Best things to do in Paris 9th district

Developed largely during the Belle Epoque and revolutionised by Haussmann, the 9th district of Paris has its own romantic vibe. From the gilded rooftops of the Palais Garnier to the luxurious department stores and charming covered passageways, there’s lots to see and do in Paris 9th district. In this article, I’ll give you my recommendations for the best things to do in Paris 9th district!

Explore the beautiful covered Passages 

One of the best things to do in Paris 9th district is to visit the covered passages. The 9th district is home to many ornate passageways featuring Belle Epoque architecture and ancient charm. Originally constructed to shelter the Parisian bourgeois from the rain during their shopping excursions, today these passages are still a great option in case of bad weather.

Perhaps the most famous of the Parisian passages is the Passage Jouffroy. Starting at 10-12 Boulevard Montmartre, this passage is lined with antique vendors, bookstores, and even gourmet food shops. Follow Passage Jouffroy until the end, then head into the Passage des Panoramas, the oldest passage in Paris! You’ll find more shops, excellent antique and vintage art and some of everything in between. An excellent option for spending a rainy day, or simply discovering a new part of the city, the covered passages are definitely one of the best things to do in Paris 9th district. 

Enjoy the view from the Grands Magasins

The two largest and most famous department stores in Paris, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps are known as the Grands Magasins. The selection and incredible interiors make these stores one of the best things to do in Paris 9th district. These luxurious stores offer an incredible selection of designer clothes, home decor and even a gourmet food court/grocery store.

What many people don’t know about these stores is that there’s a huge terrace on the roof of each, with an amazing view over Paris! The best part is, it’s free to access. There’s also a café on the roof, so you can enjoy a drink with a view. To access the rooftop, head to 35-40 Boulevard Haussmann (for Galeries Lafayette) or just next door to 64 Boulevard Haussmann (for Printemps) and take the escalators to the top floor. Nothing left to do but sit back and enjoy the gorgeous view!

Visit the Musée de la Vie Romantique

Next up on my list of the best things to do in Paris 9th district is to visit the “Romantic Life Museum”. This charming museum housed in ancient Parisian mansions is the hidden gem of Paris 9th district. A picturesque exterior showcases the romantic, Belle Epoque architecture typical of this neighbourhood. Inside, you’ll find some tributes to romantic literary George Sand as well as the mansions original owner, painter Ary Scheffer. Among the art collections are paintings, sculptures and furniture dating back to 19th century Paris.

Located at 16 Rue Chaptal, this museum is in the heart of Paris 9th district. There’s even an adorable teahouse and terrace where you can stop for a tea after your visit!

Marvel at the stunning Opera Garnier

My list of the best things to do in Paris 9th district wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the Opera Garnier. The opera house is an incredible work of architecture which hosts some of the most prestigious ballets and operas in the world! Featuring gorgeous, gilded Belle Epoque façades and an even more impressive interior, this place is a must-see. Whether you prefer to catch a show (book tickets in advance) or simply visit the magnificent premises, you will love the Opera Garnier.

Explore the artsy SoPi neighbourhood

Checking out this up and coming, arty neighbourhood is one of the best things to do in Paris 9th district. A trendy, London-esque abbreviation for South of Pigalle, SoPi was once Paris’ Red Light District, and still offers some of the original grungy vibes. Now one of the trendiest spots in the city, you’ll find no shortage of art galleries, street art and shopping. The streets of SoPi are also home to some of the coolest bars and best eats in the city! If you want the real SoPi experience, head to Bar Maison Souquet at 10 Rue de Bruxelles. Incredible cocktails and a great ambiance are a given at this brothel-turned-bar.

Don’t miss the Eglise de Trinité

An impressive sight, the Eglise de Trinité is a little-known 19th-century cathedral in the middle of the 9th district. This iconic cathedral was commissioned during Haussmann’s renovations, and its ornate architecture is characteristic of the neighbourhood. Calm and quiet, this cathedral and its garden is the perfect place to relax before some Montmartre sightseeing.

Walk the Rue des Martyrs

Just a couple blocks over from the Eglise de Trinité lies the famous Rue des Martyrs. Leading from the 9th district of Paris uphill to Montmartre. A street with a rather gruesome history, Rue des Martyrs got its name back in the 3rd century.  Legend has it that when Bishop Saint Denis was beheaded by the Roman Empire, he carried his head in his hands all the way up this street!

Nowadays, the Rue des Martyrs is a trendy street bustling with charming vendors, wonderful food stalls and a hipster Parisian vibe. Personally, I think this street is one of the best things to do in Paris 9th district, and I hope you’ll love it, too! Make sure to come hungry though, this street is the perfect spot to grab some delicious food before exploring Montmartre.
