his profound influence.

8. Ilana Glazer

Ilana Glazer has been creating art about her Jewish identity for years and it has been greatly admired by fans of the hit sitcom Broad City, as you may already be aware if you have ever watched it. She is an American actress, writer, director, producer, and comedian. She received two nominations for the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.

This amazing actress holds dual citizenship in Israel and the United States and is also a producer and director. One of the most significant Jewish celebrities is without a doubt, Steven Spielberg. Spielberg, one of Hollywood’s top producers, is credited with incorporating Jewish cultural advocacy into the industry as a whole. Schindler’s List, which Spielberg produced in 1993 and went on to win seven Oscars. One of the first big-budget movies to discuss the horrific and inhumane atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust was this one.

Israel Isidore Beilin was the name given to Irving Berlin when he was born in Tyumen, Russia. 15. Ruth Bader Ginsburg

As the second woman and first Jewish woman to serve on the Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg made history when she took the oath of office. Between 1973 and 1976, she successfully defended six cases involving gender discrimination before the Supreme Court, winning five of them. She also co-founded the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).

16. Jerry Lewis

One of the most well-known actors and comedians of his era, Jerry Lewis went on to achieve success. He was born into a family of actors, and at the age of 16, he started his acting career. He started collaborating closely with vocalist Dean Martin when he was 20 years old, and by the late 1940s, they had both achieved national acclaim. By the time of his death, Jerry Lewis had received two Hollywood Walk of Fame stars, been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and been awarded the US Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service.

Alecia Beth Moore, better known by her stage name Pink, became well-known after Choice, an R&B female group, offered her a record deal. Pink was born with a talent for singing and creating. L. A. Reid, a musician, suggested that she go solo after hearing her perform with Choice. Her debut solo album, Can’t Take Me Home, became a huge success right away. Additionally, it received a platinum certification in the US. With hits like “Lady Marmalade,” which won her a Grammy, she quickly gained notoriety.

18. Lenny Kravitz

Lenny Kravitz, a Grammy-winning vocalist, was exposed to music from a young age. Kravitz’s mother and father, both of Jewish ancestry, were very supportive of his love of music, and he quickly mastered the guitar, bass, and drums. Romeo Blue was his stage name when he launched his career in 1985.

It wasn’t long before he started to make a name for himself, fusing pop, jazz, reggae, soul, R&B, and rock into his songs. He even established a record for the most consecutive triumphs in a single category by a male performer thanks to his many honors. Additionally, he has acted in several movies, such as “Precious” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”

19. Elie Wiesel

Eliezer “Elie” Wiesel, who was born on September 30th, 1928, was a Holocaust survivor, bestselling author, journalist, human rights advocate, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Wiesel and his family were transferred to an Auschwitz camp in June 1944.

His mother and sister died here, and he and his father were transferred to a labor camp. Wiesel’s father passed away from famine and tiredness after being relocated to another camp. In 1958, Wiesel wrote his debut book, Night, after being set free in 1945. The horrors of the Holocaust were portrayed in the book. Elie’s motto was “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness.” July 2016 saw his passing.

20. Gloria Steinem

In the latter half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century, Gloria Steinem was a renowned journalist, a militant feminist, and one of the most ardent figures in the women’s rights movement. Gloria was aware of her Jewish roots. Gloria had to publish her essays under a man’s identity when she first started her career. Women were expected to be seen, not heard, and were not allowed to be intelligent. Gloria later went on to co-found the first feminist publication that was read across the entire nation in 1971. She made a real effort to advance the feminist cause.

21. Billy Joel

A well-known pianist, singer, songwriter, and composer is William Martin Joel, better known by his stage name Billy Joel. Joel’s father was a German-born Jew who played the piano classically. Joel grudgingly began piano lessons at the age of four under the insistence of his parents, especially his mother. He had no idea that it would subsequently earn him the nickname “The Piano Man.”

With the band Echoes, subsequently better known as the Lost Souls, he began his musical career while he was a youngster. He looked into a solo career in 1970. Three years after the release of his second album, Piano Man, which was widely seen as a commercial failure, he found success. With the sale of more than 150 million albums, he has since become one of the most well-known music artists in history. Through the mix of love ballads, hard rock, jazz, pop, and soul in his music, Joel has developed a distinctive style.

