100 Most Popular Songs from the 90s

The 90s were the bomb when it comes to pop culture. Sure, the 80s were pretty impressive, to be honest, but then the 90s brought about a modern wave that hadn’t been seen before. The fashion sense, the makeup and the music had taken a whole new style.

The 90s is when we had the likes of Aaliyah, Tupac, biggie and so many other big artists. The 90s are actually the mother of Rnbs and hard core hip hop. I would say this is the era that typically shaped what we know as pop culture today. So what are the most popular songs from this era? Let’s check them out, shall we?

1. Waterfalls- TLC (1994)

I’m pretty sure you know the song. Especially if you’re an 80s kid and this song would constantly bang through your stereo radio. Released in 1994, the song was written and performed by TLC, a very popular girl group in the 90s that blew the music industry at the time. Its powerful lyrics,“Don’t go chasing waterfalls please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to. I know that you’re gonna have it your way or nothing at all but I think you’re moving too fast” makes total sense even in today’s scenario. And you always know how powerful and impactful a song is, if 20 years down the line it still has the power to get to you.

2. Torn- Natalie Imbruglia (1997)

Torn really blew the charts back in ’97 and when you listen to that song, you will understand why. Performed by Natalie Imbruglia (although she’s not the original composer of the song), Torn talks about the emotional turmoil that comes after a heartbreak. The alternative rock version of this song did so well that it topped the charts for weeks at the time of its performance. The solo guitar towards the end of that song always manages to make me smile and stand up and just dance. Regardless of it being a heartbreak song. That’s how catchy and good it is.

3. Man! I feel like a woman- Shania Twain (1999)

Shania Twain killed this one to be honest. I think this is where Ciara got her idea of rocking a suit and a fedora hat while singing ‘like a boy.’ The dance moves, the lyrics were just meant t impress every woman and girl who would get the opportunity to listen to this song. Released in 1999, it was the perfect song and vybe to end and wrap up the 90s.

4. Quit playing games- Backstreet boys (1996)

Oh man! This brings back so much memories. I remember listening to this song and jamming to it pretending the mop was the microphone. Would sing my heart out as if I truly understood what “playing games with my heart’ really meant. Backstreet boys did well with this one and I can’t blame every girl that would scream and shout their name whenever they were in the vicinity. I mean, just check out this song. They really managed to turn a heartbreak song into a sexy song. What with them looking all handsome and just really sexy. Oh! What a heartthrob they were (still are). Good times people. Good times!

5. My name is- Eminem (1999)

Although it was a funny song coz Eminem was literally saying what his name was and of course, talking about his journey, this song topped the charts for quite some time. Nobody knew that this was just a tip of the iceberg for Eminem’s career. 20 plus years later, this guy is still making hits and every time he never disappoints. Pretty impressive, huh?!

6. Kiss from a Rose- Seal (1995)

The signature beginning of this song, the “parara parara..” is iconic and for a long time I didn’t even know the song was called ‘kiss from a rose.’ Would just refer to it as parapam and leave it at that. Released in 1995 and topping the charts for weeks thereafter, this song will never grow old. Just listen to the acapella version of it and you will think you’re in heaven. That’s how good it is to be honest. It is a very cute love song so make sure to listen to it and get into your feelings at least.

7. I’ll make love to you- Boys II Men (1994)

In all honesty, I have never heard of a sexual song that is quite poetic and to put it plainly, cute. Boys to men killed this one by romanticizing the whole dating scene and what romance should be really all about. The song is still relevant to date and every valentine’s you will hear it being played everywhere. Pretty annoying especially if you are single, but it doesn’t change the fact that it is indeed a beautigul song.

8. Rush, Rush- Paula Abdul (1991)

This is one of my best 90s song hands-down. Not only because Keanu Reeves is in the music video looking all handsome and yummy but because Paula managed to sing so well and bring out the emotions of it. Its very catchy chorus, “rush, rush, hurry hurry love and come to me…” always plays in my mind whenever I listen to the song. Believe me, when you listen to it you’re gonna undertand what I’m saying. It’s a very beautiful song and its melody is also quite beautiful.

