Alfredo James Pacino, commonly known as Al Pacino, is an Italian-American film actor, director, and producer. He is best known for his role in the Godfather sequel plus many other movies throughout his career. 

This award-winning actor has been in the industry for over 5 decades and is one of the most influential actors and a Hollywood icon. His dream was to play baseball professionally, but the universe had other plans. 

Al is friends with Robert De Niro. Not only are the two from New York, but they have also been in many movies together, with The Irishman being the latest. 

Having been in over 90 productions on TV, film, and theater over the years, Al Pacino’s roles have been diverse and it is safe to say that he has had a perfect and admirable career as a movie actor and director. Here are 10 fascinating facts about Al Pacino. 

1. Al Pacino Lost His Mum When He Was 22 Years Old 

Al was born on 25th April 1940 in Manhattan, New York City. He was the only child of Rose Gerardi and Salvatore Pacino, both of Italian descent. He spent his first two years in East Harlem Manhattan but sadly his parents divorced and he moved with his mum to her parents’ house. His maternal grandparents lived in South Bronx in NYC. 

He attended Herman Ridder Junior High School but he did not graduate. Al dropped out of school but was still attending English lessons. He auditioned and got into the High School of Performing Arts, which made his mum furious and so he ran away from home. 

Al slept on the street, in theaters, or at friends’ houses. He did odd jobs as a messenger, janitor, busboy, postal clerk, and mail room employee whenever he could, to support himself and his acting training.  

In 1962, Al’s mum died and the following year, his grandfather also passed on. He was devastated because he still looked up to them even if he was not living at home.

2. He Learnt How To Act At HB And Actors Studios

Al enrolled at HB (Herbert Berghof) Studio acting school in New York City, where Charlie Laughton was his teacher and they became best friends.  

After four years at HB, he proceeded to the Actors Studio where he learned the principles of method acting. His teacher was Lee Strasberg and they became great friends.  

As he was in acting school, he would act in plays in theaters whenever he could and was also trying standup comedy but he did not like it. He was a talented actor, getting his first film in 1969, a brief appearance in Me, Natalie. 

3. His Drug Usage Started At A Very Young Age 

Al got exposed to drugs at a very young age, he started smoking when he was only nine years, then slowly went into drinking and smoking pot by the time he was a teenager. The drug abuse led to his bad behavior and troublemaking, getting into fights constantly.  

Unfortunately, two of his closest friends died of drug abuse after overdosing. The two were 19 and 30 years old.  

The sudden fame after The Godfather was released was difficult for Al to cope with, so his drug abuse continued till 1977 when he chose to be sober. 

4. Al Pacino Wanted To Use A Different Stage Name

At the beginning of his career, Al didn’t want to use his surname as his stage name, fearing being cast in stereotypical Italian roles.  

The fact that people didn’t pronounce his name right wasn’t helping matters. People kept calling him Pakani, Pakaoni, and Pakano very few used the ‘ch’ sound in Al Pacino. 

His friends had nicked named him ‘Sonny’ when he was young and the name had stuck, so he wanted to use ‘Sonny Scott’ as his stage name. 

5. The Actor Was Arrested And Detained  

Al Pacino was arrested and put in jail when he was 20 years because police officers found a weapon in his car and they did not believe his explanation. He spent 3 days in custody till the police figured it was a stage prop just like he’d told them. 

6. He Does Not Have A Star On The Walk Of Fame  

Although Al Pacino is a famous Hollywood Icon, he does not have a star on the famous Hollywood walk of Fame. He was nominated and selected for a star but he never picked a date for the public ceremony and therefore never got it. 

He has declined several other Walk of Fames, endorsements, and even movie roles unapologetically. Al Pacino Boycotted an Oscars ceremony because he had been nominated for Best Supporting Actor and not Best Actor in 1973’s Godfather. 

He was honored with a cement imprint outside the iconic Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood which is a prestigious honor for actors in the entertainment industry.

7. Al Pacino Has A Triple Crown of Acting

The triple crown of acting is a term that describes actors who have won at least one Academy, an Emmy, and one Tony Award competitively in the acting categories. These three are the highest awards in American film, television, and theater, respectively. 

Al Pacino has two Tony Awards for his stage work, two Primetime Emmy Awards for his work on television, and an Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Actor in the film Scent of a Woman. It took him 35 years to get the crown, that is from the time he received the first one to when he got the last one. 

8. The Actor Was Injured In A Movie Set 

Al Pacino is dedicated to his craft. He has however suffered a couple of serious injuries while shooting. In Scarface, the actor was cut with a piece of glass thrown by co-star Michelle Pfeiffer during the restaurant scene. 

He also burned his hand in the same movie during the climactic gun battle when he grabbed the gun’s barrel. They stopped filming for two weeks to give him time to recover. 

9. Al Pacino Has Never Been Married But He Has Children

Al Pacino is in his 80s but he is still a bachelor. Although he has never been married, the actor became a dad when he was almost 50 years old and he has three children so far. His eldest child is Julie Marie who was born on 16th October 1989 in Queens, New York, and her mum is Jan Tarrant, an acting coach.  

The other two children are twins Anton James and Olivia Rose. They were born on 25th January 2001 and their mum is Beverly D’Angelo, the actress.  

10. He Loves The Opera And Shakespeare

Al Pacino likes the finer things in life. He loves classic English literature, especially Shakespeare, and is an opera music fan. This love may have started when he worked at Carnegie Hall as an usher when he was young.  

Al also acts in theaters having played Hughie in Shakespeare’s Richard III and Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. He directed a documentary called Looking For Richard in 1996, which is about the impact of Shakespeare’s work. 

Al is a great actor on stage, on TV, and in film. The American Film Institute awarded him with a lifetime achievement award in 2007.
