Samantha May Kerr OAM, Sam. This name is one that carries a lot of accomplishments and honors in the world of football, so when it is stated, it is not said in vain. Samantha May Kerr, an Australian professional soccer player, is a forward for Chelsea in the FA Women’s Super League. She also captains the Matildas, the women’s national team of Australia, since 2019. Kerr is regarded by many as one of the greatest forwards in women’s soccer history. 1. Kerr is the all-time leading Australian international scorer

In the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States as of 2023, Kerr is the all-time best scorer for Australia in international competition. The W-League (Australia/New Zealand) in 2017–18 and 2018–19, the NWSL (North America) in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and the FAWSL (Europe) in 2020–21 and 2021–22, are the three leagues she has won the Golden Boot in. She is the first female soccer player to have done so.

2. Kerr started her career at the age of 15 with Perth Glory

Before transferring to Sydney FC, Kerr began her career at the age of 15 with Perth Glory, where she played from 2008 until 2012. She joined the Western New York Flash in 2013 for the NWSL’s first season, and she helped the team win the NWSL Shield that year.

Later, she participated in the same league for the Chicago Red Stars and Sky Blue FC. After receiving numerous offers from teams like Olympique Lyonnais, Kerr decided to sign with Chelsea in 2019.

Since then, she has won eight trophies with the club, including consecutive Women’s Super League championships, and has assisted the team in making its first appearance in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final in 2021. Kerr first expressed her desire to play in Europe in 2019.

3.  She earned her first senior international cap in 2009 at the age of 15

At the age of 15, Kerr received her first senior international call-up in 2009. Since then, she has played for Australia at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2015 AFC Women’s Asian Cup, the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics, and the 2014, 2018, and 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup competitions. 

4. Sam has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her “services to football”

After Julie Dolan, the first Matildas captain, Kerr was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her “services to football” as part of the 2022 Australia Day Honours.

Kerr was named the 2018 Young Australian of the Year in the 2018 Australia Day Honours. She received the Julie Dolan Medal in 2017 and 2018 for being the best player in Australia, set a record by winning the PFA Australian Women’s Footballer of the Year award five times in a row in 2013, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022, and was recognized by the Football Media Association in 2013 and 2014 as the international player of the year.

5. She is the first and only Australian women’s footballer to be named in Ballon d’Or Féminin

Kerr received the FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year award in 2022 and 2023. She is one of just two players (the other being France international Wendie Renard) to have been nominated in every edition of the Ballon d’Or Féminin since its inception in 2018, placing 5th, 7th, third, and third respectively. She is the first and only female football player from Australia to be named to the shortlist for the award.

6. Top 10 of The Guardian’s 100 Best Female Footballers In The World from 2017 to 2022

She has continuously been in the top five for The Best FIFA Women’s Player since 2017, coming in at positions 10, 9, 11, 7, and 2, respectively.

In addition, Kerr was listed in The Guardian’s Top 10 of The 100 Best Female Footballers In The World from 2017 to 2022, placing third, second, first, sixth, third, and third, respectively. She was also nominated for the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award from 2018 to 2022.

7. Kerr’s parents were sportspeople

Her father, a professional Australian rules football player, was born in Calcutta to a featherweight boxing English father and a basketball-playing Indian mother.

Her mother also hails from a sporting family; her uncle Con Regan, father Harry, and another uncle, J. J. Miller, were all professional football players in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), and Galilee, who was ridden by Miller, won the Melbourne Cup in 1966.

8. Kerr has an endorsement deal with Nike

Nike has a sponsorship agreement with Kerr. She appeared in the commercial Dream Further in 2019 along with Gerard Piqué, Alex Scott, Neymar Jr., Crystal Dunn, and Lieke Martens, which ran during the Champions League Final and 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In the same year, Serena Williams, Megan Rapinoe, and Diana Taurasi, along with other female athletes, appeared in the Nike commercial Dream Crazier, which aired during the 91st Academy Awards. She represents the Powerade brand.

9. Kerr was crowned the world’s best women’s footballer in the FIFA 23 Women’s World Cup

It was revealed in July 2022 that Kerr will appear alongside Kylian Mbappé on the cover of the Ultimate edition of FIFA 23; this would mark the first time a female player would do so for the entire world. (Alex Morgan had already been featured on the FIFA 16 US cover.)

The FIFA 23 cover showing Kerr will be replaced by fresh artwork for the 2023 Women’s World Cup. In the FIFA 23 Women’s World Cup, Kerr shared the title of finest female footballer in the world with Alexia Putellas of Spain.

10. She is currently in a relationship with American soccer player Kristie Mewis

Kristie Mewis, an American soccer player, and Kerr are now dating. She formerly had a relationship with Nikki Stanton, a former colleague from Perth Glory and the Chicago Red Stars.

She and her brother Daniel Kerr are fans of the West Coast Eagles, and in 2019 and 2020, she was named the team’s top ticket holder.
