Byron Mann is a Hong Kong-American film and television actor. He grew up in Kowloon and went to Diocesan Boys’ School. My father worked as a dentist, my mother was a homemaker. She is American-Chinese. His upbringing is ethnically diverse and so impacted by other customs. His diverse heritage allows him to speak Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Thai, and Hong Kong.

He is best recognized for his acting and martial arts abilities. Byron Mann began his acting career at an early age and has appeared in numerous films and television shows.

1. His acting career began in 1994

He did stage plays in high school but didn’t realize he wanted to act until he was in the middle of graduate school in the United States.

Mann’s acting career began in 1994. Mann has appeared in films such as Red Corner and The Corruptor as well as the television series Dark Angel, and she has also co-starred in Catwoman and Invincible. He is well recognized for his roles as Ryu in Street Fighter (together with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Juliá) and Koh in the manga-based film Crying Freeman. Mann appeared in The Man with the Iron Fists, directed by RZA and produced by Quentin Tarantino, opposite Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu in 2012.  Mann starred opposite Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling, and Steve Carell in The Big Short, a Paramount Pictures feature film directed by Adam McKay.

Mann was cast as Uncle Six on the Netflix series Wu Assassins in June 2018. The show is characterized as a crime drama set in Chinatown in San Francisco. Iko Uwais plays Kai Jin, an ambitious chef who is chosen as the newest and final Wu Assassin to gather the powers of an ancient triad and restore harmony. Uncle Six was also to be played by Byron Mann.

3. He received a degree in philosophy from UCLA in Los Angeles, California

Mann earned a philosophy degree from UCLA in Los Angeles, California.  After college, Byron entered USC Law School but left after the first year to pursue other interests. Back in Hong Kong, he landed a role in the NBC Movie TV film Last Flight Out. He returned to Los Angeles, graduated from USC Law, passed the California bar, and began working as an actor full-time.

4. He has an interest in sports

Mann enjoys sports, particularly tennis and golf. He was once the top-ranked tennis player in Hong Kong’s under-16 division. His entire family plays tennis, and his brother used to be a member of Hong Kong’s Davis Cup team; His tennis experience permitted him to practice martial arts in movies since it has made him very agile.

5. He is a Wushu practitioner

Wushu is both a hard and soft martial art, as well as a full-contact sport. It has a lengthy history in Chinese martial arts. It was created in 1949 in an attempt to standardize the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts, although attempts to systematize the different fragmented martial arts traditions stretch back even farther, to the establishment of the Central Guoshu Institute in Nanking in 1928.

However, Mann was also a wushu practitioner, he can be seen demonstrating his abilities in films such as Invincible and Street Fighter.

6. He is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin, and speaks some Thai

Mann speaks English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and some Thai, which he studied for his role in the 2013 film A Stranger in Paradise.

Mann was raised in Kowloon and attended Diocesan Boys’ School. His father was a dentist, while his mother was a housewife. He grew up speaking English to her and Cantonese to his father and everyone else because she is American-Chinese. He learned Mandarin in college after spending the summer studying in Shanghai.

7. He was nominated for a Golden Maple Award

Mann was nominated for a Golden Maple Award in 2016 for Best Actor in a TV Series Broadcast in the United States for his work in Hell on Wheels.  A committee of ACISE-LA members selected the nominees.

The Academy of Canadians in Sports and Entertainment – Los Angeles (ACISE-LA) bestows the Golden Maple Awards to Canadian actors who appear in television series broadcast in the United States on an annual basis. The ACISE-LA is a non-profit organization whose members include actors and directors, Canadian Olympians, and Canadian athletes who play for major sports franchises.

Ryu in Street Fighter, Silver Lion in The Man with the Iron Fists, Wing Chau in The Big Short, Admiral Augusto Nguyen on The Expanse, Chang on Hell on Wheels, and Yao Fei on Arrow are among his most well-known performances.

9. He did commercials and music videos to begin with and then he was cast in an NBC movie

After he noticed that the work was quite uninteresting. he took a sabbatical and spent time in Hong Kong exploring acting opportunities. He stated that he started off doing commercials and music videos before being cast in an NBC film. Later on, in 1994,  he had his first major role in the film Street Fighter. He played Ryu, a martial arts expert, yet he only he had begun studying and mastering martial arts during filming.

A lot of his projects have been action-oriented, even though he has also done a lot of drama and one or two comedies, as well as shows that weren’t meant to be funny but came off as hilarious. Working with individuals he grew up watching, such as Chow Yun-fat in [1999 action movie] The Corruptor and Eric Tsang [Chi-wai] on a Canadian television mini-series called Dragon Boys, about Asian gangs in Vancouver, has been one of his happiest moments.
