In order to keep him away from becoming a gang member, his parents, who had split up a while before, decide that he should live with his father in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he attended Aranui High School.

In 2017, Hema Taylor appeared in Auckland District Court on a charge relating to an assault incident that happened outside his family’s home last February. Earlier, he was charged with assault with intent to injure but later, the charges were amended to common assault given the circumstances of the incident.

The victim said to have been assaulted by Hema Taylor had been drinking and came outside their home and started making noise. His relative went to confront him and his friends to leave, but the situation escalated, that’s when he perceived a threat to his family, and he stepped in.

Hema Taylor later pleaded guilty to the assault and was charged with &2000 for kicking the victim in the head outside their compound. Judge Collins ordered him to pay $1,500 reparation to the victim and a $500 fine.
