The I Amsterdam sign is found in Amsterdam city in Netherland. I am Amsterdam is the city and its residents’ collective catch Phrase.  The I Amsterdam sign was placed in Museumplein in 2014.

It was a project, a campaign created by Kesselkramer, a company in charge of Amsterdam publicity, communication, and representation of the city in the whole world.  The letters were a tourist attraction and placed in front of the Rijksmuseum. It was very popular as many pictures were taken there. The I Amsterdam sign is both a publicity sign and an identity sign. 

It started as a controversial move not supported by all the political parties in Amsterdam. It has been there until everything changed in 2019 when a motion-filled by one of the left parties of Amsterdam was approved. The sign was hence removed from there to avoid the crowding of tourists in Museumplein among other things.

1. Where to Find I AM AMSTERDAM.

Amsterdam letters can be found in front of the A’DAM lookout on the Overhoeksplein. You will find the place on the IJ in Amsterdam North. Here you can take a picture with the letters and also have a nice background of the water and the central station. At the moment there are two locations where you can locate Amsterdam; one is at Schiphol Airport. 

Once you get to Schiphol Airport you can take a snap, the second one is by the Sloterplas Lake in the west. However, it was designed as an outdoor free running and parkour track, so some of the letters are upright and others lie flat hence making it hard to get a perfect picture.

Amsterdam leader of the left-wing party GroenLinks, once said in a statement that “I Amsterdam message is that we are individuals in the city, and we want to show something different: diversity tolerance and solidarity” when there was a proposal to have words removed.

The power of these slogans continues to say that people who live there, work, study, visit, and those who come to Amsterdam seeking a better future are in the end the best evidence for why Amsterdam is you can be who you are a city of choice.

For many people the slogan functions as an identifying feature, a sign of quality, a mark of trustworthiness, independence, and connection. When in Amsterdam, Anyone who contributes anything to Amsterdam can feel part of it either permanently or temporarily

3. Why was the I AM AMSTERDAM Sign Removed?

These letters were later removed at the request of the city of Amsterdam as they were drawing a large crowd and the place had limited space. They were later taken to other places where you can still find them. They were thus placed at Schiphol airport and Sloterplas Lake in the west.

However much many people signed against the removal of the I Amsterdam signs, the petition was unsuccessful as the crane rolled in at around 8.30 Am on a Monday of the year 2019 and started removing the letters.

The best time to visit Amsterdam is between April and May or can also visit in September and November this is right before the summertime high tourist season. You will be highly contending with fewer tourists and also get lucky to enjoy mild temperatures.
