15 Best Adam Sandler Movies

Adam Sandler is such a big household name in Hollywood, especially in the comedy department. Undeniably, he is one of the biggest comedic movie stars, and every movie he has starred in and even produced never fails to be much appreciated and even embraced worldwide. However, he has made some movies that were not so good. They were quite plainly put, very plain but that doesn’t detract his talent. He is quite good and there is a lot of quality to be found in the filmography and cinematography of Sandler. With that said, here are some of the best movies by Adam Sandler.

1. Airheads – 1994

Before becoming the true movie star we know today, Sandler was part of an ensemble comedy and in this particular movie, he did an amazing job. In this movie, Brendan Fraser is the lead and it is about a band of dimwitted guys who take hostages so that their music can be played. The drama and comedy surrounding these guys is what will keep you hooked to it because it is quite funny and fascinating. One of the people appearing in the movie,is Steve Buscemi, a frequent maker of cameos in so many of Sandler’s movies. So it seems like apart from being an amazing actor, he does right by his friends too.

2. Billy Madison – 1995

This was one of the first movies Sandler got an opportunity to star in. It is a very goofy and silly movie, but then again that is one of the strengths of it. His comedic persona in this movie is what made fans and different audiences all over to pause for a second and appreciate the young man who was clearly making moves and making people laugh genuinely.

3. Happy Gilmore -1996

Among all the silly movies of Sandler that you can think of, this one right here takes the cake. In ‘Happy Gilmore,’ Sandler is a failed hockey player who turns to golf and the movie has been appreciated as one of the best sports comedies to ever be made. Maybe even the only best sports comedy but that depends on whether or not these types of movies are your cup of tea. Christopher McDonald stars as the villainous shooter and the duo of him and Sandler in the comic story makes it all the more interesting.

4. The Wedding Singer– 1998

If you didn’t know it, Sandler can actually sing and this movie here proved to people how good he can be. He tends to make very raunchy and even nihilistic comedies which is why some people find his comedies cringe and even a source of secondhand embarrassment, but for some, those are his strengths actually. This movie actually was the first to drop Sandler into the world of romantic comedy. A lot of humour in the movie has been derived from 80s references but nevertheless, the movie is fun to watch and you can be sure you’ll get quite a laugh and nostalgia out of it.

5. The Waterboy – 1998

‘The Waterboy’ may be termed a silly movie and quite unwatchable even by many but one thing for sure is that the goofy side of Sandler is what makes it really fun. Starring as Bobby Boucher with that accent and mannerisms makes it a very funny movie. Being a college football comedy movie, you can be sure to get a few laughs out of it and even end up imitating some catchy phrases that you can’t just get out of your mind. Well, to be fair the accent is a little over the top but maybe that was deliberately done because it is funny all the same.

6. Mr. Deeds – 2002

This movie is a remake of a classic movie and it managed to do right by itself. It may however not be as funny as the prior ones we have talked about, but it is not cringe to make you roll your eyes. It is the kind of movie that will for sure keep you glued to the screens and the silly faces and accents Sandler makes once in a while makes it all the more worthwhile.

7. Punch-Drunk Love– 2002

So in this movie, The executive producer, Paul Thomas Anderson, decided to take Sandler’s comedy persona to try and test out how it would play out in this movie. As much as this movie is a romantic comedy or even a romantic drama, it is the first time you will see Sandler being very serious. His anger is actually scary and his emotional stuntedness and stoicness are disconcerting even. It was hence the first time Sandler kind of gave a very different face compared to his typical roles. Furthermore, Philip Seymour is in it and Anderson and Hoffman never failed in any movie project they ever worked together in.

8. Anger Management– 2003

As noted earlier, in ‘Punch-Drunk Love,’ this was the first time we got to see Sandler truly angry in his characters. It is therefore funny that in ‘Anger Management,’ it was followed by the attitude. What if that anger edge that was displayed the previous year in Punch-Drunk Love was taken much more serious. It is almost like in this movie they decided to make the rage come out again but this time to make it a little bit more funny. In this movie, that was captured very well and it continued to put Sandler on the map as one of the funniest actors out there.

