1. Oprah Winfrey

Famously known as the “Queen of All Media”, Oprah Gail Winfrey tops this list because of her popularity worldwide. She is a famous talk show host who is also a television producer, actress, author, and media proprietor. Oprah built her empire through her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show which ran for 25 years from 1986 to 2011.
Born into poverty in the rural area of Mississippi to a single mother who was a teenager, Oprah was later raised in inner-city Milwaukee. On one of her talk show episodes, she revealed that her childhood and early teenage years were tough as she was molested and got pregnant at 14. However, her son was born premature and died before moving to Nashville where she was raised by Vernon Winfrey.
Oprah landed a radio job while in high school and by 19, she co-anchored for the local evening news. She later launched her own production company after striving to build her brand. In the 20th century, Oprah Winfrey was known as the richest African American and also featured once as the world’s only black billionaire. She was also ranked as the most influential woman in the world by 2007.
2. Johnny Carson
After serving in the Navy during World War II, Johnny took another step in his career in radio and then to TV. In 1962, he became the host of the late-night talk show Tonight. His style as a talk show host was casual, taking a conversational approach, and extensively interacting with guests.
During his career time, Johnny Carson received multiple awards and accolades. He got six Primetime Emmy Awards, a 1985 Peabody Award, and the Television Academy’s 1980 Governor’s Award. In 1992, Johnny also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and also got the Kennedy Center Honor in 1993 after getting inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1987.
3. Ellen DeGeneres

Before building her career as a renowned talk show host, Ellen went through a sad childhood and teenage years. Her mother separated from her father and started living with her stepfather. At the age of 15/16, Ellen was molested by her stepfather but her mother never believed her. This could have later become worse as he wanted to sexually assault her, but she managed to escape.
However, these early life experiences did not hold her back as she built her wonderful career that has inspired many. In 1986 as she was building her career, Ellen DeGeneres made an appearance at the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Ellen also starred in the sitcom Ellen which ran from 1994 to 1998.
This earned her a Primetime Emmy Award. The popular Ellen DeGeneres Show which ran from 2003 to 2022 made Ellen be ranked among the famous talk show hosts. Through her show, she was able to get 33 Daytime Emmy Awards.
4. David Letterman
Letterman started his career in radio as an announcer and newsreader at the college’s 10-watt campus station, WBST, which is now a part of Indiana Public Radio. He was let go for disrespecting classical music. Later, he got involved in the creation of WAGO-AM 570 (now WCRD, 91.3), another school radio station.
Scouts for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson were drawn to Letterman’s brand of dry, biting humor, and he soon became a frequent visitor to the program. He won Carson’s favor and started appearing on the show as a frequent guest host in 1978. Carson is credited by Letterman as having had the most impact on his career.
David surpassed his friend and mentor Johnny Carson by being the longest-serving late-night talk show host for 33 years. He began his career on 1st February 1982 to 20th May 2015. David boasts of multiple awards and accolades in his career.
5. Jay Leno

James Douglas Muir Leno spent many years performing stand-up comedy before hosting NBC’s The Tonight Show from 1992 until 2009 when Conan O’Brien took over. The Jay Leno Show, Leno’s primetime talk show, debuted in September 2009 and aired weeknights at 10:00 p.m. ET on NBC. On 1st March 2010, Leno returned to hosting The Tonight Program after O’Brien declined NBC’s offer to have him host a half-hour monologue program before the show to increase ratings amid reports that viewership was declining.
On 6th February 2014, he hosted the final episode of his second stint. He was admitted to the Television Hall of Fame that year. Jay also hosted Jay Leno’s Garage from 2014 until 2022 and You Bet Your Life again starting in 2021.
6. Jimmy Fallon
Other than being a stand-up comedian, James Thomas Fallon is also a renowned talk show host, actor, writer, producer, and singer. He began his career as a stand-up comedian who was interested in this genre since he was a child.
From 2009 to 2014, Jimmy was the host of the late-night talk show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon which had a large audience. Following his departure from this show, he became the anchor of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. His personality and humor have always been appreciated by his fans across the globe.
7. Trevor Noah

Trevor Noah is a well-known talk show presenter and comedian. His most notable accomplishment is hosting The Daily Show on Comedy Central since September of that year. In South Africa, Noah began his career as an actor, presenter, and comedian.
Noah founded and hosted the M-Net and DStv program Tonight with Trevor Noah from 2010 to 2011. His stand-up comedy career was successful internationally, which led to television appearances in the United States and the United Kingdom. He has hosted the show since September 28, 2015, after being named as Jon Stewart’s replacement the following year.

