20 Most Famous Tech Company Logos

Logos are one of the most important aspects of a company (an underrated one at that). When done well and expertly, a company’s logo will embody said company’s identity. When done wrong, well ridicule ensues!

Some of the best and most famous logos are from one of the biggest industry: the tech industry. From Apple’s iconic apple to Google’s colorful letters, these logos have become synonymous with the companies they represent.

This article will explore the history and significance of some of the most famous tech company logos, and how they have contributed to the success and recognition of these companies.

1. Apple

Apple logo on a window by Bangyu Wang on Unsplash

Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne founded  Apple in 1976. Some of its popular products include the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch.

The iconic logo of Apple features an apple with a bite taken out of it.  It is one of the most recognizable logos in the world. So how did it come to be?

Incredibly, the iconic logo was not Apple’s first try.  The original one was a picture of Isaac Newton under a tree depicting the alleged scene when he discovered the laws of gravity. You know, when an apple fell on his head?

It also included a quote  written on the logo’s frame from poet William Wordsworth; “Newton… a mind forever voyaging through strange seas of thought.”

However, this logo which was designed by  Ronald Wayne proved too large and old-fashioned. Jobs therefore tasked Rob Janoff with designing a new and simpler logo.

By 1977, Janoff had designed the logo that has become synonymous with this tech giant. Janoff’s logo was a “rainbow-striped” apple with a bite taken out of it. The logo has been altered severally over the years (by changing its color) but the shape has remained the same.

When asked about his process during design, Janoff replied: “It was very simple really. I just bought a bunch of apples, put them in a bowl, and drew them for a week or so to simplify the shape.” He also said the bit is important as it prevents people from mistaking the apple for a cherry or another fruit.

2. Google

Google’s logo by Mitchell Luo on Unsplash

Google is everybody’s (at least almost everybody’s) favorite search engine. In a day the company logs over 8 billion searches. The company also has other ventures other than the search engine meaning it’s very hard for one not to interact with their logo at least once a day.

Google’s logo simply reads “Google” in multicolor. How did this iconic, recognizable, and misleadingly simple logo come to be?

Before being known as Google, the company was known as BackRub. Back then, the logo was an image of the back of a hand with the name BackRub printed on it in Red font. Yes, this logo in retrospect was a bit “creepy”.

After rebranding in 1998, the company changed its logo to a multicolored image reading “Google!” The exclamation was included following Yahoo’s logo which had an exclamation.

The logo has remained the same over the years but the exclamation was removed in 1999. Google also introduced Google doodle where they temporarily modify the logo over a short period of time in honor of an event or icon.

3. Microsoft

Microsoft’s logo by Turag Photography on Unsplash

Yet another legendary entry in this list. The Microsoft logo is iconic not only visually but audibly as well. Some claim they can hear it perhaps because of the WindowsXP startup sound.

In 1975, William Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft. The company is famous for producing products like Windows, and Xbox. The Microsoft logo features the company’s name in grey in a neat sans-serif font with a colorful square pane with a red, green, blue, and yellow square. This is the 5th iteration or version of the logo since it was first introduced in 1975.

The first version was Microsoft written in 2 words (Micro & Soft) stacked one above the other. This is because back then the name was hyphenated. The Os in both words were aligned and every letter was written in 5 layers of concentric lines.

Welcome to the 80s! The Heavy Metal era when legendary bands such as AC/DC peaked. Microsoft followed this trend and changed its logo to an edgy version both literally and figuratively. From 1980 to 1982, the logo was a single word with sharp fonts similar to those adopted by famous bands at the time.

The heavy metal logo was not popular despite being ‘trendy’.  In 1982, the logo was changed to a more ‘sober’ and imaginative one. The logo was the word Microsoft written in simple letters and font. The ‘O’ was a bit busy being interpreted as a steering wheel or rising sun. The ‘O’ even got a name! It is known as The Blibbet.

1987 saw the introduction of ‘The Pacman Logo’. This log is the word Microsoft with the ‘O’ carved. Designed by Scott Baker, the Logo lasted until 2012.

Microsoft debuted the new and current corporate logo on August 23, 2012, at the inauguration of its 23rd Microsoft shop in Boston. The introduction of the square has made Microsoft more recognized compared to its predecessors.

In addition, there are four squares in the new design that bear the colors of the previous Windows logo and stand in for Microsoft’s four main products: Windows (blue), Office (red), Xbox (green), and Bing (yellow).

4. Facebook

Facebook, currently under Meta Platforms was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. Today it might not be the go-to social platform, but a few years back it was the biggest application in existence.

The Facebook logo is a white letter “f” on a blue background. The design is simple and clean. So how did the logo come to be?

Mark Zuckerberg has a condition called deuteranopia. Deuteranopia is a type of color blindness that makes it challenging to identify apart colors. An individual with deuteranopia, however, can readily distinguish the color blue.

This is why the background used in the logo is blue. Despite massive changes in Facebook, the logo has generally remained the same over the years.

Amazon has had 4 logos so far in its history. The first, used until 1997, was on a blue river-like background with a trapezoid that formed an “A”.

In 1997, the first redesign was released it was the URL (amazon.com) with the words “Earth’s Biggest Bookstore” underneath. The next one was similar but in all caps and the ‘O’ in Amazon was large and golden. It did not last long!

In 1998, a more familiar one was released. It was similar to the current one but with a yellow curve below the URL in place of the smile shape. The current version was adopted in 2000 and has remained in place and unchanged since.
