Schiffbau is symbolic of the renaissance of once-industrial western Zürich. Once a mighty factory churning out lake steamers and, until 1992, turbine-engine parts, this enormous shell has been turned (at considerable cost) into the seat of the Schauspielhaus, a huge theatre, with three stages.

It’s worth visiting just to have a look inside. The venue is also home to a stylish restaurant, an upstairs bar and jazz den Moods.The building looks amazing; the former industrial warehouse is well maintained and has been subtly enhanced with modern features.

The plays shown at Schiffbau tend to be well-known , and it is also where productions by Junges Schauspielhaus, the young ensemble, and a monthly poetry slam session are staged. You can buy tickets online and print them out yourself.

Every Monday is ‘Theatre Monday’ which means tickets are half-price for all categories – so grab yourself a bargain seat.Schiffbau offers more than drama in a stunning location: on site there’s also La Salle, a somewhat poncey restaurant with a more down-to-earth bar next door.

The Schiffbau has several sections in it as well as Moods, a jazz club putting on gigs from across the spectrum of jazz, blues, world music and hip hop. Also part of the Schiffbau building is Nietturm, a bar in a glass-fronted tower overlooking the surrounding area. 

Directly connected with it is the new building organised around a courtyard, which houses all the workshops and offices of the Schauspielhaus and, at the top, a ring of two-storey privately owned apartments arranged around an internal courtyard that can also used be used as an open-air theatre.
