10 Most Famous Trials in China
The people’s republic of China is a democratic country. It is located at the north pole of the earth in the Asia continent. The country’s population is the largest in the world. There are around 1.402 billion people in China.
The more the people in a country, the more differences in characters and behaviors. Some people go against the law willingly. Others do it due to ignorance while others find themselves in the middle of unlawful situations but with no idea of how they ended up there.
The lawbreakers face the law keepers from the police officers to the judges and lawyers. The country has about 670 prisons to hold the criminals for the stated time. The number of prisoners is about 1.5 million, making the country first as far as the prison population is concerned.
There are about 400 judges led by the president and Chief Justice. In addition, the administrative personnel has over 600 members. All these work in courts that are divided into four. The Supreme Court (1), Railway court (13), Maritime Court (5), and Military Court (10).
Most of the trials that are infamous in China are criminal cases. However, there are other kinds like fraud and enslaving. The following are some of the most famous trials in China.
1. Li Hao’s trial
He had sex slaves in his excavated burrow underneath the cellar of his house. The house was located in Luoyang, Henan province. He had imprisoned six women aged 16 to 24 who he raped. In addition, he forced them to perform in pornographic shows on the internet.
The situation went to a point of Li killing one of the women. He then forced the remaining three to kill on to them. His capture was as a result of information given to the authority by one of the women who managed to escape.
In court, he was convicted. Accused of rape, murder, organized prostitution, manufacturing and distributing obscene material, and detaining people against their will. For all these, the Intermediate People’s Court sentenced him to death.
2. Fake treatment papers’ trial

Liao Dan’s wife was sick. She was undergoing expensive dialysis treatment. After paying for six months, Liao found someone to fake treatment form at Beijing hospital. The person run under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.
The form would entitle Liao’s wife to obtain dialysis free of charge. They used the form for four years, avoiding a hospital bill of about 1.7 million Yuan. Long last, he ended up in the hands of law for fraud.
The public thought it was not a crime for he was doing it for his wife. Unlike them, the court in Beijing sentenced him to three years in jail. In addition, he was charged a fine of 3000 Yuan.
3. The Gansu school bus’s trial
A 9 passenger minibus from a Little Ph.D. Kindergarten collided head-on with a goods van. The school bus was traveling from Shaanxi province to Gansu province. Despite being a legal 9 passenger minibus, it had 64 people on board. These included 62 children.
19 children and two adults died on spot. 43 others were badly injured. Li Jungang, the board chairperson of the kindergarten was convicted for road safety irregularity. The fame of the case grew from social media platform comparisons.
The commentators were comparing the mini-school bus in China with a bus that had currently been gifted to Macedonia by the Chinese government. The board chairperson was found guilty and faced 7 years imprisonment as a punishment.
4. Wu Ying’s Fundraising Fraud
A court in Zhejiang found that Wu Ying had defrauded 770 million Yuan. This he did when he was acting as the legal representative of a firm in Zhejiang Province. The court found her guilty and she was sentenced to death.
The fame of the case grew from the reduction of the sentence to two years. After being sentenced to life, Ying appealed. Her appeal was rejected. Later on, the Supreme people’s Court sent the case back to the lower court. Here, her death sentence was deferred to two years.
A significant factor in Wu Ying’s reprieve was an online campaign for her to be spared the death penalty.
5. China’s most-wanted fugitive
Yang Xiuzhu was a former deputy mayor of Wenzhou. She was also China’s number one most wanted fugitive. She had embezzled nearly 20 million Yuan in the public fund. Yang Absconded in April 2003, fled to Singapore, the United States, as well as other countries.
She had been on the loose for 13 years before she was urged to return to China and surrender. The People’s Intermediate Court in Hangzhou sentenced her to 8 years in prison and charge a fine of 800,000 Yuan.
6. Taobao counterfeit trial
This was the first counterfeit case initiated by an e-commerce platform. Taobao sued Mr. Yao based on the ground that it violated a rule set out in an agreement between the Taobao users and the Taobao.
The agreement stated that there shall not be sales of fake products nor infringe the goodwill of Taobao. Mr. Yao was convicted for being found selling a fake cat food brand, Royal Canin. He was ordered to compensate Taobao 120, 000 Yuan.
7. The Gang of four trial
The so-called gang members were blamed for deaths as well as despair caused by the decade-long Cultural Revolution. The members were Chen Xitong, Cheng Liangyu, Mao Zedong’s widow, and Jiang Qing.
The trial was aired on television. Attendance of the proceedings was of more than 800 people and 300 journalists.
Jiang, one of the members, fought the charges and sobbed on several occasions. At one point he was ejected from the courtroom. During those days, many people didn’t have televisions. They gathered in houses with television sets to watch the proceedings.
8. Bogu Kailai and Zhanga Xiaojun’s trial
This was a spectacle of the Bogu Kailai together with her accomplice, Zhanga Xiaojun trial. Their murder suspicion trial occurred in Hefei Intermediate People’s Court in Anhui province.
The two were accused of planning as well as carrying out the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood in Chongqing. They were at long last found guilty.
9. Sichuan pyramid scheme
Chen Lijun set up a company called Sichuan Xinfuyuan Agricultural Development Limited. He advertised the company as a nutrition products manufacturing industry. Within a span of a few months, the company had attracted 150 million members across China.
The members had invested a total of 488 million Yuan. Unlike expected, the platform turned out to be a massive pyramid scheme. For this, he was accused and found guilty in a court of law in Sichuan. The judge sentenced Chen to 10 years in prison and imposed a fine of 5 million Yuan.
10. Zhou Kehua
He was an armed robber and a murderer. Originally, Zhou Kehua was from Chongqing. He was on the most wanted criminals’ list. To evade judgment, he was in the run from the law for a long period.
After some time, he was cornered by police officers and taken to court thereafter. In court, he was accused of committing robberies. In addition, his robberies had caused the death of at least six and at most 12 people.