9. Ready or not – Fugees (1996)

I remember quite well how my teacher in primary school would always sing this song on his way to punish us. Its vybe is a mixture of pop and rnb and that is what makes it so unique. Fugees was quite talented and so it doesn’t come as a surprise that this song became a huge success. It was used in movies and topped the charts for several weeks after its release.

10. Ironic- Alanis Morrissete (1996)

This alternative soft rock song will never cease to blow my mind. Ironic was so successful given how it skyrocketed her music career and always remained in the charts for years. Years! Imagine that. This song was used in so many movies thus showing  how well it performed. It is quite a lovely song and the guitar and drums combo in the chorus will just have you bobbing your head to the rhythm and even paly air guitar and drums. It is that good. Ironic is absolutely a gem.

11. Iris- GooGoo Dolls (1998)

Iris is honestly my top favourite song. Everytime I listen to this song I can’t help but get into my feelings and imagine all kinds of sceanrios in my head. The melody, the arrangemengenet, the performance of this song is jut superb. I mean, I personally became a Goo goo dolls fan after listening to this song. Ironically, Goo Goo Dolls didn’t even think the song would blow up as they speciafically wrote that song for the movie, ‘sleepless in Seattle.’ Goes to show I can’t be the only one this song impressed.

12. Saturday Night – Whigfield (1993)

This song always proves to me that we are not the only ones who know what life of the party really means. It is quite a catchy song and I remember my dad telling me how it was the anthem of every disco bar you would go to (well, they used to call them discos and not clubs. So if you ever come across a person still calling clubs discos, just know they’re old school LOL). Anyway, Whigfield performed the hell out of this person and did an amazing job with it. Every time you are getting ready for a Saturday night out, make sure this is your background song. It will totally syk you up and just give you a good vybe. Trust me on that one.

13. Frozen- Madonna (1998)

Madonna never cease to amaze me with her talent. Frozen most definitely blew the charts and it was a beautifully well done song. This is the kind of song that has the ability to make you catch feelings, at the same time dance to it and at the same time be you lullaby. That’s how dynamic it is. Released in 1998, it is a well known song to date and everytime you listen to it, it’s like listening to the song for the forst time.

14. Crazy- Aerosmith (1994)

Aerosmith was a very unique rock band group. All their songs are actually quite good and in my book, they will remain the most iconic rock band I have ever had the opportunity of listening to. Crazy is such a beautiful and cute song, talking about young love and excitement that usually accompanies it.

15. I don’t wanna miss a thing- Aerosmith (1998)

This is another Aerosmith song that I absolutely love. After Iris by Goo Goo Dolls, this song never ceases to blow my mind. I remember hearing it for the first time after watching the movie, ‘Armageddon’ and immediately after that, I was all over the internet looking for the song. I finally found it and there was no looking back. I was sold. The music arrangement, the feelings this song evokes is all you could ever ask for. In all honesty, this song is just a masterpiece! I may go on and on talking about it as if I’m the promoter but this right here is it!

16. The boy is mine- Brandy and Monica (1998)

Brandy and Monica managed to bring out a new phenomenon in the rnb world. That is, writing a song in the form of a conversation and story telling. It wasn’t so common before and by this song blowing up, a lot of musicians have copied this style. What I love about this song is how captivating and well written it is. Thw whole you are glued and invested trying to listen to it and get the gist of what is happening between this two women romantically interested in the same guy. The melody is also quite good so you won’t get bored while listening to it. You can count on that.

17. Genie in a bottle- Christina Aguilera (1999)

Every time I am asked how old I am, I usually just sing this song and people manage to get the picture. Genie in a bottle is a masterpiece. I mean, If you do not know any other song by Aguilera, then at least this song made you know who she is. The beats and arrangement of the song are amazing! Let’s not even argue on that one. Listen to the song, and you’ll find yourself dancing to it while reminiscing on the good old days.

