Owing to its complex cultural history and the wide array of people who live there, Hong Kong’s music scene is varied and multifaceted. The Music of Hong Kong is an eclectic mixture of traditional and popular genres.
Cantopop is one of the more prominent genres of music produced in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta regularly perform western classical music in the city. There is also a long tradition of Cantonese opera within Hong Kong.
Marketing research findings reveal that Cantopop (86%) is most popular music genre among Hongkongers. It follows by Mandarin (51%), English (33%), Korean (13%) and Japanese (9%) songs. Here are 10 of the most famous singers in Hong Kong.
1. Anita Mui

Hong Kong singer and actress who made major contributions to the Cantopop music scene and received numerous awards and honors. She remained an idol throughout her career, and is regarded as a Cantopop diva. In the 1980s, the gangtai style of music was revolutionized by Mui’s wild dancing and on-stage femininity.
She was famed for her outrageous costumes and high-powered performances in combination with contralto vocals, which are rare in female artists. Mui once held a sold-out concert in Hammersmith, London, England, where she was dubbed the “Madonna of the East”.
2. Jackson Wang
Jackson Wang is a singer, record producer, fashion designer, and music video director. His first solo album, Mirrors, debuted in 2019 and reached number 32 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. Wang gained widespread recognition after joining JYP Entertainment’s K-pop boy group, Got7, in 2014.

William Chan is a Hong Kong singer, dancer and actor. He was born on 21st November 1985. William began his career in 2003. He participated in New Talent Singing Awards where he won several awards.
He was then signed under Emperor Entertainment Group. He propelled his singing career by joining Cantopop group Sun Boy’s in 2006 and left the group in 2008 to pursue a solo career. He released his debut solo album in the same year. Since then, he has released a total of 7 albums and 6 singles. All of which have made huge sales in Hong Kong.
4. Sammi Cheng
Sammi Cheng is a Hong Kong singer and actress. She is Hong Kong’s Pop diva, with album sales of over million copies throughout Asia. Most notably in the 1990s, she was dubbed by the media as the “Cantopop Queen”.
Cheng holds the record of having the best sales albums and The Best Sales Local Female Vocalist awards in the Hong Kong Cantopop industry since her debut. From 1993 to 2010, Cheng won a total of 12 Top Female Vocalist awards, 14 The Best Sales Local Female Vocalist Awards and has 7 albums that are The Best Sales Cantonese Release of year.
5. Joey Yung

Joey Yung is a singer and Cantopop diva signed to Emperor Entertainment Group. Since her debut in 1996, Yung has won numerous awards, including the prestigious JSG Most Popular Female Singer and Ultimate Best Female Singer – Gold awards a record-breaking nine times.
She was ranked 63rd on the 2014 Forbes China Celebrity 100, making her the most influential Hong Kong-based female singer that year. Her work continues to be far reaching and influential.
6. Aaron Kwok
Aaron Kwok is a singer, dancer and actor. Active since the 1980s, Kwok is known as one of the “Four Heavenly Kings” of Hong Kong pop music. Dubbed the “God of Dance”, Kwok’s onstage dancing is influenced by the late American performer Michael Jackson.
He has released over 30 studio albums in Cantonese and Mandarin, with most of his songs are in the dance-pop genre, with elements of rock, R&B, soul, electronica and traditional Chinese music. He has great talent.
7. Kelly Chen

Kelly Chen is a Hong Kong Cantopop singer and actress. She has been referred to as a “Diva of Asia”. She has had close to 20 million record sales of 38 albums. She has won over 300 awards and is involved in many philanthropic activities.
She was rewarded as one of “The Outstanding Young Persons of the World” in 2004 by the Junior Chamber International and “Young Global Leaders” by World Economic Forum in 2009. Chen is a lyric mezzo-soprano.
8. Alan Tam

Alan Tam is a singer and actor. He played a major role in developing the Cantopop scene in the 1980s as he was known for singing romantic ballads with modern arrangements.
From 1983 to 1987, Alan Tam received numerous music awards and won Most Popular Male Artist and IFPI Award for successive four years, which made him the most famous superstar singer of Hong Kong in 1980s. As of 2013, Alan Tam had launched a total of 115 solo albums and has sold over 35 million records worldwide. This is an extremely huge sale. Alan Tam is a household name in the music industry in Hong Kong.
9. Gillian Chung
Gillian Chung is a singer and actress. She is a member of the Cantopop duo Twins, along with Charlene Choi. On 27th March 2010, Chung released her début solo EP, which was sold as part of the package of Twins’ fourth compilation album Everyone Bounce. The EP includes six songs, including début solo single More Hearts that was released a year prior to the album release.
10. Lucas Wong

Lucas Wong is a rapper, singer and model of Thai and Chinese descent. He is a member of the South Korean boy group NCT, its Chinese sub-unit WayV and rotational sub-unit NCT U, as well as the supergroup SuperM.
With the rising popularity of K-Pop, Lucas Wong has a made a huge name for himself being in the great K-Pop boy bands. It is a movement.