9. 50 First Dates– 2004

In this 2004 movie, Sandler got to reunite with Drew Barrymore, his costar in the movie, ‘Wedding Singer.’ Clearly, the two have undeniable chemistry hence why producers decided to throw them in together again. Similarly, this movie is grounded in that chemistry and by the end of the movie, you want more of it. For sure there is a lot to be decided and what’s even more surprising, is the ending. It has a disturbing chemistry that is not so widely recognized for these kinds of movies. Arguably though, it is still one of Sandler’s best films and everyone seems to agree with that fact. Above everything else, it is funny mixed up with some serious emotions and hence gives you a rollercoaster of emotions by the time you are done with it.

10. The Longest Yard – 2005

This is another sports film that Sandler gets to be in and it is also very funny. I guess Sandler loves sports and this movie plays right to his interests. It is not like ‘Jokey,’ exactly, but as far as sports films are concerned, the movie doesn’t disappoint. It delivers for sure. Starring alongside popular icons like Nelly and Burt Reynolds, a good job was done in this movie all the same. It has always stood out as one of those movies that will give you a good laugh for sure and at the same time make you think deeply because it has some deep scenarios that make you think for sure.

11. You Don’t Mess With the Zohan– 2008

The beauty of this movie is that it had been in the works for years and finally, it got made even though it had a bit of cache behind it. It was written by Sandler himself, Robert Smigel (Saturday Night Live and Late Night legend) and Judd Apatow. Realistically speaking, this movie wasn’t embraced so much by people, and thus it wasn’t quite a hit as other Sandler movies. However, it doesn’t miss the point that it is quite funny too and the accent and wig that Sandler has will make you chuckle from beginning to end. So when all is said and done, it may not have been a very good success, but it is funny and interesting. It just depends on the kind of mood you have when watching it.

12. Hotel Transylvania – 2012

The famous Dracula phrase, ‘Blah, Blah, Blah,’ is something that Sandler nails very well. Given how Sandler loves using voices and accents in his performance, he is a more fitting choice for animating, and hence why Hotel Transylvania couldn’t miss the opportunity with him. More importantly, the Hotel Transylvania franchise movies are very fun to watch and even funny thanks to the dracula character. This simply means Sandler did an amazing job hence why audiences love this franchise so much.

13. The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)– 2017

In this movie, Sandler got back into his usual dramatic comedy realm and needless to say, he killed his role of ‘serious Sandler.’ It is not often that you will see Sandler being serious, but whenever he does, he surprisingly nails it and for a second you forget that he is the typical funny guy that no one can take seriously. Working alongside Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson, this is for sure a movie to watch and just effortlessly enjoy yourself while at it. Sandler does an amazing job and his serious face while uncommon, is still a breath of fresh air in as far as Sandler’s movies are concerned.

14. Murder Mystery- 2019

Working with Jennifer Aniston, they sure managed to make this movie quite interesting and funny. The better part of Sandler’s career has been making Netflix comedies and even though most of them are somehow lacking, ‘Murder Mystery’ has value to it and it really doesn’t disappoint at all. They managed to mash up comedy and mystery and the result was this iconic work that once watched, you get hooked on.

15. Uncut Gems– 2019

Produced by the legendary Safdie Brothers, this particular movie has been classified as a panic attack in film form because it quite honestly pulled so many surprises as far as Sandler is concerned. Sandler managed to give an award-winning performance as a diamond merchant to is also a hopeless and degenerate gambling addict. It has been rated as the most intense work Sandler ever did and so far, it will always be appreciated and mentioned as one of his most defining dramatic works.

Adam Sandler is funny and a very talented actor. His movies keep entertaining the viewers and it’s always a breath of fresh air to see him coming up with new projects every now and then.
