10 Most famous Indian Presidents


 

India is a country of the Asian continent with a high population figure of about 1.48 billion people.

They were colonized by Britain and gained their independence on the 15th midnight of August 1947. This was also the partitioning day of initial India into the current one and Pakistan.

From this year, they have had several presidents who led differently. Some of the most famous presidents are as follows.

1. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan

Sarvepalli was a philosopher and a statesman, born on the 5th of September 1888 in Thuruttani, India.

He was the first vice president and the second president of India. He was married to Sivakamu Radhakrishnan.

He is famous for being a politician in the shadow who then made it to the highest office and placing the Indian philosophy on the world map.

His birthday is celebrated as teachers’ day as a tribute and honor of the services offered by teachers in society.

He was rewarded with the Bharat Ratna, the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, and an honorary member of the British Royal Order of Merit among other awards. He died on the 17th of April, 1975 in Chennai, India.

2. Ram Nath Kovind

Ram Nath was born on the 1st of October, 1945 in Paraunk, India. He is married to Savita Kovind since 1974.

He is serving as the 14th and the current president of India from the 25th of July, 2017. His political party is Bharatiya Janata Party. He stands as the first president of Utta Pradesh origin.

He served as the standing counsel for the central government in the Supreme Court of India for 13 years.

3. Rajendra Prasad

Rajendra Prasad was an independence activist, lawyer, and scholar. He was born on the 3rd of December, 1884 in Ziradei, India.

He joined the Indian National Congress during the independence movement and became the leader of the Bihar and Maharashtra regions.

Prasad was married to Rajvanshi Devi.

He was awarded the Bharat Ratna awards. He was the first president of India and the only president who served two consecutive terms, staying in office for around 12 years. He died on the 28th of February, 1963 in Patna, India.

4. Pranab Kumar Mukherjee

Pranab Mukherjee was the 13th president of India serving from 2012 to 2017. He was born on the 11th December 1935 in Mirity, India. His spouse was Suvra Mukherjee from 1957 to 2015.

Pranab was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress for five decades. He also occupied several ministerial portfolios of the government. He was rewarded the Bharat Ratna and Padma Vidma Vibhushan.

He was the first Bengali to hold the presidency post after being sworn in by the chief justice. He died on the 31st of August, 2020 in New Delhi, India.

5. Pratibha Devisingh Patil

Pratibha Patil was born on the 19th of December, 1934 in Nadgaon, India. She was married to Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat. She was the 12th president of India from 2007 to 2012, a lawyer, and a politician.

She is famous for being the only female President of India. She was awarded the Glamour Award for the Chose Ones.

6. Kocheril Raman Narayanan

Raman Narayanan was a politician, diplomat, statesman, and academician. He was born on the 4th of February, 1921 in Uzhavoor, India. He was the 9th vice president and the 10th president of India.

He was married to Usha Narayanan and he was of the Indian National Congress political party. He was the first person from the Dalit community to be the president.

Raman Narayanan was an independent and assertive President who helped enlarge the scope of India’s highest constitution office. He also set several precedents. He died on the 9th of November, 2005 in New Delhi, India.

7. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam

 Abdul Kalam was born on the 15th of October, 1931 in Rameswaram, India. He was an aerospace scientist by profession and a physics scholar.

He was the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007. He was never married and thus didn’t have children. He is recalled in India for his excellently played role in the development and operation of Indian missiles (AGNI and PRITHVI) and nuclear weapons programs.

He also developed a low coronary stent importation cost. Kalam died on the 27th of July, 2015 at 83 years of age.

8. Neelam Sanjivva Reddy

Reddy Neelam was born on the 19th of May, 1913 in Anantapuram, India. He served as the 6th president from 1977 to 1982 being the youngest president elected at the age of 64 years.

His election was a unique one for he was supported by every political party including the opposition leaders thus winning unopposed. He was also married to Neelam Nagaratnamma and they had only one child.

He died on the 1st of June, 1996 in Bengaluru, India.

9. Zakir Husain Khan

Zakir Khan was an economist and politician. He was born on the 8th of February, 1897 in Hyderabad, India.

He served as the third president of India for 2 years and had earlier served as the governor of Bihar and also the second vice-president. He was married to Shahjehan Begum.

Husain Khan was one of the receivers of the Bharat Ratna awards. He died on the 3rd of May, New Delhi in India. He was the first Indian president to die in office.

He and his wife, who died a few years later, are buried on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.

10. Shankar Dayal Sharma

Sharma Dayal was the 9th president of India who had earlier served as the 8th vice president under R. Venkataraman.

He was born on the 19th of August, 1918 in Bhopal, India. His political party was the Indian National Congress. Shankar Sharma was married to Vimala Sharma.

He was one time the youngest Chief Minister of the Bhopal state. He died on the 26th of December, 1999 in New Delhi, India.
