Mainland Portugal will experience higher than usual temperatures from Thursday through to at least Sunday. This is according to the Portugal’s Sea and Atmosphere Institute (IPMA). This above average temperatures will range between 25ºC and 27ºC across most of the country. It could even hit 30ºC in areas such as the Tagus Valley, some parts of the Douro Valley and Alto Alentejo.

Speaking to the Lusa news agency, IPMA meteorologist Maria João Frada highlighted that this is a result of a warm, tropical air mass replacing the cold air mass currently centered on the mainland. The weather service predicts temperatures over 10 degrees higher than usual, except for the Algarve region.

‘On Wednesday temperatures will rise a little more, in the region of 4ºC to 7ºC, except in the Algarve, and on Thursday they’ll rise again. Overall we’ll see rises in some places of around 15ºC,” she explained.

According to IPMA, this rise in temperature might continue until at least Sunday. Madeira is also set to witness hot weather due to the warm easterly current blowing from North Africa. Maria Frada also cautioned that these temperatures might rise significantly in the Madeira archipelago from today, reaching up to 30ºC, and that hot weather warnings may be issued.