18. I have nothing- Whitney Houston (1993)

As a musician myself, it was always a dream of mine to meet and even do a song with Whitney Houston. A little bit stretched I know, but hey! Let a girl dream. That’s how much I respect and look up to Whitney as a musical icon. With this song, she just managed to prove to the whole world how good and unbeatable she is with her vocals. The song is about a vulnerable woman begging her lover not to break her heart because she would be nohing without him. Pretty deep. But when you listen to the song, you forget all about and just focus on how beautifully sang it was. I mean, Whitney killed it! She left no crumbs with this song. But then again it is Whitney. She never left any crumbs with any song she ever did.

19. You are not alone- Michael Jackson (1995)

Of course, Micheal Jackson had to appear in this list. He was an iconic singer and in my book no one even comes closer to his vocal strength as a male. This song topped the charts for several years and when you listen to the song, you can’t help but also hear the raw genuity in it. Anytime I’m down, I usually put this song on repeat and the constant “you are not alone, I am here with you” phrase always lifts my spirits. I mean, what’s not to love about M.J. His every song ended up being a gem.

20. Truly, Madly, Deeply- Savage Garden (1997)

Whooo! I feel like screaming. Savage Garden was always (still is) my to to go group, especially with sappy romantic songs. This song is a masterpiece in iots own right. Released in 1997, it still is quite a catch, 20 plus years later. These boys had the ability of making the simplest things sound so romantic and cute. I neve thought, “I wanna bathe with you in the sea” could sound so sexy until I heard that phrase in this song. There’s just something about it. I don’t even have enough words to describe it. Just go listen to the song. I promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

21. I believe I can fly- R. Kelly (1996)

Well, I sure hope by the time this song was being released and encouraged quite a number of us, R. Kelly wasn’t busy preaching water and drinking wine. The song nonetheless is quite a good one, melodious even and the choir harmony gives it a very heavenly touch. It managed to not only entertain listeners but also give them a bit of an encouragement while at it.

22. When you believe- Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston (1998)

So in 1998, these two great musical icons came together and produced the best masterpiece you could ever have an opportunity to listen. When you believe is such a powerful song and the beauty of it is that it neve grows old. Every time I hear some of its words, “There can be miracles, when you believe…,” I always feel like I can conquer the whole world. I mean, when a song is able to deeply touch its listeners, that’s when you know as a singer that you did a great job.

23. As long as you love me- Backstreet boys (1997)

Here we are yet again with a backstreet boys song. Can’t blame me though. This song was simply put amazing! You can easily jam to it and it has this power of making any woman extremely beautiful. I mean, when a bunch of good looking men keep on saying, “I don’t care, who you are, where you from, don’t care what you do as long as you love me,” which sane girl won’t swoon over these words? Back street boys never disappointed and for the 80 and 90s kids, they made our adolescent great!

24. I swear – All-4-One- (1994)

The first time I heard this song from a collection of tapes my dad had, I felt like I would cry. Don’t know why because it is a very beautiful love song. Could be the melody and instrument arrangement just tagged at my soul and I couldn’t help it. Released in 1994, this is one of the most well written bitter sweet song I could never get enough of. These 4 young men did a pretty good job given how their vocal arrangement also was so on point. Truth be told, I will never ever grow weary of this song.

25. The Rhythm of the night- Corona (1994)

This is a typical disco song that really the 90s fun. Okay, in the 90s I was still so I never got an opportunity to see the disco scene but based on the stories I hear from my cool aunties, this was it! It was one of the disco anthem songs among many others. It is honestly a catchy song, especially its chorus. Give it a chance. It’s gonna blow your mind for sure. Additionally, Corona made braids look pretty cool. In an ear where inclusivity of black women was such a struggle, she sure represented us well.

26. The Sign- ace of base (1993)

If ever there was a song that made ‘starting over’ look really cool, this was it. Its catchy beats will make you dance to it and forget about really thinking what the song is trying to say.

