Costa Rica is a small country in Central America with a population of nearly five million. And which takes pride in the fact that it is a rapidly developing nation. San Jose is the capital and largest city with more than a quarter of the population living in it. ‘Pura Vida’ which means good life or pure life is the way of life in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica was under the colonial rule of the Spanish in the 16th century. Before this, Costa Rica a sparsely populated nation inhabited by the native aboriginals and they lacked a strong civilization. Here are the 15 Most Famous People from Costa Rica.

1. Harry Shum Jr.

Harry Shum Jr. is an actor, dancer, choreographer, and singer. He is best known for his work in films like Step Up 2: The Streets, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny, and Crazy Rich Asians. Also a popular TV actor, Harry’s award-winning portrayal of a bisexual person in Shadowhunters gained him a large fan following within the LGBT community.

2. Oscar Arias Sanchez

Nobel Prize-winning Costa Rican politician Oscar Arias Sanchez has been the president of his country twice and is known for his effective Central American peace plan. Born into an affluent coffee-farming family, Sanchez completed his PhD from the University of Essex and has more than 50 honorary doctorates.

3. Laura Chinchilla

The first female president of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, had worked as an NGO consultant in Africa and Latin America before stepping into politics. The National Liberation Party member has earned several honorary doctorates and now teaches public policy at Georgetown University.

Though an LGBT sympathizer, she opposes same-sex marriages. Laura is still one of the most powerful women in Latin America. She takes up social and environmental causes in Costa Rica.

Francisco Amighetti was a very famous painter of all times in Costa Rica. He was born in 1907 in San Jose to Italian origin parents. Other than drawing and painting, he uses to draw xylography.

One of the most interesting facts about Francisco was that he also a poet and published his collection of poems. He died in the year 1998 and till his death, he had created over 500 pieces of art. His artworks are the most valued today and displayed in museums worldwide.

5. Deborah Nowalski Kader

Deborah Nowalski Kader was born on 6th August 1980 in San Jose, Costa Rica. And she is better-known with her stage name Debi Nova. She is a singer-songwriter who has collaborated with many artists.

Deborah nominated for 2014 Latin Grammy Awards for the category of Best New Vocal Pop Album for her album SOY. She currently resides in Los Angeles, America.

6. Paulo Wanchope

Pablo César Wanchope Watson, more commonly known as Paulo Wanchope, is a Costa Rican former professional footballer. As of February 2009, Wanchope is the second most prolific goalscorer in the history of the Costa Rica national football team, behind Rolando Fonseca, with 45 goals in 73 international matches.

Franklin Ramón Chang Díaz, Ph.D. is a Costa Rican-American mechanical engineer, physicist and former NASA astronaut. Dr. Chang Díaz became an American citizen in 1997, holding a dual citizenship. He is of Chinese and Costa Rican descent. Dr. Chang Díaz is currently president and CEO of Ad Astra Rocket Company.

He is a veteran of seven Space Shuttle missions, making him the record holder as of 2008 for the most spaceflights. He was the third Latin American to go into space. Chang Díaz is the first naturalized US citizen to become an astronaut and he is a member of the NASA Astronaut Hall of Fame.

8. Andrey Amador

Andrey Amador Bikkazakova is a Costa Rican professional road bicycle racer for UCI ProTeam Movistar Team. His paternal grandmother is Spanish while his mother is a Russian immigrant who arrived in the country after meeting and marrying his Costa Rican father. He started cycling professionally at the age of 20 in 2006.

Amador was selected to carry the flag for Costa Rica at the 2011 Pan American Games opening ceremony. Amador’s biggest strength is climbing, but he is also a good descender. He is the first Costa Rican to ever ride the Tour de France.

In 2012, Amador won a mountainous stage 14 in the Giro d’Italia, where he ended up finishing 29th overall that year, respectively. In 2013, he finished 8th overall in the Tirreno-Adriatico.

9. Miguel Ángel Rodríguez

Miguel Ángel Rodríguez Echeverría is a Costa Rican economist, lawyer, businessman, and politician. He served as President of Costa Rica from 1998 to 2002 and was briefly Secretary General of the Organization of American States in 2004, before stepping down and returning to his country to face allegations of financial wrongdoing during his presidential tenure in Costa Rica.

On 27 April 2011 he was sentenced to 5 years in prison for corruption. In December 2012 he was exonerated by an appeals court.

José María Figueres Olsen, is a Costa Rican businessman, and politician. After he left the presidency of Costa Rica in 1998, Figueres has also been involved in global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and technology.

He started his career as an engineer working in agribusiness. After a decade, he entered public service as Minister of Foreign Trade and then Minister of Agriculture. In 1994, he was elected President of Costa Rica, as the nation’s youngest elected president of the 20th century.

In 2000, he joined the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, and later he worked with Concordia 21 in Madrid. Since 2010, he has been Chairman of the Carbon War Room, an independent non-profit organization focused on the global transition to a low carbon economy. On March 27, 2012, Sir Richard Branson announced that he was appointed as the new President of the Carbon War Room.

11. José María Castro Madriz

Lawyer, educator, diplomat, and politician José Mara Castro Madriz was from Costa Rica. He ruled over Costa Rica twice, from 1847 to 1849 and 1866 to 1868. Military coups prevented him from serving out his full term on both occasions. He publicly proclaimed Costa Rica an independent republic on August 31, 1848, during his first term in office, cutting Costa Rica’s links to the inactive Federal Republic of Central America.

Castro received his education at the University of León in Nicaragua, where he earned a bachelor of philosophy and a doctor of law. Castro was born in Jamaica. Before and after holding the post of President, he had a variety of official positions during his life. He served as the national University’s rector for sixteen years.

A highly well-known former Costa Rican football player, Paulo Wanchope was born on July 31, 1976, in Heredia, Costa Rica. He participated in the Qatar finals of the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1995 while playing for Costa Rica.

13. Nery Antonio Brenes Cardenas

Nery Brenes, who was born on September 25th, 1985, competed in the 400-meter sprint at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and advanced to the semifinals. He has taken part in many track and field competitions as a sprinter for Costa Rica. Brenes competed in a variety of competitions, including the 2012 IAAF World Indoor Championships and the 2007 World Athletics Championships in Osaka, Japan.

14. Juan Antonio Marín

Juan Antonio Marn is a retired male tennis player from Costa Rica who played professionally. As he had been living in Spain since he was 14, he initially performed on tour under the Spanish flag, but in March 1998, he switched to playing for Costa Rica. Marn attained his highest singles position in his career, No. 55 in the world, in October 1999.

Earlier that year, in the 1999 French Open, he came near to defeating Pete Sampras, the second-ranked player in the world, but the American ultimately prevailed 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4. Despite competing in 17 Grand Slam main-draw matches, he never emerged victorious.