22. Jonas Salk

A notable scientist of the 20th century was Jonas Salk. He became well-known for developing the polio vaccine. Dr. Salk completed an internship at Mount Sinai Hospital after receiving his M.D. from New York University in 1939. He subsequently obtained a fellowship at the University of Michigan, where he examined influenza viruses.

Millions of people died when polio spread during the 1940s. In 1947, Dr. Salk accepted a post at the University of Pittsburgh, where he started the polio research that would change the course of human history. In 1951, he created a polio vaccine, and four years later, in 1955, it was given the all-clear for usage. In ten years, the vaccination reduced polio cases by 90%.

23. Bette Midler

American singer-songwriter, actress, and businesswoman Bette Midler is a Grammy and Golden Globe Award winner. She didn’t have a lot of musical experience growing up in a Jewish home in Hawaii. Instead, she had majored in drama. The Divine Miss M, which later became her nickname, was the first album she released in 1972 after being noticed for her musical prowess.

Notably, Barry Manilow, a great vocalist, also contributed to co-producing the record. After then, Midler’s reputation increased even more as she put out great songs like “Wind Beneath My Wings,” “The Rose,” and “From a Distance.” She is one of the best-selling female vocalists of all time thanks to her 24 albums, which have sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.

24. Fran Lebowitz

The writer Lebowitz is renowned for her eponymous stylish look, New York sensibility, and biting social satire. New Jersey is where she was born and raised. Lebowitz is still a vital figure and a knowledgeable critic of all facets of American cultural life. Lebowitz portrayed Judge Janice Goldberg in the television series “Law & Order”.In addition, she has been included in two well-known documentaries, including “Public Speaking” (2010) and the most recent season of the Netflix docuseries “Pretend Its A City” (2021).

25. Gene Simmons

Israel-born Gene Simmons, who co-founded the hard rock band, Kiss, is the band’s lead singer. He later moved to the US with his family when he was eight years old. His parents were Jewish immigrants. He saw a performance by the Beatles, which sparked his interest in music. He started playing the guitar after his mother gave him his first one, hoping to one day be a well-known musician.

26. Bon Dylan

Bob Dylan, who was born Robert Allen Zimmerman, changed his name in college to better reflect his budding career as a folk and country music performer. With decades of experience using songs to express his ideas about important societal issues, Dylan is regarded as one of the 20th century’s most influential singer-songwriters.

Dylan played a vital role in the American folk and pop music revolutions of the 1960s. In addition, he wrote songs with lyrics that addressed social, political, and philosophical themes. He also performed in several musical genres, including blues, gospel, country, and rock & roll.

27. Ruth Handler

‘Adult’ dolls for kids were created by Ruth Handler, who was born in 1916. Her daughter was the inspiration for this. After observing her young daughter reject baby dolls in favor of playing with paper doll replicas of adult ladies, Handler came up with a better doll to make these games even more enjoyable.

Barbie was first displayed to the public at the annual toy exhibition in New York on March 9, 1959, by Handler and her firm, Mattel. The first mass-produced doll with adult-like features, Barbie stands eleven inches tall and is blonde. For decades, Barbie and the associated merchandise have enjoyed enormous popularity. One of the most popular toys worldwide is still sold today.

Being a Jewish actor, singer, director, writer, composer, producer, and author has earned Barbra Streisand the title of “Queen Of The Divas” and a plethora of awards. In nightclubs and on Broadway, she began her career as a singer in the 1960s. She was quickly discovered, not only for her musical prowess but also for her wit and humor.

In actuality, she has performed in several comedies in the past. She started her lengthy musical career in 1963 when she obtained a contract with Columbia Records. With 71.5 million records sold in the US alone and 140 million albums sold worldwide, she is regarded as one of the most commercially successful and best-selling female performers of all time.

29. Kobi Alexander

American businessman Jacob “Kobi” Alexander is of Israeli descent. He founded Comverse Technology in New York and served as its first CEO. He escaped to Namibia, a country without an extradition agreement with the US after being accused of many charges of fraud and other offenses relating to anomalies in the trading of Comverse shares in 2006.

