Caution! Beach Warning Issued in Portugal

The National Maritime Authority (AMN) in Portugal has cautioned beachgoers to adopt safety measures at the beach.  The warning comes amid unusually warm weather in the region.

However, the AMN emphasized that sea conditions remain characteristic of winter, with strong currents and potential for rough seas. This creates a situation where beachgoers might be tempted to take a dip in seemingly inviting waters, unaware of the lurking risks.

The AMN stressed that the majority of Portuguese beaches are currently unsupervised by lifeguards. This increases the risk factors for swimmers in case of emergencies. Parents are advised to watch keenly over their children at the beach.

Risky situations cited by AMN include approaching water and turning one’s back to the sea without  maintaining a safe distance.  The warning further highlights the possibility of encountering strong rip currents, which can be dangerous for unsuspecting swimmers.

-Permanently supervise children and do not allow them to move away, keeping them close to an adult at all times;

– Avoid risky behaviors, not approaching the water or walking on wet sand;

– Do not turn your back to the sea and always offer a safe distance from the waterline, avoiding being surprised by a wave;

– If you witness a dangerous situation in the water, do not enter and call for help through 112.

 Finally, be aware of rip currents and how to identify them. If caught in a rip current, stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you escape the current’s pull.

By following these recommendations and exercising caution, beachgoers can still enjoy Portugal’s beautiful coastline while minimizing the risk of drowning.