The American talk show host Larry King, real name Lawrence Harvey Zeiger, is credited for making Larry King Live (1985–2010) one of CNN’s most long-running and well-liked shows. Growing up in Brooklyn, Larry King had to endure a gruesome childhood and teenage life as he had to support his widowed mother. He followed his dream to become a famous talk show host.
In addition to hosting Larry King Live on CNN, a growing network at the time, King also aired the well-known national radio talk show The Larry King Show from 1978 until 1994. The show was the first live phone-in program on television to have a global audience.
It became well-known for King’s spontaneous interviewing techniques in which he took delight in performing little background study on his guests, as well as for being a popular forum for political candidates. Notably, Ross Perot declared his candidature for president on the program in 1992. Piers Morgan took over from him after his retirement.

Pier lost his father at 11 months and took the surname of his stepfather. His career began at the tabloid, The Sun in 1988. By 1994 at the age of 29, Pier Morgan was appointed editor of the News of the World making him the youngest editor.
He is also a successful and famous talk show host over the years. Pier has shown the ITV talk show known as Piers Morgan’s Life Stories which aired from 2009 to 2020 and the CNN talk show Piers Morgan Live which broadcasted from 2011 to 2014.
In 2008, Morgan won The Celebrity Apprentice US, where he co-starred with Donald Trump, the eventual US president. He has been a TalkTV host on the show Piers Morgan Uncensored since 2022.
13. Conan O’Brien

Conan Christopher O’Brien was born to a well-off family with his mother being a lawyer and his mother practicing medicine. His interest in comedy and entertainment began when he was a child when he joined Harvard University to study American history and literature. He took part in several important works in the film industry including the writing of the cartoon series, The Simpsons.
O’Brien was hired by NBC to take over the vacated time slot in 1993 after David Letterman relocated his late-night talk show to CBS. When Late Night with Conan O’Brien made its debut in September 1993, the media panned it heavily. O’Brien’s inexperience and uncertainty in his new role were evident on camera, and he was inexorably compared to Letterman.
However, the criticism gradually went away as he started gaining a huge following and liking. Conan is best known as host of Late Night with Conan O’Brien (1993–2009), The Tonight Show (2009–10), and Conan (2010–21).
14. Wendy Williams
As Wendy Joan Williams grew, doctors advised her parents that she take medication as a child to manage her hyperactivity. She had a negative view of herself because of the diet her parents made her follow after she put on weight in elementary school. Her parents anticipated that she would work as a nurse, however, she followed a different path to become a renowned talk show host.
She started her career as a radio DJ who became popular in New York as a shock jockette. Wendy Williams later moved to television where she created her brand and a huge following. She began hosting the nationally syndicated television talk show The Wendy Williams Show from 2008 to 2022.
15. Barbara Walters

Born on 25 September 1929, Barbara Jill Walters was a renowned broadcast journalist and television personality. She began her career as a writer but later developed into one of the world’s famous talk show hosts.
Walters was renowned for her in-depth conversations with foreign and top leaders. She relentlessly pursued elusive news people, securing exclusive interviews for her well-liked Barbara Walters Specials, which debuted in 1976. Many subjects were drawn into frequently fascinating and occasionally uncomfortable moments of self-revelation by her disarmingly straightforward probing.
In her 1970 book, How to Talk with Practically Anyone About Practically Anything, Walters detailed how to conduct productive interviews. She won Emmy Awards for Best Interviewer in 1982 and 1983. In 1990, she was inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame.
16. Regis Philbin
Regis Francis Xavier Philbin was a popular American television personality, talk show host, game show host, comedian, actor, and musician. His career on the screens did not begin immediately as he had to join the army before he became a renowned talk show host. He was once referred to as “the hardest working man in show business” and, after overtaking Hugh Downs, he held the Guinness World Record for the most hours spent on American television.

Gerald Norman Springer was born in London to German-Jewish refugee parents who were escaping the Holocaust. He was born in London before his family immigrated to the US when he was 5 years old. In the US, he was raised in Queens, New York City.
Jerry studied hard, became a lawyer, and joined politics where he was involved in the campaigns for Robert Kennedy. Other than being deeply involved in politics, Jerry is also remembered as a famous talk show host. He hosted the controversial Jerry Springer talk show from 1991 to 2018 and many others.

Retired American journalist, newsreader, and talk-show host Maurice Richard Povich popularly known as Maury Povich was born in Washington, D.C., on January 17, 1939. He is most known for his television tabloid program Maury, sometimes known as The Maury Povich Show, which aired from 1991 to 2022. In the past, he had anchored newscasts in various American cities.

