Ryanair, TUI, and Wizz Air Spearhead Budapest’s Summer Flight Expansion

With an expected 18% increase in traffic during the upcoming summer, Budapest Airport is preparing for a busy season. Budapest Airport is gearing up for a summer that could break records in 2024. This prediction stems from the initial data observed in the first two months of 2024.

Since the beginning of the year, Budapest Airport has seen a consistent influx of passengers, surpassing the one million mark monthly for nearly a year. This upward trend is anticipated to continue, particularly following a January that welcomed 1.1 million travelers, marking a 16.5% increase from the previous year.

The airport’s strong performance has encouraged its management to believe that this positive trend will carry into the summer season. The increase in passenger traffic to Budapest is linked to the increase of flight options to the city.

The summer flight schedule, starting March 31st, will introduce new airlines and destinations, expanding Budapest’s connectivity to 122 cities across 130 airports. This expansion is spearheaded by budget airlines Ryanair, TUI, and Wizz Air. New routes to London-Gatwick and Manchester, serving Danube cruise will be launched by TUI.

Ryanair on the other hand plans to add new routes from Budapest to various European cities, including Milan Malpensa, Tirana, Faro, Trieste, Frankfurt-Hahn, and Skiathos. Wizz Air is also set to increase the frequency of flights by establishing destinations such as Milan, Rome, Basel, Athens, Madrid, Malta, and Nice.

The major expansion in by the airlines reflects Budapest Airport’s dedication to offering a wide array of travel destinations. The expanded selection of airlines is anticipated to lower ticket prices and offer greater flexibility for travelers’ journeys to and from Budapest.

This strategic yet economic move by the airport is set to reinforce the city’s status as a central hub and aiding the Hungarian air freight sector’s growth. Statistics show that the passenger numbers this summer will surpass pre-pandemic figures.
