The restaurant was awarded its third Michelin star in 2012. Moreover, Bottura and Osteria Francesca were featured in episode one of the first season of Netflix’s Chef’s Table series in 2015. Marchesi’s birth location was Milan, Italy. The Italian chef is remembered by many as the founder of the new Italian cuisine. He was the first chef in Italy to receive the three-star Michelin distinction.
His interest in the industry was sparked by his hotelier parents at a young age. At 17 years old, he secured a job at a hotel and began pursuing hotel studies. He later joined his parents at their facility, Albergo del Mercato. There he prepared traditional recipes and was allowed to experiment with his creations. Gualtiero moved to France where he worked in different locations across the country including Paris.
He returned to Italy and opened his first restaurant in 1998, Gualtiero Marchesi di San Pietro all’Orto in Milan. Within the first two years of operation, Mercato received Michelin star status. Yet his vision of global cuisine flourished after opening the Ristorante di Erbusco in the Albereta Hotel in Italy’s Franciacorta region.
Furthermore, in 2001, he opened a restaurant in Paris. In the same year, he took over Hostaria dell’Orso, Rome’s oldest restaurant. In 2011 he designed two hamburgers and a dessert for McDonald’s, becoming the first celebrity chef to do so. He was awarded the America Award of the Italy-USA Foundation in 2017. There are also several film documentaries in his honor.
12. Antonio Carluccio
This Italian-born chef and food expert earned recognition as “the godfather of Italian gastronomy”. He gained the reference because of his long-standing career spanning over 50 years. For most of his career, Carluccio was based in London.
Better still, the chef also rose to the limelight through television appearances. One of his most prominent shows was the collaboration with Italian chef Gennaro Contaldo, on Two Greedy Italians (2011). The show was aired on BBC Two.

Italian chef, Nadia Santini is known for her restaurant, Dal Pescatore, in Italy’s Lombardy region. Her philosophy of a small restaurant makes her stand out. She once said, “I think it is impossible for a woman to run a kitchen that serves 100 people. I can’t give my heart to a dish if I am cooking for more than 30.”