Born on 1st September 1950, Phillip Calvin McGraw who is famously known as Dr. Phil is a TV personality and author. He is best known for being the host of the talk show Dr. Phil.
In the late 1990s, McGraw gained more fame by making appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show. In September 2002, McGraw’s program, Dr. Phil, was introduced with Oprah Winfrey’s assistance. The program is set up as an advisory program.
20. Arsenio Hall
American actor, comedian, and producer Arsenio Hall has acted in several films and television programs, but he is best known for hosting a well-liked late-night talk show. He made history by becoming the first African American to host his late-night talk program. His career began in acting films which many people knew him through.
In 1989, Hall made a comeback to television as the host of his syndicated talk program, The Arsenio Hall Program (1989-94). Hall mastered the “Woof! Woof! Woof!” fist pump for the program, which had a carefree party vibe and focused on hip-hop guests and sharp (but risqué) interviews. Hall did away with the standard talk-show setup, in which the host sat behind a desk, and opted to sit next to his guests instead making him more popular.

Born Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, Jon Stewart is a renowned comedian, writer, director, and top talk show host. He is best known for hosting the satiric program, The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015. His show was loved by many but he decided to take a break away from the screens and live a private life.
22. Stephen Colbert
Stephen Tyrone Colbert famously known as Stephen Colbert is an actor and comedian best known for hosting The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (from 2015 to date) and The Colbert Report (2005–14), two mock news programs. Before working on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, which was hosted by Jon Stewart, in 1997, Colbert worked on several different television ventures.
Colbert created the term truthiness as a form of constant “truth” that comes from a gut instinct rather than any facts during his first show. He was the host of the late-night talk show The Late Show with James Corden, which aired on CBS from 2015 to 2023 and is most recognized in the US for that role. When O’Donnell’s mother passed away, she was ten years old, and she utilized humor to cope. She became popular throughout her youth thanks to her sense of humor, and while in high school, she was chosen as homecoming queen, senior class president, and prom queen.
Following a string of on-screen appearances that made her more widely known across the country, O’Donnell presented her own syndicated daytime talk show, The Rosie O’Donnell Show, from 1996 to 2002. Graham William Walker, better known by his stage name Graham Norton, was born in Ireland on 4th April 1963. He is an actor, comedian, author, and television personality most recognized for his work in the UK. He has won eight awards in total, including five BAFTA TV Awards for his comic chat show The Graham Norton Show (2007–present).
For So Graham Norton (2000–2002), he won the British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance three times. His talk show replaced Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in BBC One’s famous late-Friday-evening slot in 2010, having previously aired on BBC Two before shifting to other timeslots on BBC One.

Popularly known as Dick Cavett, Richard Alva Cavett is an American television personality and former talk show presenter. He made frequent national broadcast television appearances in the United States from the 1960s to the 2000s. When Cavett made an appearance as a guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in January 2020, Colbert declared that he was a tremendous fan of Cavett and had watched all of his talk programs. After starting his career in music, comedy, and theatre in the UK, Craig Ferguson had a major turnaround in his later career. He went on to become a top talk show host and actor in several films and a writer.
In 2009, his interview with South African archbishop Desmond Tutu earned him a Peabody Award for his work as host of the CBS late-night discussion show The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (2005–2014). He also served as the host of the History Channel’s Join or Die with Craig Ferguson (2016) and the syndicated game show Celebrity Name Game (2014–2017), for which he received two Daytime Emmy Awards.
28. Chelsea Handler
Handler, the youngest of six children, was raised in New Jersey. She participated in the Miss New Jersey pageant as a teenager, but she didn’t pursue acting until she was 19 when she moved to Los Angeles to launch a career. She eventually shifted her attention to stand-up comedy and started doing it in venues all around the city.
Following appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and the E! Network, Handler was granted her show, The Chelsea Handler Show, on the network. The 12-episode series, which alternated comic skits and portions of Handler’s live stand-up performance, aired between April and September 2006.
The following year, E! Debuted Chelsea Lately. This program featured Handler’s stand-up as well as a recurring roundtable discussion with special guests who were other comedians. It stood apart from other late-night shows in that it actively courted mediocre celebrities while simultaneously drawing A-listers.
29. Ricky Gervais

Gervais started in the music business. In the 1980s, he tried his hand at being a pop star as the lead singer of the new-wave band Seona Dancing. He also managed the up-and-coming band Suede before switching to comedy. However, he later became a renowned screen media personality and a famous talk show host.
30. Bill Maher
Maher’s career gained momentum when he co-hosted Indecision ’92 for the cable network Comedy Central, a program that offered irreverent coverage of the presidential election. Due to his popularity and fame, his talk show, Politically Incorrect made its debut in 1993.
Maher’s ability to playfully manage the talks between a rotating panel of journalists, celebrities, and politicians contributed to Politically Incorrect’s instant success, at least in part. Since it was so well-liked, the show was transferred from Comedy Central to the ABC network in 1997.
