Nottingham Forest Thrash Arsenal and ‘Throws’ 2022/23 Title to Man City
The focus now remains on two crucial Finals after pocketing EPL Glory for the fifth time in six years. Treble-chasing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City crossed the finish line without the need for a sprint finish to win the Premier League title for the fifth time in six seasons.
Manchester City was getting ready to clinch the title against Chelsea at home on Sunday, but the Gunners let them celebrate early by playing poorly in Nottingham, giving them an unbridgeable four-point lead. With their survival guaranteed by Taiwo Awoniyi’s first-half goal, Forest will also play in the Premier League the next season thanks to the victory. In the 19th minute, Awoniyi gave Forest the lead after latching onto Morgan Gibbs-White’s through ball and beating Aaron Ramsdale as a result of Gabriel Magalhaes’ tackle after Martin Odegaard lost possession of the ball. Despite having 81% of the ball in the first half, Arsenal barely made a threat.
After Arsenal’s humbling loss to Nottingham Forest on Saturday night, which guaranteed them a spot in the Premier League for the upcoming season, City secured the championship. With just one game remaining, Mikel Arteta’s team is currently four points behind its competitors, making it difficult for them to catch Guardiola’s team.
Hopes of a close-fought title contest vanished weeks ago after City destroyed nearest rivals Arsenal at home. While many opponents withered in the closing stages of the most taxing of seasons, Guardiola’s squad climbed the gears and emerged as an unstoppable force, while Arsenal broke down. Since losing on the road to Tottenham in early February, City has destroyed practically everyone who has tried to stand in their way.
‘Tired’ Arsenal in the last minute
Although this may have been the death knell, Nottingham was not actually the winner. The three consecutive draws against Liverpool, West Ham, and Southampton, combined with City’s 4-1 drubbing, effectively ended Arsenal’s title hopes.
However, this game perfectly captured their issues over the previous few months. The undesirable traits were all present: ponderous possession, little cutting edge, and a lack of depth in critical areas.
Arsenal has struggled as City has advanced relentlessly, destroying all the teams in their path. The Arsenal team we witnessed for the first three-quarters of the season appears to have changed drastically. The fact that Forest sat deep with their five-man defense and appeared virtually impenetrable is a rather severe indictment for Arsenal.
Weak Arteta Tactical tweak
With his team sheet, Arteta sparked some questions, leading many supporters to believe Granit Xhaka would be lined up at left-back. But when the game began, it was evident that Jakub Kiwior had been given the job of replacing Oleksandr Zinchenko, leaving Tierney on the sidelines. White was moved to center back as Thomas Partey played right wing.
It was a complete failure. For Awoniyi’s first goal, Kiwior and Partey were nowhere to be found, and they made no forward contributions. At halftime on Sky Sports, former Arsenal defender Tony Adams did a good job of summarizing the situation.
He said that Ben White had been excellent with Saka on the right side before suddenly moving to insert Partey. Tierney is sitting on the bench for us. What tries Arteta? Do we desire Partey to play there the following year? Do we want Ben to be the center back? Is Kiwior a left-back? To be really honest with you, I don’t understand it, and they keep getting exposed. In the second half, Tierney was substituted for Kiwior, but it was too late.
Cooper Masterclass
Forest’s season has been up and down frequently, like a rollercoaster. However, they made up ground at the end of the season to avoid falling into the relegation trap. Their performance against Arsenal demonstrated how prepared and tough they had grown to be.
It is a remarkable accomplishment, and Cooper deserves a lot of praise for orchestrating it. The Forest manager has been put under absurd pressure to manage a ludicrous number of players and integrate them into a coherent team.
In April, Forest released a statement in support of Cooper, and the owner Evangelos Marinakis, who was present, was correct. While several of its competitors fired managers in an effort to ignite a comeback, Forest stood by theirs and was handsomely rewarded.
Although City may have the most valued squad in football, it ranks second among the top five leagues in Europe. a reminder that quality always wins out over quantity.
The FA Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley and the Champions League matchup against Inter Milan in Istanbul will take priority after a limited period of celebration, though.
