This has been the case with great LGBTQ singers like Freddie Mercury, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Janelle Monae, to list a few, who have come out publicly as queer and have received full support from their fans all over the world. 1. Elton John  

Reginald Kenneth Dwight, popularly known as Sir Elton John, is a British singer and pianist who was born on 25th March 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. This music icon started singing at a young age and he even won a piano scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music at the age of 11.   

With more than 30 albums and 250 million records sold, Elton is one of the most celebrated and successful musical artists and entertainers in the world. He does a unique blend of pop, glam, and soft rock music. 

Sir Elton was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1995 for his charity work in funding HIV/AIDS programs. He married his husband, David Furnish, on 21st December 2014, after being in a civil partnership for 9 years.

Lady Gaga is known for her unique costumes. Some of her popular songs include ‘Just Dance’, ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Born This Way’.  

Being a bisexual woman, Gaga actively supports LGBT rights worldwide and she is considered a gay icon. She is passionate and expresses herself through her music. Gaga has sold about 170 million records over the years and has many awards including 13 Grammys and others. 

3. Freddie Mercury 

Farrokh Bulsara, popularly known as Freddie Mercury, was a British rock singer and songwriter who was the lead vocalist of the rock band Queen. He was born on 5th September 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar in Tanzania, East Africa.  

Freddie was born with four extra incisors, which he thought enhanced his vocal range. He did not like his dental formula, but he thought changing it would affect his voice. He was known for his flamboyant stage persona plus his four-octave-vocal range, as the lead vocalist of the rock band Queen.  

He was in a relationship with Jim Hutton, whom he referred to as his husband. Freddie, unfortunately, died of AIDS on 24th November 1991 in Kensington, London, England.  

4. Janis Joplin  

Janis Lyn Joplin was an American singer who was born on 19th January 1943 in Port Arthur, Texas. She started singing when she was in high school, and she has a singular voice. 

Janis was bisexual and one of the most popular rock stars with dazzling mezzo-soprano vocals and electric stage presence earning her the title, ‘queen of rock ‘n’ roll.’ She paved the way for countless women in rock and music.

Sam Frederick Smith is an English singer and songwriter who was born on 19th May 1992 in London, England. “Lay Me Down”, Stay with Me” and “Money on My Mind” are some of this singer’s most popular songs. Sam’s primary influences are Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Brandy Lynn Clark is an American country music singer and songwriter. She was born on 9th October 1975 in Morton, Washington. She began playing the guitar when she was nine years old and sang in school musicals.  

Clark is a lesbian and she is a great songwriter having written for many artists over the years. Her song ‘Follow Your Arrow’ won the Country Music Association song of the year award in 2014, plus she was nominated for Best New Artist in 2015 at the Grammy Awards.

He left the country music business in 2000 and returned in 2006 as a songwriter and producer. He wrote and produced ‘Follow Your Arrow’ alongside Kacey Musgraves, a song that supports the LGBTQ community.

Oliver Alexander Thornton, popular as Olly Alexander, is a British singer and actor who was born on 15th July 1990 in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. He is best known as the lead singer of Years & Years plus as an actor in many plays, films, and TV series. 

Olly is gay and an activist for the LGBTQ community. He has been open about his sexuality and used his platform to raise awareness about issues affecting the community, such as mental health, HIV/AIDS, and homophobia.

Sydney Loren Bennet best known as Syd is an American musician and singer who was born on 23rd April 1992 in Los Angeles, California. She comes from a musical family, and she started writing songs when she was young. She first gained attention on social media when she used Beyoncé’s song, ego, to promote body positivity and self-love. CHIKA also released a Pride-themed remix of Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You”.

Laith Ashley De La Cruz is an American transgender model, actor, activist, singer-songwriter, and entertainer of Dominican Descent. He started as a fitness model, before making his debut as a runway model during New York Fashion Week in 2016 then later went into music. He was born on 6th July 1989 in Harlem, New York, and he transitioned from female to male.

George was born on 25th June 1963 in East Finchley, Middlesex, England. His interest in music began at a young age and he began by working as a DJ, playing at clubs and local schools.

ShaGasyia (Shea) Diamond is an American singer, songwriter, and transgender rights activist. She was born on 17th March 1978 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Her mum was only fourteen years old when Shea was born and so the baby was raised by her relatives in Memphis, Tennessee. 

Shea ran away from home and spent most of her teenage and adulthood years in Flint, Michigan. When she was 20 years old, she robbed a convenience store at gunpoint to pay for gender affirmation surgery. Her music is mainly soul and R&B and her song “I Am Her” is a message of self-acceptance and resilience.  

Shea Diamond is an activist who advocates for the LGBTQ community and especially transgender rights.

Kim Petras is a German singer and songwriter who was born on 27th August 1992 in Cologne, Germany. Petras began singing when she was a teenager, and she makes electronic dance music (EDM), dance-pop, electropop, and bubblegum pop. Her songs are about love, heartbreak, and empowerment.  

This award-winning singer with two studio albums was one of the youngest people to undergo gender transition surgery. She is transgender and a vocal advocate for the LGBTQ community using her music to raise awareness for issues affecting the community. 

45. Mary Lambert 

Mary Danielle Lambert is an American singer, songwriter, and spoken word artist. She was born on 3rd May 1989 in Seattle, Washington but she grew up in Everett, still in Washington. She taught herself how to play piano and write songs at age 6. Her music is great, and she has released 2 albums so far. 

With her powerful vocals and her ability to write poems and songs about mental health, body positivity, and LGBTQ+ issues, Lambert is an activist who openly speaks out about these issues. She is also an author, and she released a book of poetry titled “500 Tips for Fat Girls” in 2013.