30. Neil Diamond

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the legendary Neil Diamond, one of the most successful musicians on several music charts with over 18 platinum-certified albums. Because of the popularity of his distinctive quasi-gospel baritone voice among listeners of all ages, Diamond has sold well over 100 million recordings worldwide. Both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame have inducted him.

31. Manuel G. Batshaw

His most notable contribution to social work in Canada was the founding of the Batshaw Youth and Family Centers. He worked as a social worker in Quebec for more than 50 years. He actively supported Vietnamese boat people refugees in the 1970s. He oversaw an investigation into abuses at facilities housing problematic youth in 1975, and the Batshaw Committee produced a report that served as the foundation for legislation. In his honor, the Batshaw Youth and Family Centres were founded in 1993 after the merger of five anglophone institutions.

32. President Volodymyr Zelensky

In office as Ukraine’s sixth president since 2019, Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy (also spelled Zelensky or Zelenskiy) was born on 25th January 1978. He is a Ukrainian politician, former comedian, and actor.

Zelenskyy, a native Russian speaker who was born into a Ukrainian Jewish family, was raised in Kryvyi Rih, a significant city in the central Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He graduated with a law degree from the Kyiv National Economic University before beginning his acting career. Then he decided to pursue a career in humor and founded the production company Kvartal 95, which made films, animated series, and TV programs like Servant of the People, in which Zelenskyy portrayed a fictional Ukrainian president.

33. Andrew Garfield

Andrew Garfield, one of the most well-known Jewish actors in Hollywood, stands out for his extraordinary talent. His role as Peter Parker in the Amazing Spider-Man movie series made him a famous British-American actor. Although he has been in numerous major motion pictures both before and after his outstanding performance as Peter Parker, this is not the only noteworthy role in his career.

The most intriguing aspect of Garfield is that he still considers himself to be Jewish even if he describes himself as an agnostic pantheist. But in most interviews, the actor exclusively discusses his career and only infrequently touches on his personal life.

34. Alon Moni Abutboul

A successful Jewish actor in Hollywood is Alon Aboutboul. In 1979, he began his acting career, and he hasn’t looked back since. He has subsequently starred in a huge number of amazing films and television shows. In the 1986 Israeli film Shtei Etzbaot Mi’Tzidon (Two Fingers from Sidon), Alon had his first notable acting assignment. The 1982 Lebanon War is portrayed in the movie. He became one of the most outspoken and recognized Jewish actors in 2012 when he played Dr. Leonid Pavel in The Dark Knight Rises.

35. Daniel Radcliffe

Unquestionably, one of the top young Jewish men actors is Daniel Radcliffe. In 1999’s David Copperfield television movie, which aired on BBC One, he made his acting debut at the young age of 10. In The Tailor of Panama, he had a different role in 2001. However, he became well-known to the public as Harry Potter in the corresponding series. In 2001, the actor made his television debut in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. In the seven films that followed, Daniel kept playing Harry Potter.

The lead vocalist of the pop-rock band Maroon 5 is Adam Noah Levine. He was born and reared in the US and works as an actor, singer, and songwriter, although both of his parents were Jews. Levine became well-known for his collaborations with other musicians, including “Heard ‘Em Say” with Kanye West and “Say It Again” with Natasha Bedingfield. The singer-songwriter-instrumentalist won three Grammy Awards, eight Billboard Music Awards, and three American Music Awards as a member of the American pop-rock band, to name just a few accolades.

37. Dianna Agron

Dianna Elise is a singer and an actress. After performing in minor musical theater performances as a child, Agron made her cinematic debut in 2006. In 2007, she landed her first leading role as Debbie Marshall on the television series Heroes. On the Fox musical comedy-drama series Glee, she was cast as the villainous but sympathetic head cheerleader Quinn Fabray in 2009. She received several honors for her work on the show, including a SAG Award and a nomination for the Brit Award for Best International Breakthrough Act.

38. Lior Raz

Lior Raz is not only an actor but also a screenwriter. In 1993, Raz immigrated to the United States of America following his military service. He began working for the security firm Arnold Schwarzenegger hired as a bodyguard. The 2021 season of Netflix’s Hit & Run featured the actor in his most recent noteworthy performance. The actor co-created the series with Issacharof, Dawn Prestwich, and Nicole Yorkin, which is the most intriguing aspect.

