Half of the EPL Clubs Sack their Managers

This season’s Premier League has been a harsh and unforgiving course. Therefore, the season 2022/2023 seems dramatic at the management level as the English Football clubs strive for a good position.

In the course of the season, of the 20 EPL Team coaches who began the season with their clubs, 12 have already been forced out.

The managers have been relieved of their duties as the season progresses, with the club owners demanding results. Some were already coaches in the previous seasons, while others were new to the teams, but all were relieved of their duties.

The previous record was ten sackings, which took place in 2021/22, 2017/18, 2013/14, and 2008/09.

Ten of the 20 Premier League clubs have parted ways with their manager this season, while Chelsea and Southampton have done so twice.

A total of 12 Premier League managers have been sacked so far during the 2022/23 season.

This means the current campaign has broken the record for the most sackings in a single season in the competition’s history.

This is the list of the Casualties who have been sacked this season;

  1. Scott Parker & Thomas Tuchel

Parker became the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season, just days after Bournemouth was demolished 9-0 by Liverpool at Anfield.

Parker, who guided the Cherries to promotion last season and was replaced by Gary O’Neil, was also sacked by Club Brugge this term after just 12 games in charge. He was followed by Chelsea casting Thomas Tuchel out in early September, with the Blues firing the man that won them a UEFA Champions League Title just 15 months earlier.

  1. Bruno Lage & Steven Gerrard

Bruno was the next Manger out of the door after Wolves dropped into the bottom three with a limp 2-0 defeat at Westham on October 1, preceding Steven Gerrard suffering the axe a swift 75 minutes after a 3-0 loss to Fulham at Craven Cottage on October 20 that left Villa teetering above the relegation zone.

  1. Ralph Hasenhuttl

After steering the Saints through many difficult situations and games, Ralph saw his time at Southampton end following their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on November 6. Southampton had only won just two of their past 11 league matches and was sitting two points off the bottom of the table when Hasenhuttl’s departure was announced.

  1. Frank Lampard & Jesse Marsch

The ex-Chelsea, after being axed by the Blues saw him joined Everton. He followed suit on January 23, with Everton sitting 19th in the Premier League with just 15 points from 20 matches. The situation stayed the same as Everton remains in the relegation Zone with only ten matches remaining. This also saw Jesse Marsch sacked by Leeds after seven league games without a win. Leeds gave him a boot on February 6.

  1. Nathan Jones

Turbulent three-month reign in succession to Hasenhutti came Southampton’s 2-1 home defeat to 10-man Wolves. The former Luton Town boss oversaw eight losses in nine Premier League Games.

  1. Patrick Viera

Former Arsenal player and the Crystal Palace manager was not left behind through the streak of sacking. Crystal Palace gave Viera the boot on March 17, paying the price for the Eagles failing to win any of their 13 games in all competitions under him in 2023.

  1. Antonio Conte & Brendan Rodgers & Graham Potter

The great Conte was seen mercifully let go on March 26, with the International break, while Brendan Rodgers of Leicester City was axed just days later on April 2 after a defeat to Crystal Palace. Then just hours after Rodgers was sent packing, Chelsea sacked Graham Potter as well.

Since the start of the season, there has been at least one dismissal every month except December, during which Premier League action was paused for the World Cup.

Here’s the complete list of Premier League managers sacked in 2022/23…

Scott Parker, Bournemouth (30 August)

Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea (7 September)

Steven Gerrard, Aston Villa (20 October)

Could there be more sackings this season? As we enter into the crucial run-in period, other clubs will likely make a change at this late stage. But with nine clubs still fearing relegation, some managers could be in danger.

West Ham United and Nottingham Forest, the only two sides in the bottom half yet to change their manager, are rumored to have contemplated a change in recent months.