27. End of the road- Boys II Men (1992)

Of course our list cannot be complete without this song. End of the road by Boys II Men is simply a  beautiful song. It is phenomenal in the way it was written and performed not to mention the emotions and feelings that were put to it. The beauty of this song is that it is a typical love song that can fit anywhere. Be it at a wedding, in your house doing chores, while taking a shower and pretending you’re at a concert. Wherever. This song is just amazing to be honest. It was even voted best RnB of all time and we really can’t refute that. It deserves such a recognition.

The moment this song begins, with the very sentimental and catchy guitar solo, I guarantee you, tears will definitely well up in your eyes. Then as it continues and hear the powerful lyrics, you will be wailing and sobbing by the time it comes to an end. What I really love about this song is how 2pac gave his everything into this song. Furthermore, his ability to tell stories via a song was one of his strong suits and this song wasn’t an exception. He executed it quite well and 20-plus years down the line after its release, its message never ceases to just blow your mind.

30. Hero- Mariah Carey (1993)

This is one the most performed songs by Mariah Carey and it really performed well that it remained in the charts for quite some time after its release. He had quite a mouthful name I know but thanks to Israel, Hawaiian music was indefinitely put on the world’s map (in terms of music). I love how with this song, he managed to produce such a sweet and beautiful melody using only his ukulele. Also, the guy didn’t give a shit about ‘acceptable body image,’ (coz let’s face it, body images in the 90s was very unrealistic and phony). As an overweight guy, he embraced himself and is even seen shirtless in this song’s music video. Gotta love the guy. Anyway, Somewhere over the rainbow did so well and there are countless of covers that have been done. Every time we listen to the covers, we remember Israel a little bit more. What better way to leave a legacy, huh?!

They later came to an agreement and Rick was given some of the profits the song made because afterall, he was the original creator. If you want to know the success of a song, check out if still after 20 years, the song is still banging in people’s ears. This song released in 1998, is an example of such. I actually heard on Tik Tok and I was amazed. Of course those who don’t know think it was released just the other day but it has actually been around. It’s older than most Generation Z folks. Anyway, this song right here managed to bring a new edge to the music industry and kind of introduced the house and EDM music genre.

Apart from the signature pixie hairstyle Roxette rocked and proving to women worldwide that they can actually look good in it, this song is honestly legendary. 70. Gangsta’s Paradise- Coolio & I.v (1995)

The song is still very popular today and Coolio and I.v did a good job with this one. They managed to mash up hip hop and pop genre and produced something quite truthfully, amazing. What better way to let you that your song indeed left a mark if 20 years down the line people still jam to it.

71. Everything I do (I do it for you)- Bryan Adams (1991)

73. Macarena- Los Del Rio (1995)

Come on! If there is no other song you know of as a 90s kid, this should be it. I remember as kids we didn’t even understand what the song really meant but all of us would sing along and just say ‘Macarena’ over and over again. Good times Anyway, this song also did good and topped the billboard charts for quite a while.

74. I want it that way- Backstreet Boys (1999)

These young men sure never disappointed their fans. With this particular jam, they just proved to the world how good they really are at what they do. In the rock and roll world, this song sure left a mark. I mean, it is still very much alive to date and there are so many renditions that have been done to try and honour the song. Released in 1994, Zombie topped the bill board charts for a quite a while, as it well deserves.

77. Baby one more time- Britney Spears (1998)

To be honest Britney did well with this one. I didn’t even know she could dance so well until this song. The music video was done so well and it keeps you glued to it all through. As one of my favourites also, I will always recommend this song when you’re just in the mood to be nostalgic and bring back the 90s vibe into your life.

78. Smells like teen spirit- Nirvana (1991)

Another rock and roll song that impressed people all across the world. Just like many other Nirvana songs, this song also topped the bill charts for a while and was quite appreciated by many.