39. Michael Isaacson

One of the pioneers of the Jewish camp song movement and a composer of music for Jewish synagogues is Michael Isaacson. His camp tunes, many of which were composed and debuted on the same day, helped to pioneer the camp music genre in the 1960s. Contemporary Jewish pop performers like Debbie Friedman and Craig Tubman have credited him as a major inspiration.

When Arthur Ira Garfunkel was just seven years old, he made his singing debut in the synagogue where his family was members in Queens, New York. The aspiring singer started singing with his rabbi every Saturday morning and later sang as a cantor at his bar mitzvah.

41. Adam Sandler

He is known for his film collaborations with his friends and fellow comedians. They formed a group named Happy Madison Productions that has led to the films Home Team, Just Go with It, The Out Laws, Grown Ups 1 and 2, The Wrong Missy, and Click. Adam Sandler has been nominated for three Grammy Awards, five Primetime Emmy Awards, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Golden Globe Award. His career began with stand-up comedy in clubs and universities. His career took off in the mid-1990s with the comedy film Billy Madison.

He is an entrepreneur and investor known for being one of the leading figures of the artificial intelligence boom. Sam dropped out of Standford University after two years and founded Loopt. It is a mobile social networking service. Sam is also a vocal advocate for the development of safe and beneficial artificial intelligence. He has been named one of the 1000 most influential people in the world. He was awarded Best Young Entrepreneur in Technology in 2008.

She is a critically acclaimed actress known for holding the title of the world’s highest-paid actress. She gained recognition for her films Girl with a Pearl Earring and Lost in Translation. Scarlet became famous for her role as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her roles in the films have grossed over $14.3 billion worldwide. She has gained two Academy Award nominations, five Golden Globe Award nominations, and a Tony Award nomination.

44. Gal Gadot

She is an actress, model and producer. She is known for her portrayal of Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe. Gal served two years in the Israel Defense Forces before pursuing a career in modeling and acting. Her first major Hollywood role was Gisele Yashar in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Gal’s performance as Wonder Woman has been widely praised and has become a popular symbol of female empowerment. It should be noted that Gal is a co-founder of the production company Pilot Wave. 

45. Ivanka Trump

She is the former executive vice president of development & acquisitions at the Trump Organization. Ivanka also has her own clothing, jewelry, and accessories line known as the Ivanka Trump Collection. From 2017 to 2021, Ivanka served as an unpaid Senior Advisor to the President of the Trump administration. She is involved in various philanthropic causes and organizations.

46. Lil Dicky

His real name is David Andrew Burd. He is a rapper, comedian, and actor. Lil Dicky used rapping as a creative way to present his monthly reports while working as an account manager. In 2013, his song Ex-Boyfriend gained over a million views on YouTube within 24 hours. Through the song, he was able to launch his music career and he has since released numerous hit songs such as Freaky Friday, and Earth. In 2019, he founded the non-profit organization The Good Deed Foundation which focuses on environmental issues.

She is known for being the co-founder of The Gefilteria. She started working with Joan Nathan in the Jewish food world. Liz cooks for pop-up events and gives lectures and hands-on classes. She has been featured in Forves’ 30 Under 30 list for food and wine. She was also in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal.

48. Roger Sherman

He is known for the documentaries Dont Divorce the Children, Medal of Honor, and Richard Rogers: The Sweetest Sounds. Roger has won an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, and two Academy Award nominations. He is a prominent figure in Major League Baseball and known for his success as a front-office executive. In 2002, he became the youngest General Manager in MLB history. In 2004 and 2007, Theo led the Red Sox to their first two World Series titles in 86 years. He served as a consultant for Major League Baseball. Theo is currently the Senior Advisor and part-owner of Fenway Sports Group. 

Theo has won a number of awards including Baseball America Major League Executive of the Year, Sporting News Executive of the Decade, and Sporting News Executive of the Year.

He has started in the films Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Paul i the founder of his own production company known as Iron Ocean Productions. It should be noted that Paul is a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He is a comedian, writer, actor, and producer known for his comedic roles and stoner humor. Seth’s career began as a stand-up comedian in Vancouver. He has received recognition for his co-writing in the comedy Superbad. Seth has been featured in films such as Knocked Up, Neighbors, Long Shot, Steve Jobs, and Take This Waltz

60. Jake Gyllenhaal
