One of the most infamous unsolved homicide cases in Finnish criminal history that shocked many is the Lake Bodom murders. 15-year-olds Maila Björklund and Anja Mäki, alongside 18-year-olds Nils Gustafsson and Seppo Boisman had gone camping at Bodom Lake in Espoo, Uusimaa. On 5th June 1960, the three were murdered by stabbing and blunt-force trauma, while Nils survived with injuries as they were sleeping in their tents.

Furthermore, Nils Gustafsson suffered broken facial bones and stab wounds but survived the whole ordeal. A group of boys birdwatching at 6:00 AM on 5th June reported having seen the tent collapse and a blond man walking away from the site. At about 11:00 AM, the bodies were discovered by a carpenter known as Esko Oiva Johansson who alerted the police.

Additionally, extensive investigations began to try and find the killer but all was in vain. The perpetrator(s) were not found with various theories being spoken about over the years. Nils became the suspect and was arrested in 2004 but was not found guilty of the murders. 1. Three Finnish Teenagers who were Camping Were Murdered

It was on Saturday 4th June 1960 when four teenagers decided to camp along the shore of Lake Bodom. This was near the city of Espoo’s Oittaa Manor.

Maila Irmeli Björklund and Anja Tuulikki Mäki were both aged 15. They had been accompanied by their boyfriends who were both 18 years,  Seppo Antero Boisman and Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson.

The couples enjoyed themselves on the night of the 4th without any hitch. Sadly, on 5th June, three of the teenagers were killed.

2. Nils was the Only One who Survived Extensive Injuries

Out of the four teenagers, only one of them survived, Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson. However, he sustained severe injuries such as fractures to the jaw and facial bones as well as stab wounds.

Moreover, it was reported that he had bruises on his face. Nils gave a chilling revelation about the one who attacked them as he got a glimpse of the attacker wearing black clothes and having bright red eyes.

3. The Victims were Bludgeoned using a Blunt Object and Stabbed by a Knife

Sadly, these teenagers died a painful death that they didn’t deserve. It said that they were killed at around 4 am and 6 am while sleeping in their tents. The suspect was believed to have used a knife to stab them and a blunt object to bludgeon them.

4. The Assailant Murdered the Victims from Outside their Tents

After some investigations were concluded, the report stated that the killer did not enter the tent. However, he attacked the teenagers through the wall and roof of the tent. Unfortunately, the weapons that were used to perform this incident were never found.

5. The Killer Stole Several Personal Belongings of the Victims

After committing the heinous acts, the killer escaped with the victims’ belongings. Some of the belongings that were missing from the murder scene were the victims’ clothes and wallets.

However, the survivor’s shoes were later found a distance of 500m from the crime scene. The investigation revealed that the killer was wearing Gustafsson’s shoes.

6. Gustafsson’s Girlfriend was Found Lying on Top of the Tent

Sadly, the body of the survivor’s girlfriend was found placed on top of the tent. She was the most injured among all the victims in this scene.

On top of that, she was stabbed many times compared to others. Other than being stabbed multiple times, it is believed that she was sexually assaulted as she was undressed from the waist downwards.

7. Many Local People Suspected Karl Valdemar Gyllström

Investigators began their investigations while locals also provided some clues about the murderer. Some names were brought forward about who might have been the killer.

The locals claimed that one of the kiosk keepers was the main suspect, Valdemar Gyllström. What brought forward this suspicion is that Valdemar used to be so aggressive to campers in the area. The locals referred to Valdemar as a hostile person to the campers as he used to cut down campers’ tents and throw rocks at them.

Moreover, some of the locals claimed that they saw him walking away from the murder scene. However, the locals were afraid to call the police and say what they witnessed. Unfortunately, the suspect was disturbed by the allegations and he committed suicide in Lake Bodom in 1969.

8. Most Public Suspicion Focused on Hans Assmann

As the locals accused Valdemar Gyllström, members of the community claimed that Hans Assmann was the man behind the crime. Hans was said to have been residing some kilometers away from the shore of the lake. The man was accused of committing this cold-blood murder plus other crimes.

However, the police didn’t take the public claims seriously and did no investigation into the suspect. This was because Assmann had an alibi during that night of the brutal murder scene. He said that he had visited Germany.

Over and above that, there were claims that Assmann had visited a hospital on 6th June 1960 in Helsinki. During the visit to the hospital, his clothes were full of blood. Yet, this was never looked into making him clean of the allegations.

9. The Story Took another Turn After 44 Years

After 44 years, in March 2004, the survivor was accused of killing his friends and was arrested in late March 2004. The Finnish police claimed that new evidence about the murders was acquired. The evidence was acquired through new investigative methods that were not available in the 60s.

Thus, the new Investigations claimed that the survivor was jealous of his girlfriend and this led him to stab her 15 times. To cover up his actions, he went ahead and killed all of his friends.

To boot, modern DNA also revealed that the blood that was found on the survivor’s shoes was for the three Murdered victims. However, Investigations said that Gustafsson’s blood was absent.

Besides, the prosecutors claimed that Gustafsson committed the murders and later faked the missing items by hiding them. He later went injured himself for cover. After injuring himself he went back to the tent without his shoes and pretended to be hurt and unconscious.

10. Court Found Gustafsson Not Guilty

The court found not enough evidence to charge Gustafsson with the murders of his three friends, on October 7, 2005. Throughout the court sessions, the survivor proved his innocence by saying that he was also the victim of the unknown assailant.

Furthermore, the court claimed that the murders happened a long time ago and it was difficult to get enough evidence from the scene. The court had to pay Gustafsson 44,900 euros for the mental suffering caused by the charges.