Every girl during this era had this song as one of their favourites. It was such (and still is) a phenomenal song. Wannabe is such a good vibe song and when singing along, you can’t help but adopt a bit of an attitude as you are addressing your imaginary boyfriend

80. My Heart Will go on- Celine Dion (1997)

Thanks to Titanic, this song exploded. I’m pretty sure they didn’t think it would at such a wide magnitude, but it really did. 81. I will Always Love You- Whitney Houston (1992)

With this song, Whitney proved to the world that she is unmatched vocal-wise. She really gave her everything with this song and didn’t disappoint at all. It was also used as a theme song for her very successful movie in 1992, “the bodyguard.” Just goes to show how talented and gifted she really was.

82. Be my lover- La Bouche (1995)

A typical retro disco song, this song left a mark as it was such a vibe and was danceable. Released in 1995, La Bouche did well in this song as it also managed to top the billboard charts for quite a while. If nothing else, I love how it makes your worries go away whenever you dance to it.

83. Under The Bridge- Red Hot Chili Pepper (1992)

This soft rock and Roll song also managed to take the 90s by storm and honestly when you listen to it, you’re gonna understand why. Released in 1992, the song still has such a vibe and it always manages to bring about a sweet kind of nostalgia.

84. The Power- Snap! (1990)

I think this is where ‘black girl magic’ phenomena came from. Snap was something else with her talent. With this song, she managed to show how much power women (especially black women) have. Her representation in the song truly helped change the narrative and navigate it towards the inclusivity of the black woman. Quite phenomenal to be honest.

85. Runaway Train – Soul Asylum (1993)

Released in 1993, this soft rock song also did well in its own capacity. It topped the charts for a while and brought about a new touch to the typical rock and roll music genre that was popular at the time. It’s also unique angle to use music to raise awareness to the rising number of runaway youths in America at the time was quite unique.

Another Spice Girls song that did quite well. Although to be totally honest, Spice Girls never ever disappointed. This song is no exception. 88. Boom Boom Boom- Vengaboys (1999)

Another typical retro type of music that really ‘disturbed’ the industry at the time. Same genre as pretty fly, these type of songs were more of disco bangers and that’s what people really loved about them. They were danceable and fun. Not really addressing a particular kind of issue or putting you into your feelings.

89. All star- Smashmouth (1999)

As a rock genre type of song, the song did quite well given how also at the time there were so many rock bands coming up and thus the competition wasn’t a joke. Released in 1999, all star did well for itself and even went ahead to top the billboard charts for quite some time.

Who knew that this sibling duo could come together and produce such a masterpiece? I did! Anyway, released in 1995, this song was quite phenomenal especially given the fact that it was done by two of the hottest and talented musicians of the time and who were siblings. Made it even more commendable and unique.

93. Scatman- Scatman John (1994)

This was more of a vibe and dancing song. Its chorus especially didn’t have much coherent wording which is why it was loved by many. Ironic I know. But with dancing songs, you do not really need heavy lyrics. As long as the beats are fire, you’re good to go. And with this song, they nailed it!

94. Streets of Philadelphia- Bruce Springsteen (1994)

More of a slow ballad kind of song, this song will sure bring you to your feelings. That’s its beauty though. Released in 1994, the song did well for itself and made slow songs seem cool and beautiful.

95. Scar Tissue- Red Hot Chili Peppers (1999)

With its slow rhythm, the song was honestly produced very beautifully. Its lyrics also are very deep and well-written and they shed light on how these young men were talented. Released in 1999, the song never disappointed even for a day.

96. Jump, Jump- Kris Kross (1992)

This is where the idea of making hip-hop more fun and having more of a dancing vibe came from. When you listen to this song, you can’t help but bob your head up and down to the rhythm of its beats. It was well done and produced that’s for sure.

97. Enjoy the Silence- Depeche Mode (1990)

This is another soft rock song that did really well in the early 90s. Written and produced very beautifully, it is no wonder it has never been forgotten. It is still well known and 80s babies especially (those who know a little something about music) will always be found singing along to it.

98. Thunderstruck- AC/DC (1990)

What made this group unique is how they embraced the heavy metallic genre of rock music. This song took the market by surprise and managed to top the billboard charts for a while.
