Where to Eat Pancakes in Barcelona

Barcelona asked for brunch foods, and the cafes listened.

Whether you’re seeking Eggs Benedict, French toasts, acai bowls or just a stack of good old pancakes, this dream of a Spanish city has got you covered.

I found simply listing the best pancake joints in Barcelona to be largely unhelpful. There are many ways to prepare a pancake, and different dishes for different palettes. So I went ahead and divided them into a few major categories that emphasize the strongest characteristics in the pancakes at each place.

Say it with me: “Tendré los panqueques”…

Decadent Pancakes: Can Dendê in Barcelona

If you love a good brunch then you’ll be very comfortable at Can Dendê. All of the brunch foods I mentioned earlier are made here and are phenomenal. Dine here with more than one person if you can, and get a few different dishes to share.

They go the extra mile with all of their dishes. Instead of simply tossing fruit onto their stacks, they take time to create compotes and glazings that work differently for every flavor option.

The cakes are rich, fluffy and practically melt in your mouth. Reviews for Can Dendê’s pancakes include “world class” and “outstanding” — I must concur.

Can Dendê’s brunch menu includes a lot of gluten free options. Unfortunately the pancakes are not amongst the GF items.

Chocolate Pancakes: Granja Petitbo in Barcelona

Granja Petitbo is the only brunch spot in Barcelona that I would say gives Can Dendê a run for their money. In terms of service, quality and ambience the two are absolutely on par. Granja Petitbo takes a slight lead in that their menu is a touch cheaper.

They are situated in Barcelona’s center, a short walk from Gaudi’s Casa Milà.

Granja Petitbo take a chocolaty approach to their pancake dishes, and I am very happy about it. Whether you’re partial to dark, milk or white chocolate they have a dish just for you.

Their white chocolate and berry pancakes are one of the most popular items on the menu. You need a strong sweet tooth to enjoy these; alternatively they are great shared between two with additional savory meals alongside them.

Blueberry Pancakes: Picnic in Barcelona

Picnic is a really interesting little concept cafe close to where the free guided walking tours of Barcelona roam through.

The idea was for a modern brunch eatery but with a traditional tapas flair. So you’ll eat all your favorite brunch foods but in small plated portions, leaving room to taste more than one at a time.

Picnic does a range of flavors for their pancakes, but the blueberry are undoubtably the showstoppers. They’re so good that due to popular demand, Picnic added a full sized plate option to their menu so people wouldn’t have to share.

I would stick to the small plate and get a portion of their French toast as well. The two were made for each other.

Fruity Pancakes: Citizen Café in Barcelona

If I’m showing someone around Barcelona I like to start with a breakfast at Citizen Cafe followed by a morning walk through the Ciutadella Park just a few blocks down. It’s a warm introduction to the city, with great sights along the way.

My go-to pancake preference is fruit covered ones, so I eat at Citizen quite regularly. They top their stacks with the freshest berry selection and light powdered sugar. Those wanting to make the dish slightly more balanced can order a side of their crispy bacon; it pairs well with the sweetness.

Children love the pancakes at Citizen as well and the staff are great at including them in the space and ordering process. Ten stars for this cafe.

Gluten Free Pancakes: La Desayunería in Barcelona

La Desayuneria is Barcelona’s own rendition of an American diner. They do breakfast, brunch and lunch foods just like our friends in the west: fast & cheap.

You’ll pay just €4 for a stack of pancakes with toppings. For the outlying streets of el Raval, that’s next to nothing. On top of this, La Desayuneria makes the tastiest gluten free pancakes in all of Barcelona.

All food portions at La Desayuneria are overly generous; true to the American way. As with traditional diners, there is little to no consistency in food presentation, so don’t be put off if the first time you eat here your stack is upright; and the next time you eat here they’re spread around the plate instead!

METRO STATION: Sant Antoni

Vegan Pancakes: Brunch & Cake in Barcelona

Brunch and cake — what more do you want? Vegan options for both? Why not.

This cafe is an utter gem in the university town of Barcelona. It’s so good in fact, that you’ll need to mentally prepare for a thirty to forty minute wait upon arrival at the door. Everybody wants their helping of Bruch & Cake.

Their menu is inclusive of all diets, including vegans. Their vegan pancakes are truly outstanding; I’ve never seen anything plated like this in my life. You can’t tell if you’re looking at a stack of baked treats or a miniature enchanted forest. You’ll see what I mean.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION
OPENING HOURS: Monday TO SUNDAY –  8am to 9:30pm
ADDRESS: Carrer d’Enric Granados, 19, 08007 Barcelona, Spain
